Il y visite divers avant-postes et fait de nombreuses rencontres. Mis à part quelques anecdotes liées au journaliste lui-même et un extrait du journal de bord personnel de Kathryn Janeway, New Worlds, New Civilizations est entièrement écrit de son point de vue (au présent de narration et à la première personne du singulier). Le livre est divisé en quatre sections différentes représentant les quatre éléments : feu, eau, air et terre.
