  • The Barrow-downs, or Tyrn Gorthad, was an area of low hills located to the east of the Shire and the Old Forest, and west of the village of Bree. They were made by men in the ancient days of the Northern Kingdom. Many of the hills were crowned with monoliths and barrows, whence comes their name. They served as resting places for the men of the north, as well as the Dunedain, until evil spirits called Barrow-wights, sent by the Witch-king of Angmar, began to inhabit them. During the Third Age, the hills lay within the bounds of Cardolan in the region of Eriador.
  • The Barrow-downs or Tyrn Gorthad are a set of downs south-east of the Old Forest, once the sacred land of Arnor in the regions of Cardolan and Arthedain before the Witch King of Angmar desecrated and burned it. This is a dark and gloomy place covered day and night by a dense fog that contains many barrows of the old kings of Arnor. It is not a nice region to live in, but a fearless treasure hunter can find many treasures (and indeed get rich) in the old ruins and barrows. The Barrow-downs are bordered by the Old Forest to the West and by Eriador on all other sides.
  • "The hobbits shuddered. Even in the Shire the rumour of the Barrow-wights of the Barrow-downs beyond the Forest had been heard. But it was not a tale that any hobbit liked to listen to, even by a comfortable fireside far away." - The Lord of the Rings™

  • "The hobbits shuddered. Even in the Shire the rumour of the Barrow-wights of the Barrow-downs beyond the Forest had been heard. But it was not a tale that any hobbit liked to listen to, even by a comfortable fireside far away." - The Lord of the Rings™ Known in the Elvish language as Tyrn Gorthad ("Hills of Tombs"), the Barrow-downs, located east of the Old Forest in the Breeland region of Eriador, is a place of mystery best avoided by unwary adventurers. By day, the area seems harmless enough – a quiet region of gently rolling plains and grassy mounds topped by ancient standing stones, marking the final resting place of great warriors from ages past. But the spells which lay across the Barrow-downs are deceiving, and the mists that roll in as the day wanes can disorient and entrap even the bravest souls, turning the once-pleasant hills into dark shapes crowned with sharp teeth of stone. In the dreadful gloom, evil spirits from Angmar dwell amongst the standing stones and within the burial mounds, inhabiting the bodies of the long-dead warriors and raising them as terrifying Wights driven to collect the living and bring them forever into this land of the dead.
