Many fangirls and fanboys consider Japan to be the most awesome place in the world simply because it is where a lot of their favorite fandoms come from. They often blatantly ignore the full culture of the country, reducing it to a kind of "animeland" based only on what they as fangirls have squeed over. In reality, it has its problems and pitfalls, the same as any other country. Many fangirls and fanboys in fact do not know the first thing about the country—if you asked many of these fangirls, they would not be able to tell you the current prime minister of the country they idolize so much.

  • Japan is a nation in Asia. By 2015, Japanese culture was extremely influential in the United States of America. The time circuit control microchip was manufactured there, although it is likely that it was heavily modified by Emmett Brown. The 1955 version of Doc could not believe that the part originated from Japan, especially considering America had just defeated them in a war ten years prior. He considered the part a piece of junk, and then became surprised when Marty McFly told him that in 1985, Japan made all the best stuff around.
  • A little-known but vital fact is that Japan is not in China. By all rights, it should be—China is so big, and Japan is not—but it isn't. Also, if Japan was added to China, that would just make China even more crowded. It'd be like...a collision of crowded countries. It's important to address here that the Japanese and the Chinese pretty much hate each other, all because of the Koreans. Without the Koreans as the third wheel, Japan and China would be best buddies. In fact, all wars between Japan and China were started over Korea. Damn Korea and its spicy kimchi.

One option is to see if there is a similar page in wikipedia from which suitable and relevant content can be copied. Remember Sustainable Community Action wiki has a different purpose to Wikipedia, for example it is not seeking to be as encyclopedic. Please remember to include the {{EnWP|(page name)}} template to the article if you copy content from wikipedia.

  • Japan is a nation in Asia.
  • Japan is a country off the coast of China. If you have a cell phone, it was made there. If you have a car (and are not a conservative hatemonger), it was made there. And by there, we mean China. Essentially the Japanese hijack successful people's ideas and make them better. However, environmentalists point out that they're slaughtering whales. The Japanese justify this by reminding the world that whales, and dolphins, were responsible for Hiroshima. Japanese people also created Transformers, PlayStation, Super Mario, Ninjas and other things. They created anime and manga which we imagine is the only reason this Earth is still here. Some people think they are the Coolest people on earth. Gay marriage is legal in Japan. japanese have highest living expectancy in the world, mainly because they don't eat unhealthy western food, but sushi, soya products and other Fat free foods. Notice that except for sumo wrestlers, there are no Fat people in Japan. The most important religions in Japan are Shintoism and Buddhism, many Japanese people believe both but other Japanese are atheists.
  • Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest islands are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan has the world's tenth-largest population, with over 127 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.
  • Japan is an island nation to the east. Little is known about it, though major exports appear to be cheap junk. These exports are marked with the sentence "Made-in-Japan".
  • Japan is a country in the continent in east Asia. The capital city is Tokyo.
  • Japan is an island country in East Asia. It has the second-largest population (after the People's Republic of China) in East Asia and the second-largest economy (after the United States of America) in the world. Nicole Kirby's father was stationed in the military base at Okinawa, Japan. She thus lived in Japan as a child and learned to speak Japanese. ("The Gift") Keiko Arahida lived in Tokyo, Japan. ("Believe")
  • Japan i/dʒəˈpæn/ (Japanese: 日本 Nippon or Nihon; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, literally "[the] State of Japan") is an island nation in East Asia. • Baseball has been a popular sport in Japan for over a century since its introduction in 1872. It is called 野球 (やきゅう; yakyū) in Japanese, combining the characters for field and ball. It is played at all age levels but most widely in junior high schools and senior high schools. Two tournaments are held in March and August for senior high school teams that win a prefectural tournament. The location of the tournaments is Koshien Stadium. The highest level of competition is the professional league, started in 1920. It is called Puro Yakyū (プロ野球), meaning Professional Baseball. Players from the Japanese leagues who have gone on to success in Major League Baseball in the United States include Hideo Nomo, Kazuhiro Sasaki, Ichiro Suzuki, Akinori Otsuka, Tadahito Iguchi, So Taguchi, Kenji Johjima and Hideki Matsui. There have been some unsuccessful transfers, including that of Kaz Matsui and Hideki Irabu. When the Boston Red Sox signed Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2006, he became the most expensive trans-Pacific transfer ever. While details remain undisclosed, several sources cite "D-Mat" as having received a guaranteed $52 million for a six-year contract (with elevator clauses potentially bringing the value up to $60 million), in addition to the $51.1 million that the Red Sox had previously paid his former team, Seibu Lions for the right to negotiate.

