An unusually high number for a football team, it has only been used by a single player, Pat Baldwin, who was brought in on loan from Colchester United in November 2009. The reason for its use was that The Gas had a large squad during the 2009–10 season, and a number of under-18 players were also assigned squad numbers that year, so 47 was actually the lowest number available when Baldwin joined the club. N.B. In terms of dress, 47 appears to prefer a dark, well-tailored suit with a red necktie and black gloves; however, given the nature of his work, 47 has been known to garb himself in everything from a mendicant's robes to Arbites carapace based on the needs of his mission. Evidence on 47's background is extremely sparse, with much of it apparently destroyed by 47 himself. What little evidence there is suggests that 47 was a vat-grown clone created by the disgraced Magos Genetor Oort-Meyer, who was found dead during an Arbites raid on his chirurgery on Scintilla in late 999.M41. The bodies of ten other men with physical features identical to 47's were also discovered during the raid, further supporting this theory; however, all of Oort-Meyer's documents were destroyed prior to the Arbites' arrival, leaving the ultimate truth of his techniques and 47's origins tantalizingly incomplete. 47 appears to follow no particular ideological or political agenda of his own, and seems content to support the agenda of whoever is paying his contract: his targets have run the gamut from heretics and criminal lords to corrupt Ecclesiarchy priests and incompetent Imperial functionaries, all taken down with the same ruthless efficiency. Alle Wege abzulaufen kostet einen bestimmt fast eine Stunde, es ist wirklich groß. Es ist keine Privatklinik, dort würde ich auch nicht arbeiten, ich halte nichts von einer Zweiklassenmedizin. Die Klinik lebt von großzügigen Spenden einiger reicher Bewohner und je mehr Spenden reinkommen, desto schöner und größer wird das Gelände und dann kommen mehr Spender und naja, desto mehr Spender kommen, desto größer und schöner wird das Gelände, dann kommen mehr Spender, und so weiter; einfache Rechnung, zumindest erklärte man mir das so. Das Einzige was mich immer wieder verärgert, ist, dass viele Verwandte und Freunde die Kranken nicht gut behandeln, Sie wissen schon, besuchen sie nur alle paar Wochen, manchmal über Monate gar nicht und fertigen die Kranken ab, bleiben eine Viertelstunde, vielleicht eine halbe Stunde und dann ist das Gewissen beruhigt. Das hält dann wieder ein paar Wochen vor, bis man dann eben wieder kommt. Klar, ich kann das irgendwo verstehen, das ist nicht einfach, es kann Menschen auffressen, aber viele fangen auch nach kurzer Zeit an, meist nach nicht mal einem Jahr, Häuser, Grundstücke, Wertsachen zu verkaufen, kriegt man ja immer mit. Entmündigungen und sowas gibt es hier am laufenden Band, viele Kranke werden auch unter Druck gesetzt, zum Beispiel ein Patient hatte ein Haus mit seiner Exfrau, in welchem er wohnte, aber was sie unbedingt verkaufen wollte und dann die Krankheit nutzte, um ihn unter Druck zu setzen. Natürlich ist es nicht einfach, aber trotzdem, so etwas wirkt immer so, als wäre der Gedanke an Heilung längst aufgegeben, vor allem, wie man sich sicherlich denken kann, ist so ein Verlust des Hauses, selbst wenn man schon einige Zeit nicht darin wohnt, immer eine schlechte Sache für die Gesundheit, die Genesung. Nicht alle Verwandten sind so, es gibt natürlich auch sehr viele, sehr nette Menschen, die die Kranken jede Woche besuchen, mit ihnen sprechen, sich Zeit nehmen und versuchen sie möglichst nicht zu belasten; aber ich denke die unfreundlichen, unangenehmen Menschen bleiben einem wohl leider immer fester in Erinnerung. Zum Beispiel eine unserer Patientinnen, Sarah Malin, war stark schizophren und wurde hier vor ein paar Jahren eingeliefert. Armes Ding, quasi keine lebenden Verwandten, nur ein Cousin, der sie aber in den rund zehn Jahren, die sie hier lebte, nur zwei Mal besucht hat. Warum weiß ich nicht, wahrscheinlich musste irgendetwas verkauft werden. Sarah Malin ist vor ein paar Wochen gestorben. Ihr Herz blieb einfach stehen. Ein Herzinfarkt. Ich kann mich wohl so gut an sie erinnern, weil sie an dem Tag eingeliefert wurde, an dem ich eingestellt wurde. Naja, nicht nur das. Sie war lange Zeit ruhig, ich beaufsichtigte sie häufiger, als ich müsste, nahm mir etwas mehr Zeit für sie als für andere Patienten. Nicht weil sie an meinem ersten Tag eingeliefert wurde und auch nicht aus einer sexuellen Anziehung, was, wie ich anmerken darf, nicht so selten vorkommt, sondern weil sie eigentlich nur Fernsehen schaute und wenn sie gerade nicht Fernsehen schaute, las sie. Sie war pflegeleicht, vor allem da sie nie ein Wort sprach und das war eine gute Möglichkeit für mich Pause zu machen. Ihr Tagesablauf war die ersten acht Jahre immer gleich gewesen, morgens um 7 aufstehen, lesen und