Sometime between 1980 and 1988, Algie took his great-nephew Neville to Blackpool for a holiday, but pushed Neville off the pier in an attempt to force him to show some signs of magic. This was part of a series of ongoing attempts to catch him off guard and force some magic out of him. In 1988, Algie and his wife Enid were invited to the Longbottom residence for tea; somehow, Algie ended up dangling Neville by the ankles from the upstairs window, and when Enid offered him a meringue he let go. The family was shocked and horrified until they realised that Neville had bounced safely down to the road. Algie, Enid and Augusta were all extremely pleased when Neville was accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, so much so that the latter wept openly with joy. Algie bought Neville a toad, which was named Trevor, for the start of the new school year.
