It is indeed a very generous offering, and when interviewed about it, the manager of EMI Records said 'Well we're just so proud of what we've done that we want people to share our wonderful gift of music for free, man!! Released under the GNU General Public License, Limewire is free software. Features Written in the Java programming language, LimeWire runs on any computer with a Java Virtual Machine installed. To facilitate installation for casual users, installation packages are available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and in the RPM format for Linux. Support for Mac OS 9 and other previous versions was dropped with the release of LimeWire 4.0.10. The Windows version of the LimeWire installer includes a version of Sun Microsystems' Java installer which will download and install version 1.5 of the Java Runtime Environment if it detects the machine does not have a recent version of Java installed. LimeWire uses the SHA-1 and tiger tree hash cryptographic hash functions to ensure that downloaded data is uncompromised. As such, when LimeWire is running, any files shared will be detectable on the local network by DAAP-enabled devices (eg. Apple's iTunes). Versions Lime Wire LLC, the developer of LimeWire, distributes two versions of the program; a basic version for free, and an enhanced version sold for a fee of US$18.88 (£9.65) which as the developers claim offers faster downloads (which you can also acquire using the normal LimeWire). This is accomplished by facilitating direct connection with up to 4 hosts of an identical searched file at any one time, whereas the free version is limited to a maximum of 2 hosts. Prior to April 2004, the free version of LimeWire was distributed with a bundled program called LimeShop (a variant of TopMoxie), which was considered by computer security experts to be spyware. Among other things, LimeShop monitored online purchases in order to redirect sales commissions to Lime Wire LLC. Uninstallation of LimeWire would not remove LimeShop. With the removal of all bundled software in LimeWire 3.9.4 (released on April 20, 2004), these objections were addressed. On August 4, 2006, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued LimeWire, alleging that it was profiting from unauthorized downloads. On September 25, 2006 LimeWire countersued the RIAA for antitrust violations. On May 12, 2006, the BBC reported that "Limewire" and "Lime wire" were among search terms likely to return links to malware from an Internet search engine. Trivia A song by parody artist "Weird Al" Yankovic called "Don't Download This Song" mentions LimeWire in addition to other file sharing references. The song was made available for free download on August 21, 2006. "MC Lars" wrote a parody song with the motive to persuade people that uploading/downloading music without permission should be legal. While it is mainly used for legally downloading music and films, many users (who have got annoyed with their computer crashing on them a lot) also have the option of downloading a number of different viruses to get revenge and really teach their computer a lesson. Why just today my computer kept giving me that 'Page cannot be displayed' shit so I thought, OK how about a Trojan horse for your ass, huh?!? Won't be trying that shit again any time soon will ya?!? Today, Limewire proudly serves as the number 1 virus and completely legal music provider on the Internet. Unfortunately some users have rebelled against this free-for-all system, complaining that they are no longer able to financially support their favourite artist any more and in some cases have even been caught red-handed purchasing a copy of the original music from a record store in protest. This has resulted in a number of lawsuits which are only increasing in number by the day. Our advice? Don't do it, it ain't worth it!!