  • As the European middle ages were ending Japan's Sengoku Period was beginning. After centuries of fighting the allied warlords Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu Tokugawa emerged the winners. Their differing approaches were summed up as "If the bird does not sing, kill it" (Oda), "If the bird does not sing, coax it" (Toyotomi), "If the bird does not sing then wait" (Tokugawa). With the Emperor a mere figurehead since the beginning of the Sengoku Period, when Nobunaga was burnt alive by one of his retainers (Mitsuhide Akechi) Toyotomi succeeded him. While Oda had feigned interest in Christianity to get firearms from the Dutch (having far more guns than other armies is one of the major reasons why Oda rose to power) Toyotomi nailed his colours firmly to the mast with the crucifixion of 26 Christians in the southern port city of Nagasaki on the 5th of February 1597 (being where the Portuguese first arrived southern Japan and in particular Nagasaki is more Christian than the north). He did however attempt to carry out Oda's wish to conquer China but after initial success in Korea the invasion failed. After Toyotomi died his son's army, Tokugawa's and that of the Emperor (who like Hideyori Toyotomi also a young man who had recently arisen to this post after the death of his father) met at Sekigahara. The Emperor was unsure whose side to take until cannon fire by the Tokugawa army convinced him to support them which led to their victory and centuries of peace, but not for foreigners who were banned from Japan on pain of death and Christians whose religions (mainly Catholicism) were kept barely alive by disguising Christian figures as Buddhist ones. Japan settled into a period of isolationism the upside being peace and the downside being not knowing what was going on in other parts of the world Japan was unaware that it was lagging behind technologically. One of the more lasting legacies of this period is that Edo (now Tokyo) remains the capital of Japan having replaced Kyoto.

  • Japan is a prominent Asian country located to the East of Korea in the Pacific Ocean. The country is famed globally for, among other things, their historic warriors; the Samurai and Ninja, their volcanic hot springs, and for being the birthplace of the anime and manga pop-culture movement. Japan's involvement in the world of superheroes and super-villains usually involves eastern mysticism, demonology or advanced science. Giant monsters, known as kaiju, traditional warriors known as samurai and elite assassins known as ninja are uniquely associated with the country and its culture. In modern day, Japan's superhero youth spend a lot of their time lounging in the metahuman clubs of Tokyo; to the elder heroes, this is an example of the younger generation's trivialization of their calling.
  • Japan was an island nation in east Asia before the Great War of 2077. Originally occupied by the United States after World War II, sovereignty was restored to the country with the Treaty of Okinawa, signed in 1966. With the Japan located just under 800 miles from China, the two Asian superpowers often found themselves butting heads throughout the 21st century (Much of the aggression was the result of Japan's actions during the Second World War). After a humiliating defeat in the Third Sino-Japanese War, the Japanese military and economy were subsequently dismantled by China, while the southern regions of the country were occupied by the PLA. In response to large bouts of civil unrest in the late-2070s, the Chinese forces stationed there evacuated after the American military defeated the PLA in Alaska. Subsequently, Japan fell victim to Chinese and American warheads during the Great War.

Historically, Japan adopted many Chinese and Korean customs and institutions beginning in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the 8th century, an indigenous culture emerged during the Heian period, characterized by aesthetic refinement and aristocratic sophistication. The arts and literature flourished, culminating in Lady Murasaki's writing of The Tale of Genji, the world's first known novel. From the 12th century to the mid-1800s, Japan was a feudal country led by clans of warriors known as the samurai.
  • Veganism does not have a large awareness in Japan today and most health-focused restaurants are closer to pescatarian, pesco-vegan, or macrobiotic than true vegan. • Under the rule of Emperor Showa (known during his reign, 1926–1945, as Hirohito), Japan began militarization and in 1937, invaded China, creating tensions that would eventually lead into World War II. After already becoming involved in the Asian theater of combat, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked US ships at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, initiating the Pacific theater of World War II. During the course of the war, the US proved superior to the Japanese forces, but not enough so to prevent heavy casualties on both sides. This lead to the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japanese cities instead of risking a potentially drawn-out invasion and occupation of mainland Japan, which could have potentially caused innumerable deaths on both sides. After bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered and was subsequently occupied.

