In the 23rd century, the planet was considered a prime target for colonization by the Federation, as it had a moderate climate and almost anything could grow in the rich soil. Unfortunately, the planet was also discovered to be bombarded with Berthold rays, which prevented any livestock from living on the planet for longer than seven days. In 2264, a colonization expedition led by Elias Sandoval made planet-fall. Unlike previous colonization attempts before them, they were able to survive the harmful affects of the berthold rays when they were infected by spores from the local spore plants. In addition to protecting them from the Berthold radiation, the spores gave all the colonists a sense of well-being and perfect health. But the side effect of the spores's infection was, in infected persons, loss of initiative and a placidity that bordered on the lackadaisical. It ultimately took the strong emotions of a sapient being to override and countermand that effect. In 2267, the USS Enterprise arrived in orbit to ascertain the fate of the colonists. When they discovered the effects of the spores, Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock were able to free the colonists, and evacuate them to Starbase 27. [1] According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 37, "United Federation of Planets I", "United Federation of Planets II") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), in 2378, Omicron Ceti III was a Federation member. The Omicron Ceti system was located in the Alpha Quadrant. The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 104) classified Omicron Ceti III as a class M planet. This reference work stated that of the 150 colonists who made the trip to this planet in the 2260s, approximately fifty of them were still alive when the Enterprise came to check up on them. It is not clear from the episode if this was what happened.

(TOS: "This Side of Paradise") In 2343 Dr William, and Lenora Yates were investigating the possibility of using alien spores of Omicron Ceti III to repair psychological, and mental illness in humans. But Lenora was infected with the alien spores, the effects on her were classic, and relatively easy to remove. Yet the spores also affected her fetus, they bonded with it's developing DNA, and effectively became part of Vanessa Yates. At birth, the telltale signs of infection were apparent when she was born Hermaphrodite. It is possible that a way was found to inhabit this planet in the 24th century, since the service record of Anaanda Ziff seen on screen in TNG: "Eye of the Beholder" listed Omicron Ceti III as her birthplace. However, that service record was part of an extended hallucination by Deanna Troi, and may thus not be entirely accurate.
