  • Korea (Korean: 한국 Hanguk or 조선 Joseon) is an East Asian territory that is divided into two separate sovereign states, North Korea and South Korea. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and it is separated from Taiwan to the south by the East China Sea. The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in 2nd century BC and Buddhism in 4th century AD had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which was first united during the Silla Dynasty (57 BC – AD 935) under the king Munmu of Silla. The united Silla dynasty fell to Goryeo Dynasty in 935 at the end of Later Three Kingdoms of Korea era. Goryeo was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which was forced to become a tributary state. After the Mongol Empire's collapse, severe political strife followed and Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon Dynasty in 1388. The first 200 years of Joseon were marked by relative peace and saw the creation of the Korean alphabet Hangul by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century and the rise in influence of Confucianism in the country. During the later part of the dynasty, however, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the "Hermit kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan. In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan and remained a colony until the end of World War II in August 1945. In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea. The aftermath of World War II and surrender of Japanese forces in the Korean peninsula left Korea partitioned along the 38th parallel, with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation. These circumstances soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments centered around their own respective ideologies, leading to Korea's division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a single-party state, now centred around Kim Il Sung's Juche ideology, with a centrally planned industrial economy. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a multi-party state with a capitalist market economy, alongside membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the Group of Twenty. • Korea (Korean: 한국 or 조선, see below) is a geographic area, civilization, and former state situated on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Korea is currently divided into North Korea and South Korea, and the term "Korea" may refer to either or both of these states. Although the borders of historical Korean dynasties fluctuated, the peninsula today is defined as coterminous with the political borders of the two Koreas combined. Thus, the peninsula borders China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast, with Japan situated to the southeast across the Korea Strait. Korea began with the legendary founding of Gojoseon in 2333 BCE by Dangun. Limited linguistic evidence suggests possible Altaic origins of these people, whose northern Mongolian Steppe culture absorbed immigrants and invaders from northern Manchuria, Mongolia and China. The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BCE, and Buddhism in the 4th century CE, had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Koreans later passed on these, as well as their own advances, to Japan. After the unification of the Three Kingdoms by Silla in 676, Korea was ruled by a single government and maintained political and cultural independence until the nineteenth century, despite the Mongol invasions of the Goryeo Dynasty in the 13th century and Japanese invasions of the Joseon Dynasty in the 16th century. In 1377, Korea produced the Jikji, the world's oldest movable metal print document. In the 15th century, the turtle ships, possibly the world's first ironclad warships, were deployed, and during the reign of King Sejong the Great, the Korean alphabet hangul was created. During the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the "Hermit Kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of colonial designs by the imperial aggressors of Japan and Europe. In 1910, Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan and remained occupied until the end of World War II in 1945. In 1945, Soviet Union and United States troops occupied the northern and southern halves of the country, respectively. The two Cold War enemies helped establish governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea.

For stories set in OTL, or in alternate histories with a POD after 1945, see North Korea and South Korea Korea, or 한국, is a territory located on a peninsula in East Asia. From 1897 until 1910, the peninsula was under the rule of the Korean Empire, which had replaced the centuries-old Joseon Kingdom. The Korean Empire aligned with Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, which ended with Japanese victory in 1905. This badly damaged relations between Korea and Japan, and in 1910 Korea was invaded and conquered by its stronger allied neighbor, bringing an end to the Korean Empire and well over half a millennium of sovereignty by Joseon monarchs. Korean resistance fighters fled the country in the face of the brutal oppression of the population, and during World War II they aligned themselves with the Allied Forces. In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea in the aftermath of World War II, leaving Korea partitioned along the 38th parallel, with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under U.S. occupation. In 1948, as a consequence of the breakdown of relations between the USSR and the USA, two separate Korean governments were founded: the Republic of Korea, or South Korea, on the southern half of the peninsula, based nominally on the democratic republican model of the USA, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea, on the northern half, based on the Stalinist system of the USSR. From 1950 to 1953, the two Koreas, each with powerful international supporters, fought an inconclusive but costly war, which ended in a ceasefire and a slight adjustment of the border with a 2-km demilitarized zone providing a buffer on either side. The military situation on the peninsula has been tense ever since. In the immediate aftermath of the war both countries endured severe poverty as well as political repression. Into the early 1960s, the North's socialist economy grew at a faster rate than its Southern counterpart, which was hampered by a vicious cycle of military dictatorship and political instability. The North's economic growth stagnated from the 1960s to the mid-1980s, and was sent into a severe tailspin by widespread crop failures in 1986. The Southern economy, meanwhile, gradually improved thanks in large part to integration into the global trade network existing among the US and its Cold War allies. As of 2014, nearly 97% of the peninsula's GDP is generated in South Korea. Democracy in South Korea has grown steadily stronger since the Sixth Republic was established in 1987. Meanwhile, in the North the Korean Workers' Party and in particular its hereditary dictators, the Kims, have held to power by increasingly draconian methods, particularly since the early- to mid-1990s when many other communist governments fell to internal pressure for political reforms. In 2014 a report by Amnesty International concluded that human rights violations in North Korea are so severe and so widespread that a new category had to be created to categorize its dismal record. South Korea has cultivated strong diplomatic relations with many countries around the world, and has come to be widely seen as a responsible diplomatic partner, as evidenced by the 2007 election of South Korean foreign minister Ban Ki-Moon as Secretary-General of the United Nations. However, the United States remains the Republic's most important trading partner and military ally. Meanwhile, North Korea has grown diplomatically isolated since the break-up of the Communist Bloc in the early 1990s. The People's Republic of China has stepped into the void left by the dissolution of the USSR and become North Korea's main supporter in the international arena. However, the PRC also opened diplomatic relations with South Korea in 1992, and has maintained cordial if not always warm relations with Seoul ever since.