  • Japan is an island nation in East Asia and is located on the Pacific Ocean. Its capital is Tokyo, while other cities include Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan's national language is Japanese and the type of government during World War II was Imperial. The climate of the island nation of Japan is temperate and the entire country is composed of a little over 6,000 small and large islands. The main island, Honshu, is fairly mountainous, but has no jungles or rain forest type environments. Nothing is closely similar to any other islands in the Pacific. The official currency of Japan was the yen and the military had its own yen given to service members. During WWII, Japan managed to establish a far reaching empire across much of Asia and the Pacific. Called the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere", the Empire lasted until September 1945, when Japan was forced to surrender to the Allies.

  • Japan (Japanese: 日本 Nihon or Nippon), also known as the "land of the rising sun," is an island nation located within Asia, off the coast of China. It is a monarchy and the sole remaining country to retain the head of state title of "emperor." Mercenary and survival master Kazuhira Miller was born in Yokosuka of the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, and was a former member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. The lab assistant of Para-Medic, a.k.a. Dr. Clark, was Japanese, and served as egg donor for the Les Enfants Terribles project. Dr. Clark and Colonel Volgin were Japanophiles, and Hal Emmerich was a fan of the country's animes. The Japanese also had a strict honor system, including killing to save other lives as well as suicide and execution. One manner of suicide was known as seppuku, which was suicide via disembowelment. Another is Kaikashu, which is where one executes a dishonored soldier via decapitation. Whale was also a popular food in Japan since at least the post-World War II era, largely because it was cheap and the country could not afford more expensive foods, though by the 1980s they gave up on whale as a meal due to the International Whaling Commission banning the hunt on whales. The primary language was Japanese, which included various dialects that depended on the region/district the person was native to, including Nagoya, Niigata, Hiroshima, and Kansai (the last of which was prevalent in regions such as Osaka and Kyoto). Japan's first encounter of the outside world barring Asia was when some Dutch traders supplied weapons and items in exchange for learning their culture in trade. One of these items was the Tanegashima musket rifle, although it was also given to another region of Japan by mistake due to navigational errors, originally intending to be shipped to Okinawa. During the 1930s, Japan attempted to invade China, and later got involved in World War II after bombing Pearl Harbor, siding with the Axis powers of Nazi Germany and Italy. By the time the Allied forces got to Japan in the Pacific theater, they started firebombing Tokyo, leaving several buildings either destroyed or heavily damaged. Shortly thereafter, Nagasaki and Hiroshima were hit with nuclear bombs Littleboy and Fatman, respectively. Japan was then occupied by the allied forces, with some Japanese women also sometimes surviving by servicing the troops via prostitution. After the war, Okinawa served as a major U.S. port with cooperation with the Japanese government, although there are some protests by the Okinawans, often leading to some revisions. In addition, Japan created the three nuclear principles, and was under the nuclear umbrella during the Cold War, being of strategic importance to America and the West due to its close proximity to the Soviet Union. As a result of the war, Japan instituted Article 9 to its constitution, which mentioned that Japan can not maintain an army. However, the Japanese did create an armed forces group called the Japan Self Defense Forces (JSDF), which was created for matters of self-defense, although this move was considered controversial. In addition, as part of reforms during the post-war period, the Japanese Emperor also renounced his divine status. On November 25, 1970, the Japanese author Yukio Mishima travelled over to the Ichigaya Camp, the headquarters for the Eastern Command of the JSDF, and conducted a coup d'état with four members of the private militia Tatenokai in an attempt to restore the divinity of the Emperor, only for him to commit seppuku as a result of the failure of the coup d'état. In addition, Che Guevara also visited Japan as part of an economic delegation after the Cuban Revolution was won, and briefly visited Hiroshima, and was devastated at what happened at the location. Japan underwent a student movement, known as the Anpo Opposition Movement, which occurred in 1960 and 1968-1970, where they opposed Anpo and often barricaded themselves in universities, getting the police involved. The Anpo movement eventually crashed and burned by the time of the Peace Walker Incident in 1974.

  • Japan is a country in the Real World. It is an island chain in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Asia, and has a rich and interesting contemporary and folk culture. This results in many short-skirted, crazy-haired Fangirl Japanese-speaking Sues who fail to use honorifics properly. Thus, it is an important place for the PPC to keep an eye on. Other than simply Sues, there are many badficcers who believe anything is cooler with a Japanese name and so will name everything and everybody in Japanese, regardless of whether it would be appropriate or not. Ninjas are also popular, as is Japanese weaponry—expect them to show up in badfic spanning continua from Pirates of the Caribbean to The Lord of the Rings to Tron.

