Seeing potential in him, Uxas released his pet bird, then told the boy that his pet cat had eaten it, convincing him to avenge his pet by burying the cat alive. However, when the bird returned, the cat was already dead, and the boy strangled it in rage. First appearing in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134 (December, 1970), Darkseid is a character within the Fourth World, a Jack Kirby series that was originally supposed to be self-contained and finite. However, Executive Meddling prevented the conclusion that Kirby originally intended, which would have killed most of the New Gods and ended their storylines, and Darkseid was drafted into the DCU at large along with the rest of the New Gods. Darkseid has served as the Big Bad for numerous DCU heroes and titles in the decades since his first appearance. Since Jack Kirby was never able to introduce the conclusion to the New Gods that he originally wanted, Darkseid has often drifted without clearly defined goals and roles within the DCU, and at times this results in rather drastic Badass Decay and Character Derailment when authors try to fit him into stories for which he was not originally intended. This led writer Grant Morrison to put an end of it in Final Crisis - a Crisis Crossover in which Darkseid not only regains his badassery and motives, but even manages to Take A Level In Badass and become God Of Evil, who's been killing entire Universes just by existing. Darkseid has been featured in several TV series after his comic introduction, primarily serving as an opponent to Superman while continuing his search for the Anti-Life Equation. These series include: * Superfriends * The DCAU: * Superman: The Animated Series * Justice League * Justice League Unlimited * An episode of Batman the Brave And The Bold * Smallville, which featured the first live-action adaptation of the character as the Big Bad of Season 10. * Young Justice hasn't featured the man himself, but Apokoliptian and New Genesis characters and technology have appeared in some episodes, so his presence is assured. Superman and Luthor both saw this, and Darkseid gloated one last time to Superman, declaring it wasn't over, but the Man of Steel blasted Darkseid with his heat vision. Darkseid was horrified when he realized this was destabilizing the Boom Tube and was engulfed in an explosion of strange energy. Both Superman and Luthor believed the dread lord to be dead, but the truth was far more horrible. Darkseid had been merged with Shao Kahn, a conquerer from another universe to create the abomination Dark Kahn, which sought to merge the two universes its progenitors hailed from in a bid to destroy both realities. Darkseid was restored when Dark Kahn was destroyed, but instead of returning to his throne room on Apokolips when the universes were separated, Darkseid found himself in Shao Kahn's throne room in Outworld. Confronted by the united Forces of Light and Darkness, with the thunder god Raiden questioning who Darkseid was, Darkseid declared himself god and attempted to attack them with his Omega Beams, but discovered his powers were somehow gone. Darkseid commands all the military and technological resources of Apokolips. According to writer Mark Evanier, Jack Kirby modeled Darkseid physically on actor Jack Palance, while "the style and substance of this master antagonist were based on just about every power-mad tyrant Kirby had ever met or observed, with a special emphasis on Richard Milhous Nixon". Following his small debut in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 (November 1970), the character made his next appearance in Forever People #1 (March 1971) and later became a regular character in the various "New Gods" titles. Originally limited to Kirby's Fourth World titles, such as New Gods, Forever People, and Mister Miracle, Darkseid was introduced to the DC Universe more properly when it was revealed that he was the secret benefactor for the original Secret Society of Super Villains (in 3 issues of the same name, 1976-1977). He later made appearances in the brief late 1970s revival of the New Gods as well as Justice League of America #183-185. In spite of his presence as the main villain of Jack Kirby's "New Gods" title, it would not be until writer Paul Levitz used the character in the pages of the Legion of Super-Heroes that the character of Darkseid would become a major villain in the DC Universe. "The Great Darkness Saga", which pitted the Legion of the Super-Heroes versus Darkseid (whose identity as the story's main villain was hidden until the second-to-last issue of the storyline) introduced a new generation of comic fans to the villain and securing his place as one of the most dangerous villains of the DC Universe. Despite being made by Kirby, it was Levitz who perfected him, making Darkseid a true DCU character to the core. As Jack Kirby returned to DC in the mid-1980s to finish his "New Gods" series, the fate of Darkseid ultimately caused tension between Kirby and DC over the New Gods franchise. Kirby wanted to kill Darkseid off, while DC Comics (who had begun featuring Darkseid in media tie-in material, most notably the "Super Power Collection" toy line and "Superfriends" cartoon), wanted to keep Darkseid alive and refused to allow Kirby to kill his creation off. After a major cameo appearance in "Crisis on Infinite Earths", Darkseid