The earlier albums are especially great for a laugh, especially when he actually was portraying Spock. He has been in semi-retirement since the mid-'90s, only taking on the occasional role that really interests him. Retired from on-screen acting completely after a stint as The Ghost William Bell in Fringe, and now basically says "If you want to talk about Spock from now on, speak to my replacement." Po jeho odchodu z armády se zapsal v "Pasadena Playhouse" v Kalifornii. Pracoval jako taxikář, prodavač v obchodě s domácím zvířectvem, uvaděč v kině a výrobce sodové vody, aby mohl platit účty během jeho studia herectví. Zaměřil se na tvorbu romantických komedií, jejichž hlavním tématem jsou partnerské vztahy (Tři muži a nemluvně, Směšně o lásce, Být dobrou matkou). Je autorem devíti knížek poezie (např. You and I - 1973, I Thing of You - 1974, We Are All Children Searching for Love - 1977), deseti gramofonových alb, několika knih o fotografii, a autobiografie I Am Not Spock (Nejsem Spock - 1975).