  • Wrestling had always been a major part of Japanese culture, with professionally-run promotions existing as far back as the 1850s. However, the first officially recognized period of recorded wrestling history is considered to be the "Giant Era", dating from the 1900s until 1933. This was a time when Giant Pro Wrestling was a massive success, with their wrestlers being national heroes. The promotion collapsed in 1933 though, under shady circumstances. This led to the so-called "Dark Era", which lasted from GPW's demise until 1960. The public's respect for wrestling had been shattered by the way that GPW had gone out of business, and the complete lack of interest meant that no smaller promotion could even begin to think about trying to do business. There are no recorded wrestling events at all from this time period. The 1960's saw the "Rebirth Era". Golden Canvas Grappling was formed in 1960, and began rebuilding the image of wrestling as a noble sport. Burning Hammer Of The Wrestling Gods followed in 1966, and also presented wrestling as serious and competitive. The public, with the memory of GPW's disgrace having faded, started to come back, and by the end of the decade, wrestling was once again enjoying public admiration. This admiration was turned into massive popularity in the "Elemental Era" of the 1970s. GCG and BHOTWG ruled Japan, with both enjoying runs as the number one promotion, only for the other to come back. GCG had more big stars, with heavyweight wrestlers like Sadaharu Jimbo, Hanshiro Furusawa, and Yoshinaka Toshusai being very popular with fans, but BHOTWG had the biggest of them all, Master Kitozon, who had gone beyond simply being a wrestler and was now a genuine cultural icon in Japan. However, it was the emergence of Elemental, a masked lightweight wrestler, that gave BHOTWG the edge, as he became the first wrestler to make the leap from wrestling star to mainstream media superstar, and he was able to bring a whole new young audience to the product. The "Burning Era" took place in the 80s, as BHOTWG (despite the death of their figurehead Master Kitozon) went from strength to strength, while GCG fell from grace, something that many blame on former star Hanshiro Furusawa, who took over the promotion. Some of his business decisions were questionable, and allowed BHOTWG to dominate them; many believe that if it was not for the emergence of Yoshifusa Maeda as a genuine superstar for GCG, the promotion would not have even have survived the decade. BHOTWG on the other hand were enjoying massive popularity, with homegrown talents like Hooded Kudo and Optimus becoming huge stars, while foreign imports like Dread and Sam Keith made big impacts on the Japanese fans. 1996 was a year that saw a bizarre mirror effect between the two big wrestling countries, Japan and USA. From the 1980s onwards, both had been virtually dominated by one promotion. 1996 saw HGC debut in the US to provide some much needed competition, and the same thing also happened in Japan, as the "Pride Era" began; under the leadership of former GCG legend Sadaharu Jimbo, Pride Glory Honour Wrestling was formed, and BHOTWG found themselves with serious competition for the first time since GCG at the tail end of the 1970s. Boasting a pure style, PGHW had new stars like Koryusai Kitoaji, Hito Ichihara, Eisaku Hoshino and Eisaku Kunomasu, and were soon being seen as a genuine contender. The latest twist in the story happened in 2006. A controversial change in style by BHOTWG triggered a "rebellion", which saw some of their biggest names, led by their figurehead Tadiyuki Kikkawa, walk out to form their own company, INSPIRE. This left BHOTWG with a huge hole in their roster, and the balance of power in the industry shifted. As 2007 begins, many would now say that PGHW, with their incredible roster boasting some of the finest pure wrestlers in the world, like Mito Miwa, Nobuatsu Tatsuko, Yoshimi Mushashibo and Shuji Inukai, are now the number one promotion in Japan. Others would say that BHOTWG are clinging to the top spot, but are on the verge of being ousted. Either way, 2007 looks set to be an exciting time for Japanese wrestling fans.

