  • U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart has considerably more in her campaign coffers than her Democrat challenger, Jason Altmire. According to campaign finance reports in July, 2006, the Bradford Woods Republican representing the 4th Congressional District had $849,809 on hand as of June 30, compared with Altmire's $346,980. What was unexpected was that Altmire attracted contributions from two well-known Pittsburgh Republicans: businessman and philanthropist Henry Hillman, and his wife, former GOP National Committeewoman Elsie Hillman.

  • U.S. While the $2,100 Altmire received from each of the Hillmans obviously won't close the large fundraising gap between the challenger and the incumbent, the surprising contributions have raised eyebrows in local political circles.
