La línea argumental principal está recogida tanto en La Invasión de Draenor como en la novela Beyond the Dark Portal escrita al alimón por Aaron Rosenberg y Christie Golden. Después de destruir el Portal Oscuro, los humanos descubren que la grieta que permite pasar a los orcos hacia Azeroth aún existe. Un ejército humano se adentra a través del portal hacia territorio orco para poner fin a la amenaza de otra invasión de la Horda. Al mismo tiempo, Ner'zhul, líder del clan Shadow Moon, ha tomado el control de los orcos de Draenor y está reuniendo un ejército para abrir nuevos portales a otros mundos, lo que podría significar el fin de las naciones humanas de Azeroth. Khadgar destruye el Portal desde Draenor para salvar su mundo aunque eso suponga que el ejército de la Alianza quede atrapado en un mundo a punto de explotar. Con el lanzamiento de Image:Icono bc.gif, se descubre que los miembros de la Expedición de la Alianza no murieron y permanecen vivos en los restos flotantes de Draenor, ahora conocido como Outland, luchando para prevenir una nueva invasión de los demonios de la Legión Ardiente a Azeroth.

After destroying the mystic gate into Azeroth, the Humans discover that the rift which allows the Orcs passage into their world still exists. Human forces must now venture beyond the Dark Portal into Orcish lands to put an end to the threat of yet another invasion by the hordes. At the same time, Ner'zhul- Warchief of the Shadow Moon clan- has seized control of the Orcish hordes of Draenor, and is gathering his forces in an attempt to open portals to other worlds, while bringing the nations of Azeroth to their knees.