  • The history of Japan includes samurai, ninja, Mt. Fuji, anime, porn, bonsai trees, and geisha. Through paintings, written records, and other archaeological artifacts, historians have been able to piece together what Japanese life may have been like. Amazingly, it consisted of dinosaur rearing, tentacle agriculture and ancient astronauts. Confusionism from China was introduced to Japan via Korea late in the 3rd century AD. Bukkake first appeared on the Japanese mainland in the latter part of the 5th century AD. Despite the fact that many Japanese history books extol the virtues of collective jizzlobbing by native inhabitants of Nihon, ancient pottery found in modern day Disneyland suggest that Japanese businessmen and their daughters first learned Bukkake from California hippies during their summer excursions abroad. To this day, young Japanese girls spreading their forays in this delicate art, which they call "HappyHappyCameraFun!!!" to the four corners of the internet. The Japanese liked to ramble on with war and take everything from other countries nearby them, such as culture and potties. But do not worry, because the Japanese give back to these countries by raping them even more. The Japanese claim that they are 1,000,000,000 BCE ye ol' people (and possibly more). The Japanese also like to bitch about how their neighboring countries such as Korea and China stole many, many of their cultures back in ancient times and World War II. They were generated by some ye ol' gods who formed the weird, sea-horse shaped island with magic salt from some dried up prune. The ye ol' gods, called kami, liked sea-horses and liked to devour them, so they created an island with few people now known as the Japanese. Every now and then, Japan sinks into the sea, which means that the kami guys are slowly devouring their precious sea-horse island. The Japanese take pride in their history, and deny any sort of nonsense talk about the ye ol' ancient Koreans and Chinese immigrating to their land and shaping their country up to tip-top shape with developed technology and arts in the harsh ancient times. Japan is famous for complex social etiquette that doesn't make much sense but somehow people like it and follow it anyhow, originating from when Emperor Sudoku introduced the Chinese nine-rank system and forbade courtiers from standing in the same row, column, or box as any other courtiers of the same rank. This made nocturnal sexual liaisons difficult (unless one had a Genji Glove) as everyone had to move in a concerted fashion, much as in a sliding number puzzle. Mikado of Gilbert and Sullivan employed ridiculous rhymes against which Japanese poets were defenseless. The Emperor always won. If you went against everything that the Emperor told you to do, you were going to be attacked by swordy ninjas and anime porno characters every night. The Japanese mothers, afraid that their children would be raped by the Emperor's raping minions, told them that the Japanese Emperor was always the greatest and that he was god. The children, believing this, took their mothers' advices in the most honorable way by always obeying the Emperor to the extreme and eating up all the crappy Japanese propagandas. The children also hated other races because their Emperor told them too. Japan has been, until recently, a largely agricultural economy; staple crops include rice, wheat, barley and miso. Most of these can be bought from vending machines which is pretty pricey. You can find these delicious diet staples at the Harajuku district, where Gwen Stefani lives with her magical harajuku girls who are -in her rotting eyes and brain- invisible. Portuguese Christian missionaries came to Japan in the 17th century. The Japanese were offended by Portuguese, which they regarded as a poor substitute for Spanish, and sent Hello Kitty to ejaculate the Portuguese from Japan in the most sexually offending way. Japan began a period of isolationism until US Navy commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived aboard the famous Black Ships. Japan: "No Perry, I don't think I'm ready. There's no rush is there? I mean we both love each other; isn't that enough for the moment?". Perry was drunk and the only thing on his mind was opening up those beautiful long slender Japanese trade routes. He replied, "Oh, that's okay. I just thought, if you really loved me, you would do this for me." Japan blushed and looked away, leaving the truth unspoken between them. Perry left, intent on returning next year to "just stick it in" and not deal with "all this emotional bullshit and crap". He liked that. Oh yeah, he did. Perry returned on February 15, 1854, badly drunk, and he shoved a long hard black ship into Japan and they had a good time thrusting before he came on her face in the 1854 Convention of Kanagawa. Japan, like other nations, has entered into a number of conflicts in the past, most recently World War II. In the 1930's, Japan attempted to turn Southeast Asia into an amusement park that would imitate Hell featuring natives in the role of the damned. The empire of Japan entered into a flurry of mad conquests with their national favorite Hello Kitty and anime porno characters, Their main form of attack consisting of wearing huge goggles and pulling orgasmic faces whilst flying tampon-shaped (or dildos, whichever they liked to pick) planes over large stretches of land and sea doing Kamikaze (a type of sexual harassment ritual in Japan) in an effort to piss off absolutely everyone into submission. The Imperial Japanese Army defeated colonial military forces in Southeast Asia with heavy casualties on both sides. IJA conscripts were all gays to save the trouble of "comfort women". Japanese soldiers found themselves irresistibly attracted to native men and many of these Japanese soldiers' wives had to cuff them to a tree branch in order to make them resist (and this is where the cuff/sex thing came from). Indescribable things took place. When news reached the USA, the puritans decided to put an end to this. Japanese forces in the Pacific were wiped out by an all-star cast including Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett. In 1945, the USA bombed Hirosammich and Niggasaki using atom bombs that killed so many Japanese. The Japanese people still talk about this to this day, but all they are really wanting are sympathy from Amerika and other-less-important-but-still- important Euro-nations. The Japanese ignore what they've done to many of their Prisoners of War, captured Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, Fillipinos, etc., etc. The Japanese then became peace-loving businessmen making affordable automobiles, consumer electronics, pocky, colored TV, pollution, Hello Kitty anal love beads, and anime porn. China and Korea continued to demand a formal apology - during WWII, six-legged vaginas with tentacles were created by Japan and given as 'gifts' overseas. Tragically, they went "berserk" and raped at least 20,000,000 people to death. WWII is given a somber and objective treatment in Japanese history textbooks. You don't want to read it while you sit on one of those magical Japanese toilets that cleans and flushes itself while butt raping you. The textbook itself will rape you as well. For an example of this, see World War II.

