During the Galactic Civil War, Zannen oversaw a sector in the Core Worlds. He did not see action for much of the war, as the Alliance to Restore the Republic did not reach the Core for several years. After the death of Palpatine in 4 ABY, rather than going warlord, as many other senior officers did, Major General Zannen declared loyalty to whoever controlled Imperial City. He was mostly ignored by other warlords and the New Republic for several months in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor. However, in 6 ABY, he was called up to Coruscant by Ysanne Isard, the Director of Imperial Intelligence and essentially the ruler of the Empire by that point. Zannen was promoted to general and was made the chief of ground forces under Isard, who had previously heard of him and his successes. In 7 ABY, when the New Republic attacked Coruscant, Zannen oversaw the ground defense of the capitol. However, when it became clear that the Empire was losing, he left aboard a Star Destroyer. He no longer trusted Isard after that, as she did not tell him she was going to leave Coruscant before the battle. Zannen then returned to his sector, and took command of his forces. He became a de facto warlord, ruling his sector independent of outer influence until 9 ABY, when he chose to align with Grand Admiral Thrawn. The gained the Republic's attention, as Zannen was the only Imperial with holdings in the Core by that point. He was defeated in a campaign by the Republic, which Thrawn used as a distraction. Zannen himself escaped and joined the Grand Admiral replacing General Freja Covell as the commander of Thrawn's ground forces after the former died at the hands of a mad Jedi. After the death of Thrawn, Zannen pledged allegiance to the resurgent, reborn Emperor Palpatine. He took part in retaking Coruscant, acting as General Alix Balan's deputy chief of staff for the attack forces. When the Imperial forces fell apart and start fighting each other, Zannen stayed loyal to Balan, who received orders to evacuate from Palpatine. They did so, and were present aboard the Eclipse dreadnought when it was destroyed, being killed aboard it.
