  • Similarly to most other Toa of Earth, Chaeus began his life on Spherus Magna as an Onu-Matoran, where he aided in the construction of the Matoran Universe. He would later be placed within the Matoran Universe on in the Southern Island Chains, along with a small population of other Onu-Matoran. Whilst in his village, Chaeus acted as a scholar and developed an interest in archaeology as well as Matoran Mythology. However, as he had little access to information on Toa, Chaeus' studies were plagued by a lack of information and he did not have access to records attaining to Toa or the Toa Code.

abstract
Thus, the Onu-Matoran decided to open his own miniature museum in his village, where he displayed a number of artifacts, including a number of archaeological finds; such as the fossilized remains of an early Rock Lion, a broken Firestaff left over from the construction of the Matoran Universe, and a Great Kanohi Elda, which was rumored to have been worn by a local Toa of Plasma. Struggling to live in the volcanic, inhospitable climate of the Southern Matoran Universe, Chaeus developed a fondness for Merall a female Po-Matoran who often obsessed over physically perfecting her already impressive strength. Fascinated by her strange state of being, Chaeus often followed her on training exercises and considered himself something of a protector to her. However, on one occasion, Merall recklessly embarked on a quest to destroy a Nui Rama hive that had developed near to their local settlement. Eager to prove her superior strength, endurance and agility, Merall charged into the nest headstrong wielding a metal spear. Alone and overpowered, the female Po-Matoran was swiftly incapacitated by the Rahi. Merall narrowly escaped death when Chaeus followed her into the hive, leading a pack of Ussal Crabs, Fusa and Mahi to fend off the Nui Rama. The Matoran of Earth was able to drag Merall out of the hive after setting it on fire, though her Kanohi received heave damage and was completely cracked. Upon returning to her village, Merall was forced to replace her original Mask of Conjuring with a Kanohi Kaukau, which was the only Mask available to her at the time. The female Matoran then thanked Chaeus for teaching her a lesson in tactical approach towards a situation.
