  • Andreas Hinkel (born 26 March 1982) is a former German footballer. He played as a right back and has 21 caps for Germany. Hinkel was known for his attacking play on the flanks and defensive solidity. Now he is the manager of VfB Suttgart's U12 and U16 teams. He started his career with Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart in 2000, before moving to La Liga club Sevilla in 2006. In January 2008, he signed for Scottish Premier League club Celtic for £1.9 million. He left Celtic and joined Bundesliga side Freiburg after his contract expired in summer 2011. He had spent the entire 2010–11 season out due to a cruciate ligament injury.

The Hoops got their man on January 4th when the Seville full-back signed a contract which tied him to Parkhead until 2011. Hinkel had moved to Spain in 2006 fror a reported £3 million after making his name with Vfb Stuttgart. Capped 17 times by Germany the defender had previously played against Celtic for Stuttgart in the 2003 UEFA Cup. Having lost his place at Seville to Brazillian ace Daniel Alves – regarded as the world’s best right back – Hinkel was expected to return home, but Celtic beat off competition from Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg to win the race for his signature. Despite picking up a couple of niggling injuries Hinkel’s first six months proved to be a success and on the whole the full back proved to be an asset not only in defence but also in attack with some superb overlapping runs. Technically assured, comfortable in possession and not afraid to burst forward, the German is a fine modern full-back – although at times he can be caught out of position. Now the player has acclimatised to the Scottish game his obvious qualities will mean he is a key man for the Bhoys for seasons to come.
