Intending him to be the muscle in a pilot program of the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG), self-made billionaire Wilton Knight rescues the injured detective and, through plastic surgery, gives him a new face and a new identity, "Michael Knight". The other half of the pilot program is the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), a Pontiac Trans Am car that is controlled by a computer with artificial intelligence. Michael and KITT are brought in during situations where "direct action might provide the only feasible solution".
