In late 2370, Kalita was partnered with Ro Laren, a new Maquis recruit (in actuality, a Starfleet operative). Kalita accompanied Ro on a raid on the USS Enterprise-D for medical supplies. Following the discovery of a secret Obsidian Order base, the Cardassians turned Kalita and the rest of the Defiant hijacker, excepting Riker, to Federation custody. (DS9 episode: "Defiant") After being returned to Deep Space 9, Kalita and her fellow Maquis were to be transported to Starbase 375, and from there to Earth to stand trial. However, their runabout was intercepted by a Maquis cell led by Maass and they escaped captivity. Kalita remained with Maass's cell at least through early 2373. Kalita apparently also harbored deep feelings for her comrade Thomas Riker, however she was frustrated that he had not appeared to notice or reciprocate those feelings. She felt betrayed by him after seeing him kiss Kira Nerys on the Defiant. Kalita relayed all these comments to William Riker, as well as a desire to stop fighting.
