abstract
  • Garth (known as Garth of Izar) was a Starfleet line officer on active duty during the 23rd century. (TOS: "Whom Gods Destroy") The episode gave Garth no other name. Fan fiction has sometimes assumed that this is his surname. FASA materials refer to him as "Kelvar Leonard Garth" (FASA RPG: The Four Years War). Garth was renowned for his victory at Axanar, which was studied thereafter at Starfleet Academy. James T. Kirk, as a midshipman, regarded Garth as one of his heroes. Different sources have Garth in command of different vessels at Axanar. FASA had him as captain of the USS Xenophon, while the TOS novel: Garth of Izar had him in command of USS Heisenberg. During the Four Years War, Garth commanded Task Force Constitution from USS Constitution. Ships assigned to the task force included USS Avenger and USS Illustrious. (Star Trek: Avenger: "Early History of USS Avenger") In Orion Press continuity, Garth was commanding officer of USS Lexington during this time. In Star Trek: The Four Years War continuity, Garth was commanding officer of the Xenophon and, later, the 7th Battle Group of the First Fleet. In the early 2260s, after a transporter accident at Antos IV, the indigents of that world taught Garth to heal through cellular metamorphosis. This apparently drove him mad and Garth attempted to destroy the Antosians but was prevented from doing so. However, Garth killed both his executive officer and second officer. (TOS novel: Garth of Izar) Garth was court-martialled and charged with murder. He was then sentenced to rehabilitation at the Federation penal colony on Elba II. In 2268, when USS Enterprise was delivering a new therapy to the colony, Garth masqueraded as Governor Donald Cory and kidnapped both Kirk and Spock. After their release, the therapy was administered to Garth. Towards the end of Kirk's first five-year mission, Garth was considered fit for duty. He was present at a memorial service for Enterprise officers at Starbase 4. (Star Trek: Phase II: "Going Boldly")
  • Garth emerged from Starfleet Academy to make good on his promise as a star pupil. Among contemporaries like Captains Pike and Garrovick, Garth became known as an eminent explorer, with a distinguished record for charting new worlds. As a tactician, he was a pivotal figure in the Federation victory at the crucial Battle of Axanar. His exploits were immortalized in his own time, becoming required reading at the Academy and inspiring members of a new wave of young officers. His legacy was tarnished following the accident that left him badly maimed. The gentle beings of Antos IV nursed him in his darkest hour, and gifted him with their technique of cellular metamorphosis to repair his mangled body. In gratitude, he "offered them the galaxy" – an offer refused. By this point, he was no longer the honored captain of the history books, and his diseased mind found such offense in Antos' rejection that he ordered his forces to annihilate the entire species. Whatever loyalty he once inspired in his crews vanished, and they refused his order. Federation authorities deemed it appropriate that Garth be sent to an asylum for the criminally insane. By 2268, he was in a ward of Elba II.
