In 1978, the country, then officially known as the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, came under the control of a communist secular government, the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan, led by Nur Mohammed Taraki and Hafizullah Amin. Among the functionaries in this new government was Saleh Amir, who didn't care for the PDPA's politics but liked the comfort that came with a high-level government job. Fearing that the PDPA would ally itself with the Soviet Union, the US government began funding rebels, taking advantage of discontent among the largely-religious citizens who feared that the secular government would destroy their way of life. This had two effects: first, it made the government fear that it had enemies within, and on 14 September, 1979, Amin overthrew Taraki who died shortly thereafter (whether Taraki died or was murdered remains undetermined); and second, it drew Soviet attention to the country and on 24 December of that year, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. The invasion created an uproar throughout the Muslim world, where many people were beginning to fear that the secular governments imparted upon them by Western powers would destroy Islam. Thousands of mujahideen (Islamic holy warriors) entered the country, and received enthusiastic support from the US Government under Ronald Reagan, who saw the conflict as an opportunity to expose the weaknesses of the Soviet Union. After ten long and bloody years, the Soviets were forced to leave the country in defeat. Once the Soviets were driven from the country, the United States government followed soon after, believing that the threat of another jihad would be sufficient to deter the Soviets from any further military adventures in the Middle East. The mujahideen did not, however, and the war-ravaged PDPA now faced the prospect of a revolt. The PDPA begged the Soviets for help in exchange for access to their country, and while the Soviets obliged to the eventual tune of $3 billion a year, by 19 March, 1992, the PDPA had collapsed. Four years of civil war ensued, and in 1996, the country had fallen under the rule of the Taliban, an obscure group of Islamic scholars who found the chaos to be a perfect opportunity to impose a strict Islamic theocracy upon the country. Many people, particularly women, were locked up or killed under the Taliban. Saleh Amir, as one of the remaining holdouts from the PDPA, escaped persecution by offering his daughter Nafeesa to the son of a minister in the Taliban in exchange for a diplomatic post in the United States. When Nafeesa ruined the deal by taking a boyfriend in America, Amir and his son Jaleel killed her and used their diplomatic immunity to try and avoid charges. Jaleel was arrested and found guilty of the murder, but Amir fled the United States and his current whereabouts are unrevealed. (SVU: "Honor") Shortly after the Amir incident, Al Qaeda, a terrorist group that was harbored by the Taliban government in Afghanistan, attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. 19 al-Qaeda terrorist hijacked four airliners. Two were flown into the World Trade Center, both of which collapsed two hours later. Another hit the Pentagon. A fourth destined for Washington, DC crash in Pennsylvania after the passengers attempted to take down the hijackers. Having not technically been involved, only providing safe haven for the terrorist, the Taliban regime attempted to wash their hands of the incident by offering to hand over Al Qaeda to US authorities, but demanded that evidence be furnished to prove that the Al Qaeda members within their borders were connected to the terrorist attacks. The United States Army opted to invade the country instead, and the Taliban were officially deposed. A democratic and semi-secular government has since been in place. At present, Afghanistan is ostensibly under the control of a new, US-backed government, but geographic and ethnic complications have forced the US Army to make deals with regional warlords, including the drug lord Qaadar Khaleel, who is currently incarcerated after using US assistance to bring heroin into the United States. • Afghanistan is a country in Asia. The recognized government of Afghanistan was taken over by Islamic extremists and the Taliban. The Taliban were still in control in 2001. In 2001, after a terrorist bombing in Jerusalem, it was briefly hypothesized to have been connected to Afghan terrorists. It turned out to be the work of Palestinian terrorist Abdul Majeeb. In 2002, the Salmon Afkham, the Iranian son of Ayatollah Afkham flew from Afghanistan to the United States for specialized heart surgery. In 2004, the Iranian ambassador cited stable relations with their neighbors, including Afghanistan, as reason enough for not developing nuclear weaponry. In 2006, Deputy National Security Advisor Kate Harper hypothesized that decreased cotton farming would lead to an increase in opium production in Afghanistan.

