  • The Roman Empire was one of the most famous periods in the history of Ancient Rome. It was a time when Rome was ruled by an emperor who had supreme power, who, at least at the beginning, officially ruled by "will of the Senate". During its height, the Pax Romana—or Roman Peace—ruled roughly a quarter of the ancient world's population, and its territory stretched over an amount of land comparable to that of the modern day United States. The Empire followed on from the Roman Republic and lasted until 286 AD, when it was divided into the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire.
  • <default>Roman Empire</default> Location Position Ruler Appearance The Roman Empire was a civilization that emerged in the area now known as Italy, a country in southern Europe. Its first emperor was Augustus, the nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar became official dictator of the Roman Republic after he defeated the Pompey Magnus and the "Republican" faction of the Senate. After his assassination, Rome would be further divided internally, with this second period of political instability culminating in another civil war, in which Augustus would emerge victorious).

  • The Roman Empire (Latin: Imperium Romanum) was an ancient civilization on Earth that was one of the fore bearers of the modern human civilization that now inhabits Earth. It existed from the 1st century BC until September 4, 476 when the final Western Roman Emperor was deposed. The capital of the Empire was the city of Rome, and the state succeeded the Roman Republic, which had lasted from the 5th to the 1st centuries BCE. In the mirror universe, the history of the Roman Empire followed a similar course. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)
  • The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the government of the city of Rome on Old Earth. It continued the expansionist policies of the Roman Republic, and adopted much of the civilization (mathematics, literature, theatre, architecture, etc) of the Eastern End of the Mediterranean Sea after conquering it. The Western part of the Roman Empire had collapsed as a political entity by about 450CE, while the Eastern part of the Roman Empire survived in one form or another until about 1450CE.

  • The Roman Empire ruled over the Mediterranean region when Jesus Christ walked the earth. The Jewish people had been long been ruled by foreign powers, including the Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Ptolemaic (Egyptian) empires. After a period of independence under the Maccabees, the Jewish people came under the dominion of the Roman Empire. The land of Israel was at the far eastern end of the Roman Empire; it provided a land route to the breadbasket of the Nile delta. The region became a client kingdom of Rome under a series of puppet kings, the most famous of which was Herod the Great. After Herod's death, the land was ruled by four Tetrarchs. One of these Tetrachs, Herod Archelaus, was deposed by Rome in 6 AD. The Tetrachy of Archelaus included Judea, Samaria and Idumea. Renamed Iudaea Province, it came under the direct rule of the Roman Empire. Pontius Pilate was one of the prefects of Iudaea Province. Messianic expectations were high during this period, and some Jews, particularily the Zealots, rebelled against Roman rule. Between 66 AD and 135 AD, there were three wars of rebellion between the Jewish people and the Roman authorities. Herod's Temple was destroyed in 70 AD. Paul, in his missionary journies, travelled to many places in the Eastern Roman Empire, including Asia Minor, Greece, Cyprus, and, at the end of his journeys, Rome. Catholic tradition holds that Simon Peter also travelled to Rome, and became the first Bishop of Rome. As Christianity began to diverge from Judaism, the Roman authorities suppressed Christianity as a new "mystery religion." However, Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in 312 AD, and the Edict of Milan legalized Christianity. Christianity became the state religion under Emperor Theodosius I in 381 CE

