- Although counting to 40 became a Sesame Street curriculum goal in 1986, many years would pass before the number 40 sponsored an episode (in the interim, the number 21 was the highest number to sponsor the show). The number 40 first sponsored Sesame Street in Episode 4187, the show's 40th season premiere. An eyeballed number 40 runs away from the birthday cake that it is supposed to sit atop, in Sesamstrasse's 40th anniversary rendering of Mahna Mahna from 2013.

Jesus spends 40 days fasting in the wilderness before being tempted by the Devil. Jesus spends 40 days with his desciples before finally ascending to heaven. Jonah is commanded by God to warn the city of Nineveh that they will be destroyed in 40 days because of their sins, though they are spared by God after having repented and changed their ways. Some ancient cultures would sacrifice the king each year, twice a year, or after another symbolic period of time: "After the death of the old king, the officials led the new king to his coronation with a silk ribbon around his neck to remind the candidate of his brief reign with divine power. This is similar to the Scottish Rite's 33rd degree ceremony. You see, they take these life-size skins complete with eyes, mouth and everything else a person has, and they place it over the usual human body, and they walk around pretending like they're real people. But they're not. They're puppets. With real people underneath them. Now, a lot of you might be wondering, "Why do that if you can just use real people"? (long pause) Go fuck yourself. Long... and hard. (kisses his pipe) Narrator: Can you Green Egg and Ham it? That Guy:(Rhyming) Oh, yes, I can green egg and ham it. Especially when I know just how to jam it. Narrator: Can I take your order? That Guy: Actually, green eggs and ham sounds pretty good. Narrator: Kirk or Picard? That Guy: Janeway. I love a woman who looks good in uniform and can give me orders. I never follow them, of course, but it's the thought that counts. She would be like, "You! Go into warp drive!" And I'd be like, "No! You go into the kitchen and start making babies. Then she'd take off her clothes and we'd do it all over the bridge. (thinks for a second) Wait, that wasn't an answer. That was my fan fiction. Picard, because he doesn't wear a 'piece. This is That Guy With The Glasses saying, "There's no such thing as a stupid question until you ask it." (Goes back to his book)