  • Afghanistan was a country in Asia. In the late 1830s, the British Empire occupied parts of Afghanistan, including Kabul, to halt Russian expansion in Central Asia which the British feared would threaten their rule in India. The Afghans rebelled against the occupying British forces, sparking the First Afghan War which lasted until 1842. (PROSE: Mire and Clay) The British Empire fought against Afghanistan again some decades later in the Second Afghan War. Doctor John Watson fought in the conflict. (PROSE: All-Consuming Fire) In 1989, the Soviet Union withdrew its troops from Afghanistan. (COMIC: The Broken Man) The British Army was in operation in Afghanistan once again during the early 21st century. Danny Pink served in Afghanistan for five years (TV: The Caretaker) and was haunted by his experience of accidentally killing a young boy. (TV: Into the Dalek, Listen, Dark Water)

  • This country, much in Western news in the last years as the refuge of Al-Quaeda members, has actually had solar activity for some time. A newspaper account (Kabul New Times, July 6,1985 (in the Soviet era) discusses research activity for utilization of solar energy, conducted under the auspices of the Solar Energy Institute, a part of the Academy of Sciences of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The effort was principally directed towards the potential heating of houses (not cooking, in the article shown) in recognition of "an increasing deficiency of traditional (presumably meaning wood) and other energy sources". The article further states that since Afghanistan has 300 sunny days per year, conditions are favorable for generating solar energy. The device pictured in the article is a flat plate collector, with two scientists working on its development. Not long after this article was published however, the solar research work most likely ceased with the end of the Soviet regime and the beginning of the Taliban period. In a later era, this one under Taliban rule, the SERVE Solar Project, operating in Peshawar, Pakistan, moved its operations to Jalalabad, Afghanistan, in order to serve the population of refugees then returning to Afghanistan, after the departure of the Soviets. SERVE is a British humanitarian agency with projects in health, disability services, relief, and environmental issues. Its work in Pakistan began in refugee camps filled by an Afghan population in 1980. While working on other problems, SERVE discovered the severity of fuel shortages and based on that need, developed a large scale and very successful solar cooking project (see the report on Pakistan). Refugees who moved back took their box cookers with them and demand in Afghanistan was substantial. Initally, SERVE trucked box cookers to Kabul for sale in the market places. Later, they established an office in-country. In 2001, as Taliban rule tightened, SERVE (considered to be a "Christian" organization and hence not acceptable) was forcibly ejected from the country, its gates locked, its staff deported. (Newspaper clipping, NYTimes, date?) After Taliban rule ended, and under the present US led military assistance while the provisional government becomes established and stable, solar cooking has returned to the country. Several projects are underway currently, all too new to have been evaluated for the achievement of their goals. The following agencies are known to have a presence in the country, with a solar cooking component. Under the leadership of retired SERVE staffer, Gordon Magney (now desceased) and his wife Grace Magney, who returned to live in Kabul in 2002, a small project is underway utilizing a new box cooker developed by an American NGO, the Solar Oven Society (See section in chapter Multi-National Promoters). The new cooker, called the Sport is made of recycled soda bottles with a Mylar cover and (soon to be available) shiny reflectors. Four hundred of the cookers were shipped to Kabul, unassembled, along with the equipment required to assemble the finished product. Under the supervision of Magney, that has now been accomplished. Training of users and sale of the cookers at a cost subsidized by a number of Minnesota churches is underway. Another project in Afghanistan is sponsored by the Rotary international network (also discussed in the Multi-National Promoter section). A humanitarian unit called The Temple Solar Project was established by several Rotary groups in November of 1998. It has been supplying large community sized cookers called The Villager (produced by Sun Oven) to communities around the world. The cost of each villager is $10,000, plus shipping costs of an additional $3,500. Five of the Villagers have been shipped to Afghanistan; two are already installed and in operation. The others are in transit or awaiting delivery. The first oven was installed in a school, in collaboration with an organization called Friends for Afghan Redevelopment, cooking food for students and staff.. Some smaller solar cookers are not particularly effective in cooking the traditional Afghan bread, an unleavened "naan"type, which is however easily made in the Village. The large oven can also be used for bakeries as income generating projects or in institutional settings such as schools or hospitals. Logistical difficulties are continuous, including moving the goods through customs, appropriate training, and so on, but the projects are proceeding according to plan. An individual, Laila Petty, was prepared and equipped, by an experienced solar cook associated with SCI, to promote solar cooking, prior to a extended visit she was planning to make to Afghanistan. A native Dari speaker, Ms. Petty was particularly interested in the plight of the "internal displaced persons" (IDP) in Afghanistan who do not receive international assistance from refugee organizations, but are nonetheless homeless and poorly served by charitable organizations. Early in her yearlong stay in Afghanistan, she made a number of contacts with relief agencies; did a number of demonstrations, more or less on her own, and conducted training for cooks in several IDP locations. Her work was well received, but agencies in the country were already overburdened by the difficulties of working in the country and none took up her offer to assist in development of a solar cooking project. She was even able to locate a, potential manufacturer of CooKits, the device she was using to demonstrate, and the cheapest solar cookers available. However, none of her work resulted in any substantial interest. She ultimately found a different cause to work on, but would be willing to assist in a solar project should one develop.

