Culture Club are an English pop band that were formed in 1981. The band comprised Boy George (lead vocals), Mikey Craig (bass guitar), Roy Hay (guitar and keyboards) and Jon Moss(drums and percussion). Their second album, Colour by Numbers, sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, and they had several international hits with songs such as "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", "Time (Clock of the Heart)", "Church of the Poison Mind" and "Karma Chameleon". Boy George's androgynous style of dressing caught the attention of the public and the media. John Peel was possibly one of the first DJs to play their debut single "White Boy" on national radio on his 29 April 1982 show, although perhaps their pop sound was more suited to Kid Jensen's show for whom they did a session in August (see Karl's Tape Late August 1982). In an interview in Sounds in June 1982 Boy George commented: "I think every band's got something that's good, one good track – even the bands you hear on John Peel. I don't think White Boy is going to get in the charts, but the next one definitely will if we work at it enough." Culture Club is an uber-gay British 80's pop group most known for their totally gay frontman Boy George.

I don't think White Boy is going to get in the charts, but the next one definitely will if we work at it enough." After the release of their debut album in October Peel played "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" from it and the same track was also played on the special show co-hosted with Kid Jensen on Boxing Day 1983. Peel was on Top of the Pops presenter duty when the group debuted on UK television with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" when it was still at 38 in the charts. Boy George's then outrageous look made the headlines the following day and the single shot up to no. 15 the following week before going to no.1. He also introduced a repeat performance of "Karma Chameleon" on 06 October 1983 (TOTP) when the single was at no. 1 and the follow up "Victims" on video when it was at its no. 3 peak on 22 December 1983. Back on 11 January 1979 Peel had played "I'm Cold", a single by The Edge which featured future Culture Club member Jon Moss on drums. The album Witch by C in the Record Collection featured former Culture Club backing singer Helen Terry. Culture Club is an uber-gay British 80's pop group most known for their totally gay frontman Boy George. Culture Club's music combines British New Wave and American soul with Jamaican reggae and also other styles such as calypso, salsa or country. In 1984, Culture Club won the Brit Award for Best British Group, and the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In the UK they amassed twelve Top 40 hit singles between 1982-1999, including the number ones "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon", the latter being the biggest selling single of 1983, and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. Ten of their singles reached the US Top 40, where they are associated with the Second British Invasion of British New Wave groups that became popular in the United States due to the cable music channel MTV.