The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto capital of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area, with over 30 million residents. Archaeological research indicates that Japan was inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan is in Chinese history texts from the 1st century AD. Influence from other regions, mainly Imperial China, followed by periods of isolation, later from Western European influence, has characterized Japan's history. From the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns in the name of the Emperor. Japan entered into a long period of isolation in the early 17th century, which was only ended in 1853 when a United States fleet pressured Japan to open to the West. Nearly two decades of internal conflict and insurrection followed before the Meiji Emperor was restored as head of state in 1868 and the Empire of Japan was proclaimed, with the Emperor as a divine symbol of the nation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, victories in the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War and World War I allowed Japan to expand its empire during a period of increasing militarism. The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded into part of World War II in 1941, which came to an end in 1945 following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since adopting its revised constitution in 1947, Japan has maintained a unitary constitutional monarchywith an emperor and an elected legislature called the National Diet. Japan is a member of the UN, the G7, the G8, and the G20. A major economic and political power,Japan is adeveloped country and has the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and the world's fourth-largest economyby purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fifth-largest exporter and fifth-largest importer. Although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern military with the world's eighth largest military budget, used for self-defense and peacekeeping roles. Japan ranks high in metrics of prosperity such as the Human Development Index, with the Japanese population enjoying the highest life expectancyof any country in the world and the third lowest infant mortality rate.
  • The physically small nation of Japan represents a cultural giant throughout the world. Indeed, modern Japan is a powerhouse of technological achievement, spreading new innovations across the globe, constantly influencing the country’s image abroad. With historical art traditions fusing with contemporary forms such as Manga and Anime, such nations as the US and much of Europe are continuously assimilating Japanese cultural exports in to their own societies. For Japan, the challenge lies in maintaining this prominent position while facing the reemergence of Asia’s other historical power. In 2006, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso proposed setting up a "Nobel Prize" for foreign "manga" cartoon artists and awarding talented Japanese the title of "Anime Ambassador". Aso, said Japan’s anime and manga could be the way to China’s heart. "What you have been doing ... has grabbed the hearts of young people in many countries, including China," he told an audience of some 100 students at the University of Digital Content in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. "It’s something we, the Foreign Ministry, can never do," he added, noting the popularity of Japanese anime cartoons in China...Pop culture has the power to influence the public, so we want to and need to have it on our side,"
  • Japan, formerly the Empire of Japan, is an island country in east Asia. One of the leading countries in the field of technology, the country has a unique blend of highly competitive business circles but very traditional social circles and a history of militarist imperialism during the 20th century. The famous samurai warriors served the warlords of Japan for centuries until modern weaponry rendered them obsolete. The ninja, the samurai's nocturnal enemy, also hailed from Japan. During the 1930s and 1940s, the Japanese Empire sought to expand its empire and acquire resources to fuel it. Japan invaded China and other Asian territories. During the occupation of China, the Imperial Japanese Army bombed, slaughtered, massacred and mass raped many Chinese civilians. Japan is well known for bringing the United States into World War II by surprise attacking Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 in an attempt to stop America's ability to interfere in Japan's murderous imperial expansion. Four months later on April 18, 1942, the US Navy avenged Pearl Harbor when 16 B-25 Army launched off a Navy carrier and bombed Tokyo and other Japanese cities, showing that Japan was vulnerable, increasing morale and causing the Japanese to withdraw aircraft to defend the mainland. After four years of war, Japan surrendered to the Allies in August 1945 after the US dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan is also the only country to have been attacked with nuclear weapons. Shiundro Hayashi, a businessman, came to America in 1996. He was infamous for expecting women to sleep with him without having pay for it. He was killed by Martha Bowen. The Japanese are somewhat less represented than other nationalities in New York City, owing to both the great geographical distance between Japan and NYC and a perception among the Japanese that the Big Apple is full of crime. In 2004, a Japanese tourist, Hiroshi Yoshida, exploited that perception when he set up his wife Tamiko Yoshida to be murdered so that he could collect on her life insurance to pay off his debts. It backfired, however, when he claimed she'd been killed by a black man; when he was arrested and put on trial, his attempts at scapegoating caused many people to assume he was guilty before the trial began. (L&O: "Gaijin") The Yakuza is the main organized crime enterprise group in Japan, emerging after World War II.

