  • The Merchantman is a naval unit in the Colonization games.
  • A merchantman is a type of cargo vessel which can transport goods and personnel.
  • The Merchantman was a Altair-class transport that saw service during the 23rd century. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era) In 2284, the Klingon spy, Valkris, delivered information on the Genesis device to Commander Kruge on the Merchantman, which was destroyed by Kruge after he discovered she had viewed this information. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
  • In 2285, the Merchantman was a small freighter which carried classified Federation data regarding the Genesis Device to a Klingon Bird-of-Prey that was under the command of Kruge. The Merchantman was destroyed when Kruge learned that Valkris, a Klingon operative traveling aboard the ship, had seen the information. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
  • Banu traders are renowned for their merchant prowess, traveling the spacelanes and trading with everyone from humans to the Vanduul! Their sturdy, dedicated trading ships are prized beyond all other transports, sometimes passing from generation to generation of Banu. Banu technology offers players a completely different way of experiencing their universe. The Merchantman is a promised feature of the $27 million crowdfunding goal.
  • In 2285 the Klingon operative Valkris managed to obtain a copy of Admiral James T. Kirk's report on his most recent voyage, which included a summary of the Genesis Project. She traveled on board the Merchantman to rendezvous with Commander Kruge's Bird-of-Prey. Valkris transmitted Kirk's report to Kruge, and stated that he would find the report useful. Upon realizing that she had seen the data Kruge had his ship to attack and destroy the Merchantman.
  • A Merchantman was a classification describing merchant ships of nearly any size. They were common in the Caribbean in the late 17th to mid 18th centuries. They were built in the same style as frigates and other military ships, but were stubbier, were more lightly armed, and had much larger holds for cargo. Merchantmen were generally used in trading ventures throughout the Caribbean Sea and South Archipelago. Many merchantmen were unlicensed, and therefore did not carry obligations for special protection from naval ships.
  • Merchantmen are the maritime equivalent of Tradesmen. Unlike Tradesmen, Merchantmen can't be created — they are created whenever a Tradesman enters an ocean, and convert back to being a Tradesman once they reach dry land. Because they are slow and highly vulnerable to attack by ships, particularly light vessels, any area with high trade traffic must be policed by a fleet of ships to prevent raiding. On the other hand, raiding may prove to be lucrative if you can use light ships to intercept your opponents' Merchantmen, thus depriving him of a means of generating Wealth on water maps. Units such as the Arab Fusta and Baghlah Hrbiyah can be used to great effect here, as they are not only faster than any ship in the game, but also generate additional Wealth whenever they down their prey.

Although Kruge and his crew believed that the crew was killed in the attack, some of the crew managed to make it to escape pods before the ship was destroyed. They were later rescued by Starfleet, and reported that they had been attacked by a Klingon vessel. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Search for Spock)

Units such as the Arab Fusta and Baghlah Hrbiyah can be used to great effect here, as they are not only faster than any ship in the game, but also generate additional Wealth whenever they down their prey. If you are playing as the Portuguese, then trade can be lucrative, as you are able to construct Trade Caravels. These are smaller caravel-type vessels (compared to the Caravela Redonda which is a larger warship), and are considerably speedier and hardier vessels, making them much harder to intercept. The added speed also confers better results from inter-city trade for the Portuguese on water maps, thus making them the premier faction to be used on water maps.

They were built in the same style as frigates and other military ships, but were stubbier, were more lightly armed, and had much larger holds for cargo. Merchantmen were generally used in trading ventures throughout the Caribbean Sea and South Archipelago. The East India Trading Company used merchantmen known as East Indiamen (named so for the company itself) for trade and commerce, but not for battle. Most Indiamen relied on armed escorts for protection. Many merchantmen were unlicensed, and therefore did not carry obligations for special protection from naval ships.
