  • In religion, the term false prophet is a label given to a person who is viewed as illegitimately claiming charismatic authority within a religious group. The individual may be seen as one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy, or who uses that gift for demagogy or evil ends. The label 'prophet' can be extremely subjective: Without exception, someone who is considered a 'true' prophet by some people, is simultaneously considered a 'false' prophet by others. The term is sometimes applied outside religion, to describe someone who fervently promotes a theory that the speaker thinks is false.

The label 'prophet' can be extremely subjective: Without exception, someone who is considered a 'true' prophet by some people, is simultaneously considered a 'false' prophet by others. Prophets are particularly important figures in many of the world's major religions. In particular, this article will focus on false prophets in Judaism, Christianity and Islam and the specific interpretative and theological models each religion uses in order to distinguish a true prophet from a false one. The term is sometimes applied outside religion, to describe someone who fervently promotes a theory that the speaker thinks is false.
  • The False Prophet is what the Gargoyles thought the Avatar was -- until the end of Ultima VI proved the last part of their prophecy wrong. This prophecy of the end of the world, written in the Book of Prophecies, is as follows: In Ultima IV, the Codex was discovered by the Stranger, but the Gargoyles were still an undiscovered species. It is strange that the Gargoyles came to accuse the Avatar of the Codex's theft, when in reality the members of the Great Council were responsible. In Ultima V, the clashing forces of the magical prison in dungeon Doom and the Orb of the Moons started the collapse of the underworld. Again, no one knew of the Gargoyles. By Ultima VI, the panicked Gargoyles fought for their survival. They thought killing the Avatar as a sacrifice would prevent the last sign from happening. In the end, the prophecy was averted by the Avatar, by returning the Codex to the Void. From there, it showed both kings the truth, and in the following time, the Gargoyles were evacuated from their lands. The "sacrifice" that had to be made to avert the prophecy was actually the Codex itself, so that no one -- neither human nor gargoyle -- could possess it and claim it as his own.

In Revelation 19:20, both the Beast and the False Prophet are captured and cast alive into the Lake of Fire. In the Left Behind books, the character Leon Fortunato plays the role of the False Prophet and was first mentioned as that by Dwayne Tuttle in "Assassins".
