  • Privateer is a naval unit available mid-game in several Civ games. It allows you to steal gold from your opponents and attack their sea units without declaring a war. The nationallity of a Privateer is hidden from everyone except the creator (as it flies the famous Jolly Roger). This makes it a possible target for everyone, especially a powerful AI.
  • The Privateer is a naval mercenary unit that can be shipped from the home city in Age of Empires III.
  • Privateer is a Nemesis Perk. __NoToC__
  • A Privateer is a ship's captain who has been authorized and received a certificate of mark from a government allowing him to plunder vessels of their political enemies - or in other words, a legalized pirate. Once a privateer has received his authorization by Garcia de la Avaricia or Pierre Le Porc, they will plunder ships of his patron's enemy and to not attack vessels flying their flag.
  • Privateers are a class of mercenaries in Random Kingdom VX2. They are similar to privateer-pirates of our world, yet markedly different in that they carry out specific assignments in any terrain, received via , rather than freely raiding in naval territory only. It is similar to mercenary, thief and navigator, inspired by any type of pirate - ocean, sky, space.
  • A privateer was a legitimized pirate, a private person or starship commissioned by an authority to fight or harass enemy vessels. In the Anoat sector, the Trade Spine League was half-union, half-privateer network.
  • A privateer was a private ship that held a letter of marque, a document from a government that allowed then to conduct maritime warfare on their behalf. This was typically capturing foreign ships, and selling them as prizes, with the proceeds divided amongst the crew, backers and government. As merchant ships were often armed already, it was easy to convert them to the trade.

  • A privateer was a person or ship authorized by a government by signed issued contracts, Letters of Marque, to attack foreign shipping during wartime. Privateering allowed a pirate to become an agent of a government and become a "legitimate pirate" commissioned in service. Pirates were issued a "private license" by the government they side with, which grants the holder rights to attack the enemies of that government. It was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having to spend treasury resources or commit naval officers and it gave pirates a way to commit piracy without fear of imprisonment.
  • The Privateer was a freighter out of which the Screaming Skulls operated in the 2490s. It was medium sized and weather beaten, but personalized to the Screaming Skulls' needs. In 2494, the Screaming Skulls met with Jim Raynor and Tychus Findlay to facilitate a trade of crystals. After this, and the acceptance of a job to steal port junkers, the two groups met on the Privateer, and enjoyed fancy gold colored liquor in its hold.
  • A privateer was a privately-owned warship operating with the (overt or covert) tacit approval of a larger authority to attack and seize the shipping and property of designated enemies of that authority. The term was also applied to the captains and crew of such ships. In some cases privateers were sanctioned because the authority lacked the resources or infrastructure to support more conventional military forces. In other cases, privateers provided one entity with a means to harass its rivals while preserving deniability as to the source of that harassament.
  • PrivateerGender: MaleRace: HumanPrivateers often end up being in the list of end game characters, mostly because they are incredibly fast (Their SPD stat is even higher than city thieves), and serve as decent axe users all the way through out. As the Emperor the Privateer can also develop the rapid stream formations, a formation that can guarantee the player moves first every single turn. It is for this reason that many believe this formation to be one of the best in the entire game. Named for explorers & other seamen.
  • A privateer was a private person or private warship authorized by a country's government by letters of marque to attack foreign shipping. Privateers were only entitled by their state to attack and rob enemy vessels during wartime. Privateers were part of naval warfare of some nations from the 16th to the 19th century. The crew of a privateer might be treated as prisoners of war by the enemy country if captured. The costs of commissioning privateers was borne by investors hoping to gain a significant return from prize money earned from enemy merchants.
  • The Privateer has several unique moves: Casually walking up to his target, the Privateer unsheathes his cutlass, before painfully smashing the hilt into his victim's face, knocking them off balance. He then takes advantage of this and stabs his sword through their abdomen, before withdrawing it and leaving them bleeding to death.
  • The Privateer was a Carrack-class cruiser owned and operated by privateers under the command of Captain Jacob Astor. As a privately-owned raider of commerce, she was a terror to merchantmen because of her voracious speed and Navy-scale weaponry. In 14 ABY, her captain was hired by a high-ranking Imperial officer to "deliver" an aggressively-bred virus to the star system of Daca (Calamari). The cruiser fufilled the mission by apprehending a modular cargo freighter, killing the crew, implanting the virus, and sending the ship on its way to Dac. Their action resulted in the Dacan Pandemic.

He then takes advantage of this and stabs his sword through their abdomen, before withdrawing it and leaving them bleeding to death. Carefully approaching his target from behind, the Privateer unsheathes his sword and slashes it across their lower back. When his victim falls to their knees, the Privateer wedges his cutlass into the right of their waist, before carelessly pushing them forwards with his foot and sheathing his weapon. Running up to his target, the Privateer roughly pushes their head, and, while they stumble back, draws his cutlass. Swinging it above his head, he suddenly slashes his cutlass to the left, severing his victim's jugular vein and causing them to collapse to the floor while he sheathes his sword away. Racing at his target from behind, the Privateer withdraws his cutlass, before cruelly slashing it across their upper back. As his victim reacts to this unexpected attack, the Privateer hacks his sword into the right of their chest, slashing through their lung from behind and wedging his weapon into their torso. To free his cutlass, the Privateer kicks his victim's legs from behind, forcing them onto their back. Grabbing his seated target's foot, the Privateer drags them off the bench until their head rests against it. Before his victim can do anything to defend themselves, he forcefully kicks them in the face, violently sending their head backwards and breaking his target's neck on the bench behind them. Leaping down from above, the Privateer draws his cutlass in mid-air, before crashing down on top of them. Using the momentum, he stabs his sword roughly into their chest, subsequently impaling their heart and killing them instantly. As his victim lays dead on the ground, the Privateer sheathes his cutlass at his waist and leaves.

In some cases privateers were sanctioned because the authority lacked the resources or infrastructure to support more conventional military forces. In other cases, privateers provided one entity with a means to harass its rivals while preserving deniability as to the source of that harassament. In the strictest sense of the term "privateer", the "larger authority" was a national government which issued a formal license ("letters of Marque", in traditional Earth terminology) to commit certain kinds of actions against certain targets of certain hostile governments. It was this formality that technically distinguished a privateer from a pirate. However, privateers were also employed by sub-national entities (Houses/Lines, local governments, Orion trading clans, corporations, etc.) as well, usually more covertly. This (and violations of the terms of their letters of marque by privateers) has resulted in an intertwining in the usage of the terms. (TOS novel: The Final Reflection; TNG novel: Blaze of Glory)

The costs of commissioning privateers was borne by investors hoping to gain a significant return from prize money earned from enemy merchants. It has been argued that privateering was a less destructive and wasteful form of warfare, because the goal was to capture ships rather than to sink them. The privateer was authorized by a national government to engage as a commerce raider, interrupting enemy trade. Privateers were of great benefit to a smaller naval power, or one facing an enemy dependent on trade: they disrupted commerce, and forced the enemy to deploy warships to protect merchant trade. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without spending public money or commissioning naval officers. Some privateers have been particularly influential in the annals of history. The captured cargo and the prize vessel itself, if serviceable, would be sold at auction with the proceeds distributed among the privateer's owners, officers and crew; sometimes the vessels were commissioned into regular service as warships.
