Dabei ignoriert er völlig, dass dessen Tod auch seinen Tod und das Ende der beiden Universen bedeuten würde. Die Beiden können mittels ihrer Zeitraumschiffe durch Zeit und Raum reisen und jagen sich dabei gegenseitig: Lazarus versucht den Anti-Lazarus zu ermorden, während der Anti-Lazarus ihn davon abhalten will, nicht nur um sich, sondern um beide Universen zu retten. Das Problem dabei ist, dass sie sich nur im Magnetkorridor zwischen den Universen treffen können. Sobald einer der beiden in das jeweils andere Universum wechselt, nimmt er dort die Position seines Gegenstücks ein. Sie gelangen schließlich ins Jahr 2267 auf einen Planeten am Rande des durch die Föderation kartographierten Weltraums. Als Lazarus auf diesem Planeten eintrifft, löst sein Sprung ein ungewöhnlich starkes kosmisches Pulsieren aus, das in der ganzen Milchstraße Auswirkungen auf die Naturgesetze hat. Das Raumkontrollkommando gibt deswegen der USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) den Befehl, den Planeten näher zu untersuchen, da man eine Invasion befürchtet. Auf dem Planeten trifft man auf Lazarus, der jedoch im Folgenden mehrmals gegen sein Gegenstück ausgetauscht wird. Beide Versionen erzählen den Sternenflottenoffizieren mehrere Lügengeschichten über ein Monster in humanoider Gestalt, das angeblich ihre ganze Zivilisation ausgelöscht hat und an dem sie nun Vergeltung üben wollen. Captain James T. Kirk, Commander Spock und Doktor Leonard McCoy erkennen bald, das irgendetwas an den Geschichten des Fremden faul ist, brauchen aber einige Zeit, um zu erkennen, dass es sich tatsächlich um zwei verschiedene Individuen handelt. Lazarus benötigt indessen die Dilithiumkristalle der Enterprise, um damit sein Zeitraumschiff, mit dem auch der Zugang zum Magnetkorridor möglich ist, mit einer Energiequelle ausrüsten zu können, die es ihm erlaubt, endlich zu seinem Gegenstück zu kommen. Nachdem der Anti-Lazarus dies zunächst verhindern kann, gelingt es Lazarus, zwei Kristalle zu stehlen und zu seinem Zeitschiff zu beamen. Als Captain Kirk ihn stellen möchte, wird er versehentlich in das Antimaterie-Universum transportiert, wo er auf Anti-Lazarus trifft. Dieser bittet ihn, die beiden für immer im Tunnel zwischen den beiden Universen einzusperren, um so die Universen vor der Zerstörung zu bewahren. Kirk wird zurückgeschickt und sorgt dafür, dass Lazarus in den Magnetkorridor eintritt. Dort greift ihn der gleichzeitig eingetretene Anti-Lazarus an und hält ihn fest. Nałożył na ludność specjalne podatki, dzięki czemu był w stanie wystawić armię liczącą 50.000 żołnierzy, z którą liczyły się wszystkie okoliczne państwa, najbardziej zaś państwo Brzetysława, objemujące północną część Sarmacji. W roku 1702 Lazarus wypowiedział wojnę Brzetysławowi. W ciągu kilkunastu miesięcy chorągwie trzyczaszkowskie podbiły całe terytorium państwa Brzetysława, za wyjątkiem Grodziska, który stawiał opór. Atakujące wojska kanclerza Lazarusa przeciągnęły przez Zatokę Północną żelazny łańcuch, aby uniemożliwić broniącemu się miastu uzupełnienie zapasów. Przez cały okres oblężenia miasto było wielokrotnie szturmowane, a huk artylerii nie umilkł nawet na jeden dzień. Wreszcie, w Wielkanoc roku 1704 wycieńczony Grodzisk poddał się najeźdźcy. Brzetysław został pojmany przez wojska trzyczaszkowskie, udał się następnie na emigrację, zrzekając się tytułu i praw do niego dla siebie i swoich potomków na rzecz Lazarusa. Kanclerz, który rządził już całą Sarmacją, postanowił nazwać wyspę od swego imienia - Lazarią, oraz ogłosił się w asyście biskupa trzyczaszkowskiego "królem w Lazarii". Miał wtedy 62 lata. Lazarus zmarł w wieku 73 lat, pozostawiając po sobie Sarmację zjednoczoną pod panowaniem jednego państwa. Nie miał potomków, więc po jego śmierci wojewodowie, chcący za wszelką cenę nie dopuścić do wojny domowej, postanowili podzielić się władzą. Każdy z nich pozostał przy swoich dotychczasowych dobrach, uzyskując także nowe, zdobyte na północy. Postanowili, iż odtąd monarchę będą wybierać jednomyślnie oni. So far there are no official statements about this. But it is a fact that Lazarus has very good connections to a multitude of governments, groups of spacepirates and other corporations.
