This story works under the premise of Mai joining Zuko on his, er, redemption quest; it started off as a one-shot that grew into a series of unsorted drabbles, then a chronological series of drabbles for the rest of its Book One counterpart. With that finished, though, the author decided the next two books will consist of longer chapters and a less episodic format. The heroes will eventually be brought into the fold near the end of Book Two, and by Book Three the focus will shift from Mai and Zuko alone to their interactions with The Gaang and the unification of both sides as a team. Book Three will also contain marked differences in episode order and pacing.
