He played exclusively with the Blackhawks AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

He played exclusively with the Blackhawks AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. On July 15, 2013, after he was released from the Blackhawks as a free agent, Lavin was signed to a one-year AHL contract with the Springfield Falcons. On February 7, 2014, unable to make the Falcons roster and playing with ECHL affiliate, the Evansville IceMen, Lavin was traded by Springfield to the Providence Bruins for future considerations.
