Zuul the Gatekeeper (simply known as Zuul) is one of the two main minions of the powerful demonic being known as Gozer and one of the secondary antagonists of the original Ghostbusters movie, and she and her male counterpart Vinz Clortho are part of the demonic race of hellhounds known as Terror Dogs. Zuul is known as the "Gatekeeper of Gozer" and is considered by many to be a female entity due to the fact it possessed a female victim and its role as the "Gatekeeper".

- The demigod has been described as being dog-like, both in appearance and demeanor. In fact, Zuul is indeed a member of the Canidae family and is registered with the American Kennel Club. While attempting to blend into Manhattan's street scene, she adopted the persona of The Lone Ranger, wearing a black mask and white cowboy hat. Zuul was shunned by residents who thought she was just a very large raccoon, albeit a drooling, ferocious with glowy eyes normal one. She quickly reverted to her normal form and can now travel anywhere in the five boroughs without a second glance.
- Zuul the Gatekeeper of Gozer is a demigod and minion of Gozer, The Destructor, alongside Vinz Clortho the Keymaster. Zuul is assumed to be female due to being known as The Gatekeeper and for possessing a female host instead of a male host. It possessed Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters. It was worshiped by the Mesopotamians, Sumerians and Hittites in 6000 BC, along with Gozer.

- It has been conclusively proven that the Zuul are not the product of natural evolution. These savage marsupials are the result of profound and sophisticated genetic tampering; they have been shaped by bio-science which far surpasses that of any known race. Although it is nearly impossible to say what sort of creatures served as the base stock for the Rippers, or what race created them, we do know that a number of their natural attributes have been enormously enhanced. Rate of reproduction, tendency to aggression, intelligence and psionic abilities have all been artificially increased...and the latter two qualities seem to be increasing further with each generation.
