- Stratovarius is a Finnish power metal band that formed in 1984. Since their formation (originally as Black Water), they have released 13 studio albums and one live album. Along with Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Angra and Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius are considered one of the leading groups of the power metal and symphonic metal genre. The band has known many chaotic lineup changes: there are no founding members in the band since Tuomo Lassila's departure in 1995, and currently, the longest standing member is Timo Kotipelto, who joined in 1994.

Their material contains elements of power metal, neoclassical, speed, progressive and symphonic metal. To this day, the band has sold over 2.5 million records worldwide. Among their most importan singles, there are: Black Diamond (1997), Huting High and Low (2000), Eagleheart (2003), Paradise (1997), S.O.S (1998), Speed of Light (1996) and I Walk to My Own Song (2003).
- The band name was changed to STRATOVARIUS in order to illustrate Tolkki’s ripping off the concept of metal with classical styles with choirs and orchestral instruments. A pending lawsuit by the survivors of the family known for making the world-renowned Stradivarius violins quickly followed.

W 1985 roku w szeregach zespołu pojawił się gitarzysta i wokalista Timo Tolkki, stając się z czasem jego niekwestionowanym liderem. Pierwszy album - Fright Night - został wydany w 1989 roku. W roku 1995 wykrystalizował się najbardziej znany skład zespołu - Timo Tolkki , Timo Kotipelto, Jari Kainulainen, Jens Johansson i Jörg Michael - który zarejestrował razem 7 płyt studyjnych. Na przestrzeni lat szczególnie dużą popularność poza Finlandią Stratovarius zdobył w Japonii[2]. Na początku trzeciego tysiąclecia grupa kilkakrotnie wstrzymywała swoją działalność, głównie ze względu na stan zdrowia lidera. 3 kwietnia 2008 roku Timo Tolkki oświadczył, iż grupa definitywnie kończy swój żywot. Jeszcze w tym samym roku, w sierpniu, pozostali członkowie oświadczyli powrót zespołu, ale bez lidera. Już z udziałem nowego gitarzysty Matiasa Kupiainena Stratovarius nagrał album Polaris, którego premiera miała miejsce 21 maja 2009 roku.
