He played for the NHL's Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders; and is currently a radio color analyst for the San Jose Sharks. As a player, Maley was a part of the University of Wisconsin–Madison team that won the NCAA Division I hockey championship in 1983. He won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986. He was chosen by the Canadiens 33rd overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the NHL team after graduating from Wisconsin in the 1986 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Canadiens were quite deep in talent so Maley found himself with the New Jersey Devils in 1987. After that he went to the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, and New York Islanders before retiring for the first time in 1994. He came back in 1995 to play one season for the San Francisco Spiders of the International Hockey League and then retired again. In 1999 he made his second and last comeback with the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League.
