abstract
  • When his superiors tried to 'decommission' him, Horstrogg stole all the hardware he could (including the last transmat in the Bodokian quadrangle) as well as his ship - The Magpie. The ship itself was fitted with a security 'gene-print', meaning that only Horstrogg could operate it. Having abandoned his former life, Horstrogg turned to piracy and gathered his own crew - training them the military techniques he had learned. The crew quietly despised him, however, as Horstrogg would often treat them badly - regardless of whether they had made a mistake or not. This was due to him believing he had superiority because of his military record and experience. Horstrogg did show some respect towards Mr Shakka - his first mate - and even claimed that Mr Shakka was a born leader in many ways (with the exception of not knowing how to delegate). Needless to say, Horstrogg still spoke down to Mr Shakka and treated him badly - to the point of threatening him with a gun when Mr Shakka questioned his orders. He would often sit back on the Magpie and let his crew do the killing for him - only appearing on-board after the pirates had won. In regards to his personality, Horstrogg was an egotistical bully who lived to the mindset he had that only the 'soldiers-of-fortune' claimed the real goodies for their work, with examples of this including him claiming various 'spoils of war' during his time as a soldier and also claiming the booze his pirate crew had stolen for 'medicinal purposes' - when in fact it was just so he could have it all for himself. He was shown as been quick to anger and to insult others, as well as been extremely boastful about what he had achieved. However, when the odds turned against him he was shown to be a coward and would flee rather then fight. In what little else is known of Horstrogg's life, he was shown to have a dislike of the elderly and had a bad father/son relationship with his Dad. The Doctor referred to Horstrogg as a "textbook sociopath" with "paranoid tendencies fueled by delusions of adequacy".
