As a character actor, MacDonald had a forty-year career in Hollywood, with more than three hundred roles to his resume. He had small parts in My Darling Clementine, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Dark Command, and in Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life and Meet John Doe, among many other films of his era. He appeared in two dozen of John Ford's works. Additionally, MacDonald directed more than forty films during the second decade of the twentieth century (1912–17). His directorial efforts ranged from a version of Lorna Doone to something called Lonesome Luke, Social Gangster. For the Oz Film company, MacDonald directed The Patchwork Girl of Oz and The Magic Cloak of Oz. He also directed and starred in The Last Egyptian, playing the lead role of Kara. In the 1930s, MacDonald taught acting at the University of Southern California.
