abstract
  • The burkaninjas are a mysterious people inhabiting Louisaland, having, according to their own tales, sprung fully-formed from a hole (or cave; translations vary) in the black benighted soil of some unspecified islands in the northern hemisphere. They largely evaded connections with the world until approached by the eminent diplomat Helsbecter of Da Swamp. They are a friendly people, though reticent in the presence of strangers, and live in what for lack of a better word can be called clans, migrating through their land with the seasons. The burkaninjas form a ruling caste within Louisaland, though their rule is more from traditions than any fixed system. Still, the country's ruler has always been a burkaninja, formally titled the Great Divine Burkaninja according to foreign traders that have visited the court. Anthropologists have had little success studying the burkaninjas more in-depth, as the various tribes of many nationalities that have immigrated to Louisaland seem to hold them in semi-religious awe and consider it taboo to talk about them with strangers. Studies in comparative mythology seems to make the burkaninjas chthonic beings, though reports collected during wartime hint more specifically at connections with maenads. Occult poetry claims that there are burkaninja colonies on the moon, though that may be the ravings of disturbed minds influenced by the recently discovered medieval empire tentatively connected with the burkaninjas. This theory is strengthened when one notes that the delusional poets give the alleged lunar burkaninja ruler the title of Anasyrma.
