  • Donnell Guerin was a former Master Sergeant of the UNSC Marine Corps and ORION Project operative who turned to a life of crime following his discharge from the military. Originally a juvenile delinquent from the colony of Emerald Cove, he distinguished himself during his military career as a particularly cunning and creative fighter whose lack of formal education was compensated by a natural knack for the art of war. He participated in the SPARTAN-II Program as a combat instructor, pushing the child candidates to their limits while teaching them how to fight. His first and only battle of the Human-Covenant War saw him wounded in action and the combination of physical and psychological trauma was sufficient to merit an honorable discharge; however, he murdered a superior officer shortly after being discharged and fled to Insurrection-controlled space. He then began making a name for himself as a criminal jack-of-all-trades and his success earned him membership in the Crimson Rifters, a fringe-world syndicate with strong ties to powerful Insurrectionist groups. His services as a mercenary included arson, kidnapping, smuggling, theft, and even assassination, but it was smuggling which became his strong suit. He was responsible for the training of Constance Hawke, his star pupil turned rival, and he was ultimately booted from the Rifters after his conscience led him to tip off the UNSC regarding a terrorist plot. After several years of "honest" work as a fetcher, he returned to notoriety when informed of an ongoing arms race for ancient alien technology between various factions. A trained killer with a damaged moral compass, Guerin was known for his charisma and ruthlessness; however, his behavior would become erratic when he confronted issues which mirrored past personal struggles. By his reckoning, the UNSC turned him into a monster and only deemed him such when he stopped following its agenda. Despite his dedication to self-preservation and inherent self-centeredness, he was decidedly cynical in his view of himself and haunted by a combination of actions performed during Operation: TREBUCHET, SPARTAN-II, and the fall of Biko. In addition to the loss of his left leg, he suffered from degenerative conditions caused by the faulty genetic engineering of the ORION Project and spent a considerable portion of his ill-gotten gains on treatment. Though he never married or produced any offspring, he considered a select few individuals to be family and would go to great lengths to protect them when necessary.