was given the role of main villain in the Legends crossover storyline. Other appearances in major crossovers would portray Darkseid as an amoral figure, willing to help the heroes of Earth if only to ensure his own survival in the universe (Cosmic Odyssey (1988-1989), and Our Worlds at War (2001)). Currently, the character is the central villain of the 2008 crossover event "Final Crisis" by Grant Morrison. During this Batman (Bruce Wayne) shot him with a special bullet designed specifically to kill a New God, leading to his death. Batman turned to this method as reality was beginning to rip apart as a result of Darkseid's actions. Born of the royal family of Apokolips, Uxas is the younger son of Yuga Khan and Heggra. As a young man, Uxas longed to gain the throne of Apokolips, but had opposition in his peaceful brother, Drax. Uxas plotted his whole life to supplant his brother and mother (his father having long been lost in the Source Wall). During this time, Uxas traveled to New Genesis and met a young man, peaceful and innocent in nature. Seeing potential in him, Uxas released his pet bird, then told the boy that his pet cat had eaten it, convincing him to avenge his pet by burying the cat alive. However, when the bird returned, the cat was already dead, and the boy strangled it in rage. The boy soon took the name DeSaad, and would become Uxas' most trusted adviser, and possibly the closest thing Uxas had to a friend. Finally, Uxas saw his chance when a connection to the Omega Realm was discovered. Drax was intended to connect with it and assume his godname, but Uxas interrupted the process and took the power for himself, supposedly killing Drax in the process. When he emerged, he took the name Darkseid as his godname. Heggra was quite pleased with Darkseid's ruthlessness, having long detested Drax's pacifism. As part of his plan to eliminate another rival, Darkseid convinced his uncle, General Steppenwolf, to hunt the New Gods of New Genesis for sport. Darkseid accompanied his uncle on his hunt, where he killed Avia, wife of Izaya, the ruler of New Genesis. Izaya in turn killed Steppenwolf, but Darkseid soon resurrected him, and a war between Apokolips and New Genesis began. During this time, Darkseid was betrothed to a woman named Tigra, a woman in line with Heggra's own preferences. Darkseid held no affection for Tigra, but soon met the sorceress Suli, a pacifist who believed that power should be used to help the weak. Darkseid was enchanted with Suli, and soon married her, questioning whether to continue with his murderous scheme to gain the throne. Suli in turn bore Darkseid a son, Kalibak. Heggra, however, would not let her son be "tainted" as Drax had been, and ordered DeSaad to kill Suli, poisoning her. Soon after, he was arraigned to marry Karreev in order to obtain chemical deposits and plotted to kill her afterward. However, this plan was ruined when a mysterious gray-skinned beast crash landed. It was here that Darkseid first experienced fear as he watched the beast kill his friend Mayhem. He attempts to confront the beast, but the planet has proven to be too unstable and he is forced to depart, not knowing this is not the last time they would meet. Darkseid was soon married to Tigra, who bore him a son, Orion. Darkseid soon learned of Heggra and DeSaad's conspiracy, and gave DeSaad a choice: poison Heggra or face Darkseid's wrath. Desaad complied, and Darkseid assumed the throne of Apokolips, but whatever friendship between them was gone. Soon after, he was given the task of reviewing a dog cavalry soldier named Goodness, who had murdered her superior when ordered to kill her mount Mercy. When brought before Darkseid, Goodness explained that her actions were not out of loyalty: Mercy was too loyal to Darkseid to risk losing, as she had trained the dog to be loyal to her first, but Darkseid foremost. Intrigued, Darkseid ordered Mercy to kill Goodness, who immediately attacked her mistress. After a fierce battle, Goodness finally killed Mercy. Darkseid was so impressed with Mercy's fanaticism that he made Goodness head of Armagetto's orphanages, where the children were indoctrinated to "die for Darkseid". The finest of these warriors were the Female Furies, who served as Darkseid's honor guard. At the same time, the war with New Genesis was going no where, when Darkseid encountered the Green Martians and discovered their belief that the "will" represented a "life-equation". Darkseid theorized that there must an "Anti-Life Equation" which negated the will, and sought to buy time to discover it. Darkseid and Izaya reached a truce known as the Pact: Darkseid would receive Izaya's son, while Izaya would receive Orion. As long as each prince stayed on their adopted worlds, the truce would hold. Darkseid remanded the boy to Granny Goodness' care, always knowing that he would one day escape. However, the Pact was a disaster for Darkseid: not only did Scott Free (as Goodness named him) manage to escape, but the leader of the Female Furies, Big Barda, fell in love with him and followed him. Also, Orion took to the ideals of New Genesis and became the greatest warrior of the Fourth World. A prophecy soon arose that Darkseid would die by Orion's hand. In an alternate reality, Darkseid was a tyrannical dictator who ruled an overpopulated planet with great efficiency and even greater power.
