In an interview with HitQuarters, Wilkinson said he was "literally aghast" at her songwriting abilities when first he heard Macdonald play the songs "This is the Life" and "Mr Rock n Roll". Wilkinson then spent around eight or nine months recording demos with Amy at his home studio with a view to securing a record deal for his new client. Zdobył nagrodę "Radio Forth". W wieku 12 lat za pieniądze otrzymane od dziadków Amy kupiła pierwsze CD: „The Man Who” zespołu Travis. Była zachwycona. Znalazła w domu gitarę swojego taty i z pomocą internetu poznała chwyty gitarowe; do tego dołączył młodzieńczy zapał do pisania i grania piosenek. I tak się zaczęła przygoda z muzyką. Później wraz z innymi młodymi muzykami grała w sobotnie wieczory w pubach – głównie akustyczne sety. Powstawały nowe utwory, zainspirowane twórczością Babyshambles (Pete Doherty), Travis, Red Hot Chili Peppers czy REM. Kolejnym etapem była wysyłka demo z ośmioma utworami do różnych firm fonograficznych. Zainteresowała się nią firma Melodramatic Records prowadzona przez Pete Wilkinsona. Z pomocą Pete'a oraz Boba Clearmountain powstała debiutancka płyta. Artystka wystąpiła w Polsce 31 marca 2008 z koncertem na antenie Programu III Polskiego Radia, a także podczas finału 2 edycji X-Factor.

She also won Best International Album and Best International Song at the 2009 Swiss Music Awards. In 2010 Macdonald won "best album" for A Curious Thing, at the annual Tartan Clef awards on 20 November in Glasgow.