  • Shoshanna wakes up, showers in her brightly colored apartment, and takes the train to work. She talks to her Japanese co-worker Yoshi, and they appear to be flirting, despite the fact that Shoshanna is still with her boyfriend Scott. She then talks about Yoshi with her new Japanese gal pals while they sit naked in a hot pool during what seems to be their lunch hour. Shoshanna admits that she really likes Yoshi even though she's got a boyfriend back home. Meanwhile, sitting in his own hot pool with his friends, Yoshi confesses his feelings for Shoshanna. But his friends tell him that something would have happened between them already if Shoshanna liked him back since American girls are easy. Later while talking to her boss Abigail via Skype, Shoshanna is fired or being "managed out" as Abigail put's it since the Japanese office is losing money. Shoshanna has a meltdown because she doesn't want to go back home. She heads to a bar with her girlfriends, who try to make her feel better by reminding her that she's going back to her boyfriend, which does not seem to help the situation. She explains to them that she can't afford to stay in Japan, either, and they are surprised to learn that her financial situation wouldn't allow for that. Shoshanna calls Scott back in the States, and tells him about her job. He appears to be very happy about the news, and tells her to just hop on a plane immediately, to get it over with. But even though she agrees that's the right move, she texts Yoshi to see what he's up to Instead of going to her apartment to pack. Back in New York, Hannah becomes upset when she finds pictures of naked women on Fran's phone. He admits that they are from old girlfriends that he masturbates to since he finds pornography gross. Fran also says that he doesn't use the pictures Hannah's sent him because he thinks she's acting too funny in them. Ultimately, she takes the problem to Marnie, who is in Ecuador on her honeymoon. She tells Hannah to calm down about it. Hannah talks about Fran's phone pics to Elijah and Ray, who agree to help take naked photos of her that she can text to Fran. Adam and Jessa are later camped out on the couch with Ray, watching Adam's latest acting job playing a homeless man in a crime show starring Lucy Liu. Jessa is super impressed by Adam's performance. Eventually, Ray goes to bed, leaving Jessa and Adam alone together. Adam kisses Jessa, but she is still insisting that they are just friends before bailing. Back in Japan, Shoshanna is at a club, rocking out with her girlfriends. Yoshi is there, too, and they eventually leave together, along with a few other people, and head to a BDSM salon. Yoshi is clearly dissatisfied with the impropriety of the whole situation, but Shoshanna is cool with it and ends up slipping into a sexy nurse costume and whipping one of the guys. He gets the wrong idea and comes on to her a little, at which point Yoshi interrupts them and whisks Shoshanna away, nurse costume and all. He escorts her outside and they kiss. The next day, while Shoshanna is packing to leave for New York, she listens to a voicemail message from Scott. Scott is shown waiting at the airport with flowers and a handmade sign. Shoshanna isn't there; he dumps the bouquet and leaves. Hannah gets into Fran's phone while he's sleeping and deletes all the photos of his exes — leaving only her own, which she also sets as his screen saver.

Another quirk is that Japan is really not the apocalyptic land of tens of thousands of tall skyscrapers as seen in every single Japanese anime or manga. That would be China (see: Shanghai). In reality, most buildings in Tokyo are only 3 stories tall, because they need to be earthquake-proof, plus Godzilla keeps toppling them down. This is another source of confusion for people thinking Japan is in China. Japan is also extremely insane, shown by the video clip shown above.

