  • Defragmentation (or defragging), is the process that eliminates fragmentation in file systems. It does this by moving blocks around the screen, or in some modern systems, changing colors of slimmer, more attractive blocks. It rearranges file data clusters in chronological order, and relocates them to a custom DOOM II level that you created your sophomore year in high school.
  • In the context of administering computer systems, defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in a file system. It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation.