fernsehen, Mittagessen, spazieren, lesen und fernsehen, Abendessen, lesen und fernsehen, dann ihre erste und einzige Zigarette und dann schlafen. Vielleicht rauchte sie auch heimlich, sie durfte ja raus aufs Gelände ohne Begleitung. Einmal in der Woche vom Gelände sogar herunter, aber das nahm sie selten in Anspruch. Vor zwei Jahren dann, ich weiß nicht warum, fing sie plötzlich an hysterisch zu werden, hatte Angstzustände, hörte auf zu fernsehen und schrie immer wieder eine Zahl: „47“. Es fing an nachdem sie ein Buch von Thomas Woynich mit dem Namen „Das Ende“ in einem kleinen Buchladen, am Rande der Stadt gekauft hatte. Sie hatte es erst normal gelesen, blätterte dann aber immer öfter hektischer darin herum. Auch als sie ruhiggestellt wurde, las sie immer noch in diesem Buch. Sie schrie nicht mehr, murmelte nur noch ab und zu, immer wieder diese Zahl „47“. Vorher hatte sie gar nicht gesprochen und zu sprechen schien sie große Kraft zu kosten. Es wurde mit den Monaten immer besser und vor 3 Monaten bekam sie gar keine Beruhigungsmittel mehr. Immer noch das Buch in der Hand. Sie wich allerdings immer öfter von ihrem Tagesablauf ab, bestellte sich ein paar Kleinigkeiten über das Internet, was halt mit dem kleinen Budget möglich war. Sie aß auch viel mehr, nahm recht schnell in der kurzen Zeit zu. Ich kann mich noch an ihren letzten Tag erinnern, besser an ihren letzten Abend, denn an diesem hatte ich Schicht. Sie weinte die ganze Zeit und zeigte immer wieder auf die Essenstafel. Es war Pfannkuchentag, aber aufgrund eines Lieferungsfehlers musste der Tag verschoben werden. Sie weinte so sehr, ich hatte noch nie eine Frau so weinen sehen und immer wieder zeigte sie auf die Tafel, sagte natürlich nichts, denn bis auf die 47 war sie ewig stumm geblieben. Es wirkte wirklich, als hätte ihr Leben davon abgehangen. Ich beschloss deshalb noch in einem Restaurant Pfannkuchen zu holen, keine Ahnung warum, irgendwie hatte mich das tief berührt, doch als ich zurückkam und in ihr Zimmer wollte fand ich sie, tot, Herzinfarkt. An der Wand prangte eine gemalte 47. Man gab mir die nächste Woche frei und als ich die Tage wieder kam, händigte mir ein anderer Pfleger das Buch aus. Thomas Woynich, ‚Das Ende‘. "Warum gibst du mir das?", fragte ich. "Sie hat es dir vererbt." Ich war verwundert und fragte nochmal. "Ja, Sie wollte, dass du das bekommst, siehst du“, sagte der Pfleger und zeigte mir irgendeinen Wisch von einem Notar. Ich nahm das Buch dann abends mit nach Hause und las mich ein wenig ein. Die Sätze machten oft keinen Sinn, teilweise waren es nur Wortfetzen und ich fragte mich wie jemand so etwas schreiben konnte und vielmehr noch wie jemand so etwas lesen konnte, vielleicht war es irgendein zeitgenössischer, unverständlicher Quatsch, der als besonders intellektuell galt. Ich legte das Buch dann zur Seite, erst mal ohne weiter darüber nachzudenken. Das ist nun ein paar Wochen her und ich musste, heute als ich mir gerade Pfannkuchen zum Frühstück machte, wieder an Sarah Malin denken, wie sie immer und immer wieder 47 schrie und später die Zahl 47 murmelte; und plötzlich fuhr mir ein seltsamer Gedanke durch den Kopf. Ich kehrte zurück, packte Stift und Papier und machte mich dann an dem Buch zu schaffen und dann erkannte ich es. Als ich jedes 47. Zeichen herausschrieb bildeten sich die Worte „Sarah Malin stirbt am 5.2.2014 an Herzinfarkt“. Zitternd legte ich das Buch weg, war verwirrt und tausende Gedanken stolperten kreuz und quer durch meine Gehirnwindungen. Das konnte nicht real sein, das durfte nicht real sein. Dieses Buch konnte unmöglich ihren Tod vorausgesagt haben. Trotz des Schocks packte mich schon nur wenige Gedanken später eine schreckliche Neugier, eine schreckliche Idee. - The origin of the significance of 47 can be traced to The Next Generation and Voyager writer Joe Menosky, who attended Pomona College in California. There is a club at Pomona called The 47 Society, which claims that there exists a mathematical proof that all numbers are equal to 47, and that the number 47 occurs with greater frequency in nature than other numbers. Joe Menosky first started including references to 47 in his scripts in the fourth season of TNG, and the in-joke quickly caught on among the rest of the staff. Since then, references to 47 have been included in virtually every episode of all the modern series. When asked about the significance of the number, Rick Berman once joked, "47 is 42, corrected for inflation" referring to 42 being "the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" according to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The number also seems to have some kind of significance to the writers and producers of the ABC series Alias, where it occurs almost as regularly as it does in Star Trek. The Star Trek: Phoenix-X episode "The 47's" focuses on a computer virus that implements the number 47, in a disruptive way, all over the ship.
