As part of his contract in the film, he had a major role in writing the script (although he was not credited for writing). He was a fan of the TV series starring Bill Bixby, and some of the comics versions. Lou Ferrigno stated that Norton "has a similar physique [and a] similar personality" to Bixby. He had been contracted to reprise his role as the character in the 2012 film The Avengers, but the role was instead given to Mark Ruffalo.
