Tailan Noth was a former Jedi Knight. During his time at the Jedi Temple he quickly developed a rivalry with fellow Padawan Nolan Hawke. He was forced to leave the Jedi order in disgrace when it was discovered that he had secretly been reading an ancient Sith Holocron. He became angry and vengeful of Hawke, hoping one day to gain revenge. Shortly after the Jedi Purge and the rise of the Galactic Empire Noth attempted to assassinate Emperor Palpetine. Instead, he was coerced into turning against his fellow Jedi and becoming the first of the Emperor's Hands. Trained in the ways of the dark side, Tailan was charged with hunting down fugitive Jedi. Tailan Noth was seemingly killed in a duel with his rival on Dantooine.

Instead, he was coerced into turning against his fellow Jedi and becoming the first of the Emperor's Hands. Trained in the ways of the dark side, Tailan was charged with hunting down fugitive Jedi. Tailan Noth was seemingly killed in a duel with his rival on Dantooine. However, Noth survived. He escaped Dantooine, barely clinging to life eventually finding his way to the planet Mortis. There, he was contacted by the spirit of the ancient sith lord Darth Azaroht. Neyhos sensed his anger and hatred and decided to make him his emissary. Azaroht christened Tailan Darth Rhagos and commanded him to prepare the galaxy for his return. The Ancient Sith Lord revealed to his new apprentice that Nolan Hawke was his heir and was destined become Neyhos' vessel.
