The name Espo was also a slang term used by smugglers to refer to members of the organization.
  • Suojelupoliisi (also known as SUPO or, in English, Security Police) was an intelligence agency of Finland. (CTU Operations Manual)
  • The Security Police, nicknamed Espos by Coruscant residents, was a special police unit trained for special protection of important locations throughout the Core Worlds, under the New Republic. In 17 ABY, a bombing in the Senate Building revealed that the New Republic Senate Guard and the regular law enforcement were not capable of providing adequate protection. A committee of the New Republic Advisory Council decided to form a new special police unit, under command of the New Republic Security Service. The "Security Police" was created, and at first was made up of some 3,000 volunteers from other police units. Undergoing rigorous training, the Security Police prevented several terrorist attacks and stopped a hostage situation at the opera house on Coruscant, for which it gained reputation

Undergoing rigorous training, the Security Police prevented several terrorist attacks and stopped a hostage situation at the opera house on Coruscant, for which it gained reputation as a reliable force. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Security Police forces fought the invaders, but were defeated. A few survivors continued fighting a guerrilla war against the Yuuzhan Vong in the lower levels.cHowever, after the war, surviving members returned and recreated the organization, this time under the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. The group was placed under command of Galactic Alliance Security. By 34 ABY, it was considered to be a secret police force, and was known to spy on, threaten/intimidate, and/or kill senators who showed signs of wanting to leave the Alliance. Later, in 40 ABY, it was transferred under the command of the Galactic Alliance Guard, which was generally regarded as corrupt. At that time, the Police was given more military-like equipment and training.
