She says, "in China, a woman is nothing. When she is born, she must obey her father. When she is married, she must obey her husband. And when she is widowed, she must obey her son." Yu-i refuses to bind her feet and with her brother's help, her mother does not bind her feet. Feet binding was popular in China. It seemed beautiful for a woman to have bound feet. It is a very painful procedure that starts at a very young age.
