  • Freighters (a.k.a. freight ships) are terran transport craft. Commercial freighters tend to travel across pre-determined routes, though deviations are easy to make. During the Guild Wars, the Kel-Morian Combine used armored freighters to transport materials between war-torn planets.
  • In starship classification the term freighter refers to a type of ship (spaceship or starship) that is used to move cargo. Freighters come in various shapes and sizes, some owned by large companies or governments. Others are privately owned by their captains and can be commissioned for service. Routes taken by military freighters to transport supplies are called supply lines. (Dragon Ball Z vs. Star Trek: The Way of Infinity)

(TNG video games: Armada, Armada II; et al.) Freighters carry cargo inside their own hulls, in designated spaces called cargo holds or cargo bays. Larger vessels of these classifications are more likely to carry cargo in the form of bulk goods and sealed, standardized containers. In many designs, cargo containers can be docked externally to the main hull, to be undocked and exchanged at each port.

Larger vessels of these classifications are more likely to carry cargo in the form of bulk goods and sealed, standardized containers. In many designs, cargo containers can be docked externally to the main hull, to be undocked and exchanged at each port. A tanker is specifically design to carry bulk matter in gas or liquid state. Cargo ships sometimes have some capacity for carrying passengers, although the quality of accomodations can vary widely. Transports and starliners are more specifically designed to transport people.
  • "This massive vessel can hold plenty of LEGO brick cargo. Use the spacebar to pick up and drop off loads." —Description The Freighter is an improved version of the Tugboat, capable of carrying up to 25 bricks.
  • Possessing the largest cargo holds of any ship class in the game (around 40 times that of the best industrial class ships), freighters are very large and travel very slowly. Freighters are also entirely unarmed with no room for modification or expansion. Their unrivaled capacity for cargo transport, however, makes freighters very valuable commodities to corporations or players that need to move large goods or large quantities of materials from one place to another with a large escort. Freighters can carry many ships within its hold, provided they have been "packaged" for transport, but are incapable of carrying any capital class ships within their hold as the smallest have a packaged volume of 1 million m³, while the largest freighter can only carry 980,000 m3 with maximum skills. One freighter class exists for each major faction. Freighters cost between 750 million to 1 billion ISK to make (depending on the market value of minerals), however require around 5 billion ISK worth of blueprints and can take more than a month of construction time (for component parts and including around 11 days for the ship itself). Blueprint originals are normally used due to the excessively lengthy period of weeks that freighter blueprints take to copy, but it is not unknown for some enterprising individuals to produce a few blueprint copies once they have completed their own freighters in an effort to reduce overhead. These currently sell around 900 million ISK (this varies on the exact ship, different races have larger cargoholds which makes their market value greater), the price varying with current market prices of components and minerals.

These are also found in the Ginoya System, as far as Naneroh. * The Midorian freighter comes in two variants, "heavy" which includes all hull cargo pods; and "light" which only contains the front and rearmost pods. |-| Nivelian= * Because of the raised bridge, it is possible to hitch a ride on top of these freighters. * The Midorian Freighter looks similar to the Nivelian Freighter, perhaps because Midorian Ships are based off Nivelian Ships. * Midorians captured a couple of Nivelian freighter that transported the bomb needed to destroy the Void Mothership in the base game.
  • The most noticeable feature of freighters were their large cargo bays. Furthermore, they were usually equipped with light armament to defend against pirates and oncoming asteroids. One of Doctor Phlox' first assignments was examining a cargo ship orbiting Denobula, which had suffered an explosion with many casualties. (ENT: "Fight or Flight") In 2286, Doctor McCoy believed he and the crew of the former USS Enterprise would be reduced to working a freighter, as punishment for violating Starfleet regulations, while en route to their next assignment. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) Due to its proximity to the Cardassian Union and the Bajoran wormhole, many freighters docked at Deep Space 9. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) An unnamed merchant ship was mentioned in the script for "All Good Things..." . In the anti-time present of 2370, a fleet of five Terrellian transport ships heard about "the Light" – a spatial anomaly in the Devolin system – and its power of healing the infirm and the elderly from this ship.

Many Freighters are operated entirely by computers and managed by planetary AIs, however some are still crewed by humans. In the UNSC, many freighters are maintained, mostly to move supplies, food, and equipment to and from fringe worlds in the Outer Colonies. Most of these are maintained not by the UNSC Navy, but by the UNSC Department of Commercial Shipping. Some private companies and individuals maintain their own freighters. These ships can also sometimes be armed and used as warships, particularly by militant Rebel factions, such as the Eridanus Rebels. A common type of freighter is simply a large cargo container attached magnetically to a Propulsion pod which contains the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine and sublight maneuvering systems. These containers can travel up and down space elevator strands, allowing for fast loading and management of cargo. Once on top of the elevator, the propulsion pod is attached to the container, effectively turning it into a slipspace-capable freighter. A colonial high-capacity space tether system can have dozens of propulsion pods and cargo containers operational at a time, all managed by a shipping operations AI. These freighters are mostly automated, and human crews are a rarity. Mail between colonies is often delivered on the freighters' on-board memory.
