  • Cold fusion refers to nuclear fusion of atoms at conditions close to room temperature. Linea was able to create cold fusion using Terra-root. (SG1: "Prisoners") Dial Home Devices are powered by a cold fusion reactor core.
  • Cold fusion gained attention in 1989 when Fleischmann and Pons held a news conference in which they reported producing nuclear fusion in a tabletop experiment involving electrolysis of heavy water on a palladium (Pd) electrode. They reported anomalous heat production ("excess heat") of a magnitude they asserted would defy explanation except in terms of nuclear processes. They further reported measuring small amounts of nuclear reaction byproducts, including neutrons and tritium. These reports raised hopes of a cheap and abundant source of energy.
  • In 2259, Spock initiated a cold fusion eruption in an active volcano on the planet Nibiru. The successful detonation rendered the volcano inert, causing lava to congeal into enormous pinnacles of rock. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
  • Cold fusion is technically the name for any nuclear fusion reaction that may occur well below the temperature required for thermonuclear reactions (millions of degrees Celsius). There are a number of established processes by which this can occur, although currently none of these can produce more energy than is required to sustain and contain the reaction.

The term is most often used in a more narrow sense: namely, a poorly understood phenomenon in electrolytic cells in which a small (table-top) setup near room temperature and standard atmospheric pressure, which has been controversially suggested produces the fusion of hydrogen (specifically deuterium) atoms into helium.
  • In 2259, Spock initiated a cold fusion eruption in an active volcano on the planet Nibiru. The successful detonation rendered the volcano inert, causing lava to congeal into enormous pinnacles of rock. (Star Trek Into Darkness) In Star Trek Into Darkness, the illusion of rendering the volcano dormant was difficult to create. "The transition from lava to rock was the trickiest part," noted CG simulation supervisor Dan Pearson. (Cinefex, No. 134, p. 81) For more information, see Lava. The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 152) defined "cold fusion" as the, "Nuclear process in which molecular kinetic activity is instantly reduced to near-zero." Further, in the notes to the entry, the authors wrote, "Not to be confused with the hypothetical technique of the same name for creating nuclear fusion energy at room temperature."
Enthusiasm turned to skepticism and scorn as a long series of failed replication attempts were weighed in view of several theoretical reasons cold fusion should not be possible, the discovery of possible sources of experimental error, and finally the discovery that Fleischmann and Pons had not actually detected nuclear reaction byproducts. Although cold fusion has gained a reputation as pathological science, some researchers continue to investigate cold fusion and publish their findings at conferences, in books, and scientific journals. The field is sometimes referred to as low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) studies or condensed matter nuclear science. The majority of a review panel organized by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in 1989 found that the evidence for the discovery of a new nuclear process was not persuasive. In 2004, the DOE convened a second cold fusion review panel which reached conclusions that were similar to those of the 1989 panel.
