In 1931 he was elected member of parliament for Liverpool West Toxteth. In 1934 he was appointed Recorder of Birkenhead, and in May 1935 he resigned from both his parliamentary and county council seats on being appointed a Metropolitan Police magistrate. He retired from the post in 1962.
