Sulfuric acid, also spelled sulphuric acid, known by the chemical compound H2SO4, and originally known as the oil of vitroil, is a highly corrosive mineral acid with enough dissolving power to burn the flesh off people. It is recognizable as having a colorless/slightly yellow coloring with a pungent ethereal nature and is soluble with water in all concentrations. Because of it not immediately being recognizable, it is frequently dyed dark brown to alert people of its danger. It can be neutralized if caustic soda is placed over it, and can also produce carbon to transform into a rubbery substance if anything containing table sugar (C12H22O11) is exposed to it.

  • By mixing the sulfuric acid with Industrial Water, diluted sulfuric acid is obtained.
  • One way sulfuric acid is made is with the double contact process. The sulfur dioxide and air are mixed and heated to 450 C and passed over a catalyst. Sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfur trioxide. Then the sulfur trioxide is cooled and passed through two towers. In the first tower it is washed with oleum. In the second tower it is washed with 97% sulfuric acid.
  • SULFURIC ACID was the main band of TOMOZO, guitarist and head of Sequence Records.
  • Sulfuric acid (alternative spelling sulphuric acid) is a highly corrosive strong mineral acid with the molecular formula H . It is a pungent-ethereal, colorless to slightly yellow viscous liquid which is soluble in water at all concentrations. Sometimes, it is dyed dark brown during production to alert people to its hazards. The historical name of this acid is oil of vitriol.

Sulfuric acid is a diprotic acid and shows different properties depending upon its concentration. Its corrosiveness on other materials, like metals, living tissues or even stones, can be mainly ascribed to its strong acidic nature and, if concentrated, strong dehydrating and oxidizing properties. Sulfuric acid at a high concentration can cause very serious damage upon contact, since not only does it cause chemical burns via hydrolysis, but also secondary thermal burns through dehydration. It can lead to permanent blindness if splashed onto eyes and irreversible damage if swallowed. Accordingly, safety precautions should be strictly observed when handling it. Moreover, it is hygroscopic, readily absorbing water vapour from the air. Sulfuric acid has a wide range of applications including domestic acidic drain cleaner, electrolyte in lead-acid batteries and various cleaning agents. It is also a central substance in the chemical industry. Principal uses include mineral processing, fertilizer manufacturing, oil refining, wastewater processing, and chemical synthesis. It is widely produced with different methods, such as contact process, wet sulfuric acid process and some other methods.
