  • The Catholic Encyclopedia contains more than 10,000 articles. It gives full and authoritative information on the Catholic interests, action and doctrine. It was begun in January, 1905 and is designed to present the full body of Catholic teaching and the results of the latest research in theology, philosophy, history, apologetics, archaeology and other sciences. The work is entirely new, and not merely a translation or a compilation from other encyclopedic sources. The editors have insisted that the articles should contain the latest and most accurate information to be obtained from the standard works on each subject... Representing as they do Catholic scholarship in every part of the world, they give the work an international character. The encyclopedia was published in 1913, and thus does not include information regarding the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s and the important changes it brought about. The Catholic University of America currently maintains The New Catholic Encyclopedia. The new edition of the encyclopedia is not in the public domain and therefore is not available for free online reading.