  • The Roman Empire existed on Earth from 31 BC to 476 AD and was one of the most powerful of the planet's early civilizations. The territory of the Romans extended primarily through the region of the Mediterranean, encompassing parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia Minor. The Empire was governed by a Senate and, for most of its history, an Emperor who was sometimes referred to as "Caesar" after Julius Caesar or "Augustus" after Caesar Augustus. Though the Empire brought many technological and societal advances into being on Earth it had a dark side that included brutal military campaigns and gladiatorial combat for public entertainment. Religious dissidents were also brutally persecuted. Rome had no sun worshippers. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses" ) In real life, Romans honored the Sun at the winter solstice in a festival called the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Birthday of the Invincible Sun). Additionally many Romans durning the Empire participated in a cult of the sun god Mithras. The planet 892-IV, which evolved according to Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development, had a similar government to the Roman Empire, though that government persisted for much longer in the planet's evolution. The people had advanced to a state corresponding to the industrial revolution in Earth's history. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses" ) In 2366, while Jean-Luc Picard contemplated the impending battle with the Borg, he wondered if the Emperor Flavius Honorius, while watching the Visigoths coming over the seventh hill, truly realized that the Roman Empire was about to fall. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds" ) In 2369, Richard Galen compared Jean-Luc Picard, who was on a survey mission, to a "Roman centurion patrolling the provinces, maintaining a dull and bloated Empire." (TNG: "The Chase" ) In his review of William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, Garak felt the entire piece was a farce because Caesar was "supposed to be a leader of a great empire yet he can't see what's going on under his own nose." (DS9: "Improbable Cause")
  • The Roman Empire, named for its capital city, was the phase of the ancient Roman civilization characterized by an autocratic form of government. From the time of Augustus (who informally transitioned the Roman Republic into the Empire) to the Fall of the Western Empire, Rome dominated Western Eurasia and North Africa, and composed the majority of the region's population. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled approximately 5 900 000 km² (2,300,000 sq.mi.) of land surface. Rome's influence upon the culture, law, technology, arts, language, religion, government, military, and architecture of civilizations that followed continues to this day. In the immediate wake of the Empire's fall, its Eastern half, which had become a separate political entity in a schism, continued as the Byzantine Empire.

The Western part of the Roman Empire had collapsed as a political entity by about 450CE, while the Eastern part of the Roman Empire survived in one form or another until about 1450CE. The Roman Empire contributed enduring themes to later civilizations. Perhaps most important ws the idea of a universal or nearly so, unitary state, revived in the Holy Roman Empire in Western Europe around 800 CE. And the idea of a universal code of law, largely in the form of the Justinian Code. Several religions from that area became important in Roman life, most notably Mithraism (especially popular in the Army) and Christianity (at first mostly in the lower and slave classes). Christianity survived well into Post Diaspora times in various forms. (HH5)

The capital of the Empire was the city of Rome, and the state succeeded the Roman Republic, which had lasted from the 5th to the 1st centuries BCE. At its peak, the Roman Empire controlled most of Europe, as well as portions of Asia and Africa. The Roman Empire at its largest controlled 5,900,000 square kilometers of territory. However, after reaching its greatest extent, the Empire began a long, slow decline. The city of Rome was sacked in 410 by the Visigoths, during the reign of Emperor Honorius, and subsequently fell before the end of the century. Almost 2,000 years later, during the Borg Incursion of 2366-2367, Captain Jean-Luc Picard wondered if Honorius was truly cognizant of the fact that his Empire was collapsing while his capital was being sacked. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds") The Roman Empire played a major role in the history of Earth, with its influences in areas such as culture, law, language, government, and architecture continuing into the 24th century. Both the Williams and Kirk families on Earth were very interested in Roman history, to the point that some family members named their children after Roman historical figures. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures and TOS novel: Home is the Hunter) On the planet 892-IV, or Magna Roma, the culture developed a parallel Roman Empire, which did not fall and existed for at least 20 centuries. This parallel Empire reached a level of technology similar to that of 20th century Earth by the time the USS Enterprise visited the planet in 2268. (TOS episode: "Bread and Circuses") It was later theorized that the Preservers had taken a number of Earth Romans and seeded that world with these people, who established their Empire on that world. (TOS novel: Ex Machina) After the visit of the USS Enterprise to Pollux II, it was theorized that the Beings had visited other worlds in addition to Earth, such as Vulcan and perhaps Romulus as well. This theory provided a possible reason why Romulan culture was so similar to the culture of the Roman Empire. (Startrek.com article Strange Relations: Romulans and Vulcans) In the mirror universe, the history of the Roman Empire followed a similar course. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)