  • Japan is a major world power, having gained equal footing with the descendant countries of the former United States. This status is very much the result of its scientific and technological prowess; in particular, it is currently the only country with access to "radiation scrubber" technology. Also known as the "Japanese Miracle", these nanomachines can eliminate nuclear fallout, although they must be distributed before a blast occurs to work effectively. The Japanese economy is one of the world's strongest, and the Japanese as a whole enjoy a high standard of living. However, it is not without problems. Its original capital city, Tokyo, was destroyed by a nuclear bomb during World War III, resulting in the seat of government being moved to the city of Fukuoka. While it is a parliamentary democracy, political corruption is an issue, often driven by the competition of corporate, military and bureaucratic interests. These groups make use of considerable and indiscriminate surveillance and espionage. The Self-Defence Forces continue to be legally bound by Article 9 of the Constitution of Japan. They, along with a variety of police organizations, help to maintain order, often via methods that greatly compromise individual and press freedoms. The demographics of Japan have been shaken by the post-war influx of Asian refugees; their illegality confines them to ghettoes, leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, encourages identity fraud and other crime, and leads to ethnic tensions. Their presence and status constitute a major national political issue. The trade and abuse of illegal drugs, including "cyber-drugs", human trafficking, and other activities of Japanese Yakuza and Chinese organized crime syndicates also pose a threat to internal security.

  • In 1603, after decades of civil warfare, the Tokugawa shogunate (a military-led, dynastic government) ushered in a long period of relative political stability and isolation from foreign influence. For more than two centuries this policy enabled Japan to enjoy a flowering of its indigenous culture. Japan opened its ports after signing the Treaty of Kanagawa with the US in 1854 and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1931-32 Japan occupied Manchuria, and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and an ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, elected politicians hold actual decision-making power. Following three decades of unprecedented growth, Japan's economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s, but the country remains a major economic power. In January 2009, Japan assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2009-10 term.

  • The kinetoscope, first shown commercially by Thomas Edison in the United States in 1894, was first shown in Japan in November 1896. The Vitascope and the Lumière Brothers' Cinematograph were first presented in Japan in early 1897. Moving pictures, however, were not an entirely new experience for the Japanese because of their rich tradition of pre-cinematic devices such as gentō or the magic lantern. The first successful Japanese film in late 1897 showed sights in Tokyo. At the dawn of the twentieth century theaters in Japan hired benshi, storytellers who sat next to the screen and narrated silent movies. Benshi could be accompanied by music like silent films from cinema of the West. With the advent of sound in the early 1930s, the benshi gradually disappeared. Unlike in the West, silent films were still being produced in Japan well into the 1930s. A few Japanese sound shorts were made in the 1920s and 1930s, but Japan's first feature-length talkie was not until 1930. The 1930s also saw increased government involvement in cinema, which was symbolized by the passing of the Film Law, which gave the state more authority over the film industry, in 1939. The 1950s were the Golden Age of Japanese cinema.

  • Imperial Japan is one of the largest maritime empires in history. Since 1920, the Japanese Empire has slowly expanded over the Far East, culminating in the invasion of Manchuria in 1931. With the collapse of the United States and the surrounding chaos, there was no organised international opposition to the Japanese conquest, and the Empire has been expanding ever since. Imperial Japan has cordial relations with the Kingdom of Hawaii and Pacifica, as well as a peace treaty with both Germany and the USSR. Notably, they have made no attempt to sign a similar treaty with the British Empire.
  • The Empire of Japan, officially the Empire of Great Japan (Kyūjitai: 大日本帝國; Shinjitai: 大日本帝国; Romaji: Dai Nippon Teikoku; literally Great Imperial State of Japan; See below), or simply Great Japan (Dai Nippon), was an empire and world power that existed from the Meiji Restoration on 3 January 1868 to the enactment of the post-World War II Constitution of Japan on 3 May 1947. Imperial Japan's rapid industrialization and militarization under the slogan Fukoku Kyōhei (富国強兵?, "Enrich the Country, Strengthen the Army") led to its emergence as a world power, eventually culminating in its membership in the Axis alliance and the conquest of a large part of the Asia-Pacific region. At the height of its power in 1942, the Japanese Empire ruled over a land area spanning 7,400,000 square kilometres (2,857,000 sq mi), making it one of the largest maritime empires in history. After several large-scale military successes during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and the Pacific War, the Empire of Japan also gained notoriety for its war crimes against the peoples of the countries it conquered. After suffering many defeats and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however, the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allies on 2 September 1945. A period of occupation by the Allies followed the surrender, and a new constitution was created with American involvement. The constitution came into force on 3 May 1947, officially dissolving the Empire.
