  • The Gatling gun's operation centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing/reloading sequence. Each barrel fired a single shot when it reached a certain point in the cycle, after which it ejected the spent cartridge, loaded a new round, and in the process, cooled down somewhat. This configuration allowed higher rates of fire to be achieved without the barrel overheating.

  • A Gatling gun (sometimes spelled Gattling gun) is a cyclical multi-barrelled gun design, in which the shot fired from one barrel at a certain point of the cycle facilitates the rotation of the set of barrels, repeating the process for the next barrel in the arrangement. This configuration allows higher rates of fire to be achieved without the barrel overheating compared to a Machine gun. The Gatling gun, invented by the American inventor Dr. Richard J. Gatling in 1861 and patented in 1862, was one of the earliest rapid-fire firearms and a forerunner of the machine gun. Although the first Gatling gun was capable of firing continuously, it was externally-powered - by operating a crank to rotate the barrels; therefore it was not a true automatic weapon. The Maxim gun, invented in 1884, was the first true fully automatic weapon, making use of the fired projectile's recoil force to reload the weapon. Modern-day weapons of the gatling design are all self-powered, yet are still referred to as "Gatling gun" - although the accurate term for a firearm using the cyclical multi-barrel design based on the Gatling gun is "Rotary cannon". The Gatling gun was however not the first weapon capable of firing many projectiles at a time - They were predated by the Hwacha, a Korean early gunpowder weapon in which gun and rocket cannot yet be distinguished, and Volley guns, such as the rifle-sized Ribauldequin and the cannon-sized Mitrailleuse. By extension, shotguns and grape shot can be seen as very rapid-fire firearms. The original Gatling gun was a field weapon, which used multiple rotating barrels turned by a hand crank, and firing loose (no links or belt) metal cartridge ammunition using a gravity feed system from a hopper. The Gatling gun's innovation lay neither in the rotating mechanism (featured by many revolvers of the day)[clarification needed] nor the use of multiple barrels to limit overheating (used by the mitrailleuse gun); rather, the innovation was the gravity feed reloading mechanism, which allowed unskilled operators to achieve a relatively high rate of fire of 200 rounds per minute.

When Hayden is carrying the Gatling Gun, he moves at a very slow rate. Also, he cannot sprint, roll, or snap to cover, making usage dangerous if the player does not stick behind dense cover. When pulling the trigger, the Gatling Gun's barrels must rotate for around two seconds before it actually starts spitting out bullets. However, this is an acceptable wait, because once it starts firing, it doesn't need to stop. The sheer power of the rounds can literally cut enemy limbs off, similar to a power-thrown Glaive. The Gatling Gun's accuracy isn't stellar, but its infinite ammunition and extremely high fire rate offsets this disadvantage.

The gun was designed by the American inventor Richard J. Gatling, in 1861 and patented in 1862. The Gatling gun may have been the first "Machine Gun", depending on how 'machine gun' is defined, as it was capable of firing continuous bursts of fire. Unlike designs like the Maxim gun, which operate the mechanism using a fraction of the power of the fired cartridge, the Gatling gun relies on external power, such as a hand crank, or motor. Some later Gatling-type weapons diverted gas from the barrels to spin the rotating barrels like the Gryazev Shipunov-6-23 which has an amazing ROF of 9000 to 10000 rounds per minute. The term Gatling gun is still used, to refer to rotating-barrel cannons such as M61 Vulcan 20mm cannon and its younger brother the GAU-12 Equalizer used in the AC-130 gunship.

The presence of a gatling gun, a World War II invention that has been replaced by machine guns, in the futuristic Metroid universe is curious to say the least. It is also worth noting that this is the only non-Beam weapon Samus has ever used in the Metroid series. : Non-canonical information ends here.

Gatling sold his patent's to Colt Firearms in 1870 and the company began marketing carriage mounted guns from the US Civil War onward. Towards the 20th century after the German's invented the Maxim Gun in 1884 and American gun designer John Browning invented the 1895 machine gun, the gatling gun was deemed obsolete. In Rurouni Kenshin, the Gatling gun first appears in the possession of Takeda Kanryū. Upon revealing the weapon in his mansion to Himura Kenshin, Shinomori Aoshi and Myōjin Yahiko, Kanryū boasts that the Gatling he has purchased is a new model unknown even to the Meiji Government and capable of firing two hundred rounds per minute. Kanryū first attacks Aoshi, shooting the onmitsu's legs while Kenshin and Yahiko flee, but the noise of the weapon draws all of the Oniwabanshū to the scene, where each of Aoshi's four subordinates give their lives in turn to rescue their Okashira and give Kenshin an opportunity to strike. In the manga, Kanryū's undoing is his own unfamiliarity with the weapon and combat in general; after firing two hundred shots per minute for some time, the Gatling runs out of ammunition. However, in the anime, Kanryū remembers to reload the gun periodically and his undoing comes at the hand of Beshimi, who manages to fire one of his Rasenpyō into the Gatling's ammunition feeding mechanism, jamming it at the cost of his own life. The Gatling gun reappears as a weapon onboard Shishio Makoto's ironclad battleship Rengoku. In Rurouni Kenshin - Restoration, Kanryū appears with a stylized and modified Gatling gun which detached from its transportation carriage and is apparently light enough for the corrupt merchant to carry around and use in his arms. He uses this weapon to slaughter swordsmen in the basement of his mansion for fun, but is defeated by Himura Kenshin, who demolishes the weapon with a single strike.
