  • A retreat is often mistaken as a withdrawal of military forces upon defeat, or even more so ridiculous, an operation intended to lull the enemy into a false sense of security. It is in fact, the athletic predecessor to running on the Olympic scale. When an army faces its enemy, it may decide to approach their forces and just when they open fire upon their advance, they immediately turn around and run back to the nearest base without getting wounded or killed. __TOC__

  • Retreating is the act of disengaging from combat. Both player characters and monsters can retreat during combat, but only after the first three rounds. Because of this, it is often desirable in Player Killing to be able to kill your opponent in these first three rounds of combat before they are able to retreat. Also because of this, aggressive monsters are much more dangerous in RuneScape Classic than in RuneScape 2 as a player could potentially be killed before they have a chance to retreat.

  • Retreat, or retreating, is a tactic that some monsters implement when their Hitpoints falls below a certain level where they try to run away. This behaviour makes safespotting less than ideal for these monsters. Most monsters will retreat if you walk out of their roaming area and attack them with a long-ranged weapon. They might retreat even though they normally wouldn't.
  • While not actually a Psynergy that is mandatory to beat either game, it can be a huge boon to any party wanting to leave a dungeon without having to backtrack through it. One of the best examples of this is the Tundaria Tower dungeon, where the true prize is located at the beginning but can only be obtained with a special item found at the top. Another good example is after Isaac and Garet first meet with the Wise One and learn that the Sol Sanctum is about to collapse and are told to exit the dungeon. As there are no enemies during that segment, meaning no chance for experience, using Retreat here saves some time. It can also be useful during the beginning of a game, if your party of Adepts are injured and you need to return to an inn and want to avoid as many monsters as possible.

  • Retreat is a special command available to most units that is used to have have the selected squad attempt to remove itself from battle. When commanded to retreat, the selected squad(s) will stop combat and run straight back to your headquarters. During this time, the squad will break and become immune to suppression, take 80% less damage from ranged attacks, 30% more damage from melee attacks, and will gradually move faster over time on the way back to the base.

During the Retreat, over ninety percent of the elves in the forest of Cormanthor migrated to Evermeet or Evereska. When the elves abandoned the forest, they left behind legions of green warders, who continued to guard the burial sites and ancient groves that the elves had forsook.
  • After attempting to create a road-kill situation we accidentally found our way to an abandoned mill. From the outside it smelled of excrement and defeat. That is code-speak for ‘on the break and shitting ourselves’. Fortunately, we had some logs and kindling that we had “appropriated” from a vendor in the previous village. The vendor, a tall, wide chap some 40 metres high and approximately 60 years old according to his rings, could barely stand up to our hefty ax for half an hour. We started the fire with said kindling and logs with immediate effect and The Bookkeeper opened a book on the first member to run away screaming. There was a hint of ghosts, but only the younger members were unafraid. It would be a long time before this nightmare could end, and there was plenty to be done in the meantime. Not only needed the little ones a bit of tender love and care, they had to be instructed in the ways of The Society. Mother gin was allowed to flow, as was [[mother] port, mother lager, mother rum and mother teetotaller, on whom Secretary was releasing his maggot ridden crotch. Unfortunately we the Society had only been able to appropriate 400 units of beer, 10 units of spirits, 31 units of port, and thirteen wheel barrows of a local delight referred to only as “Yorkshire’s ruin”. Many feared that this supply of nectar wouldn’t suffice, but yet we survived. “The focus on drinking is one that should remain behind locked doors and not let out in the open”, the Belgian spoke solemnly while pointing towards the Secretary, who was failing to clench a bottle of port. It was about time for dinner when a noise was heard; was Moreau out on the moors again? The snow, scattered as if thrown by an invisible hand, was an indication that could not be trusted. And so it came to be that when the stone-clocks were wet with godly ambrosia – so beautiful and yet so deadly - on that day of extraordinary proportions, as the Lord had prophesied, the dark tea time of our souls fell like The Historian’s corduroy trousers as he stood above the virgin brook, imploring his soldier to give him relief from the weaknesses of our human form. The Society’s newly appointed Gamekeeper had visions of grandeur that reached beyond his task of keeping badgers at bay. It was not sure if he was delirious because of the prospect of a good shoot-out with those infamous creatures – below even the Havisocks on the ladder of outcasts – or of the cold: he was stuck in a car in the middle of nowhere and the face of The Intern kept appearing in front of the windscreen – frightening by day, let alone in the light of a full moon.

Retreat should be carefully used when near or surrounded by melee squads, as it does indeed cause melee to deal more damage. Calling for a retreat while surrounded may very well only ensure that your squad dies faster. Use any available ability such as grenades, jumps, or knockdowns before retreating to ensure your squad has a clear path to the base.

The ability of the attacker to retreat gives a significant advantage to the attacker, who can take risky attacks and breakoff if they go badly. It also allows spoiling attacks where the attacker retreats to avoid being stuck in vulnerable position. The lack of a defender retreat can be criticized for lack of realism. Major retreats were conducted successfully in WW2. The very nature of naval battles made it difficult to pursue a retreating foe, as attacking carriers needed to stay still to recover their planes, while the defenders could retreat immediately. Here are a number of possible retreat variants: * Attacking units may retreat from amphibious invasions * Attacking aircraft may not retreat from amphibious invasions * Defending units can retreat to adjacent friendly (or unoccupied sea areas). Land units can retreat onto adjacent transports. Submarines can retreat before combat. If the area retreated to is attacked, the retreating units don't participate in the combat, can't retreat again and are destroyed if all the defenders are destroyed. * Use the above retreat rule, but prohibit retreat into contested areas. * Limit combat to 1 round. The side that loses more units must retreat (unless its foe was annihilated). On a tie, the attacker retreats. If retreat is impossible, fight a second round of combat, with the attacker retreating if the defender is not annihilated. Submarines may retreat before combat. * The attacker must retreat if he inflicts no hits in a round. Allow retreats from amphbious invasions. * Submarines may retreat before combat.

In the Year of Lightning Storms Cambrizym of Candlekeep wrote that the Retreat had come to an end, though not by official proclamation but rather through having reached its own tipping point, by which almost all who had meant to leave had already done so, leaving only a few lonely pilgrims to make the journey by themselves. Shortly thereafter, the Retreat began to reverse itself, with many from Evermeet returning to Faerûn's shores.