  • During the Cold War, the Soviet Union spread their influence in Afghanistan, which led in 1979 to a bloody war between the Mujahideen and Soviet-led Afghan government forces. Revolver Ocelot was involved in the conflict, where he was feared by the Mujahideen as "Shalashaska" due to his brutal interrogator skills. Boris Vyacheslavovich Popov participated in the Soviet invasion, killing dozens of guerillas. International journalist Holly White reported on events there. In 1984, Kazuhira Miller and some Diamond Dogs soldiers were caught in an ambush by Soviet forces in the region of Northern Kabul, with all but Miller being killed. Miller in particular was taken prisoner, transferred to Da Ghwandai Khar after passing through Da Wiallo Kallai, and brutally interrogated, losing his right arm and lower left leg in the process. His sunglasses had been left at the battlefield. Venom Snake rescued Miller during this war, who had been tortured by the Soviets in the country. Ocelot also aided Venom Snake in this mission from Mother Base, although he could only go as far as Spugmay Ruins before leaving Venom Snake after rescuing him from the hospital, feeling Venom Snake needed to do it by himself on the field to regain his legendary title of Big Boss. Big Boss then arrived at one of the Soviets' outposts in the Afghani region and the closest one in vicinity, Da Wiallo Kallai, and managed to find intel files supplying the specific location of Miller, and transferred the files over to Ocelot at Mother Base shortly after scanning the documents. During this time, there were 14 major Soviet bases as well as over a dozen Soviet outposts in the Afghanistan area. Although the Mujahideen were successful in driving out the Soviets, their inability to form a stable government and their subsequent infighting, resulted in a new armed movement, the Taliban, coming to power. The Taliban government's links with terrorist group al-Qaeda, led the U.S. to launch the War in Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Future mercenaries Sundowner and Mistral participated in this war.

  • Ahmad Shah DURRANI unified the Pashtun tribes and founded Afghanistan in 1747. The country served as a buffer between the British and Russian Empires until it won independence from notional British control in 1919. A brief experiment in democracy ended in a 1973 coup and a 1978 Communist counter-coup. The Soviet Union invaded in 1979 to support the tottering Afghan Communist regime, touching off a long and destructive war. The USSR withdrew in 1989 under relentless pressure by internationally supported anti-Communist mujahedin rebels. A series of subsequent civil wars saw Kabul finally fall in 1996 to the Taliban, a hardline Pakistani-sponsored movement that emerged in 1994 to end the country's civil war and anarchy. Following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., a U.S., Allied, and anti-Taliban Northern Alliance military action toppled the Taliban for sheltering Osama BIN LADIN. The UN-sponsored Bonn Conference in 2001 established a process for political reconstruction that included the adoption of a new constitution, a presidential election in 2004, and National Assembly elections in 2005. In December 2004, Hamid KARZAI became the first democratically elected president of Afghanistan and the National Assembly was inaugurated the following December. Karzai was re-elected in November 2009 for a second term. Despite gains toward building a stable central government, a resurgent Taliban and continuing provincial instability - particularly in the south and the east - remain serious challenges for the Afghan Government.

  • Afghanistan //, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (, ), is a landlocked country that is located approximately in the center of Asia. It is variously designated as geographically located within Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. It has religious, ethno-linguistic, and geographic links with most of its neighboring states. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast. The name Afghanistan means the "Land of Afghans." Afghanistan is a culturally mixed nation, a crossroads between the East and the West, and has been an ancient focal point of trade and migration. It has an important geostrategical location, connecting South, Central and Southwest Asia. During its long history, the land has seen various invaders and conquerors, while on the other hand, local entities invaded the surrounding vast regions to form their own empires. Ahmad Shah Durrani created the Durrani Empire in 1747, with its capital at Kandahar. Subsequently, the capital was shifted to Kabul and most of its territories ceded to former neighboring countries. In the late 19th century, Afghanistan became a buffer state in "The Great Game" played between the British Indian Empire and Russian Empire. On August 19, 1919, following the third Anglo-Afghan war, the country regained full independence from the United Kingdom over its foreign affairs. Since the late 1970s Afghanistan has suffered continuous and brutal civil war, which included foreign interventions in the form of the 1979 Soviet invasion and the recent 2001 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban government. In late 2001 the United Nations Security Council authorized the creation of an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). This force is composed of NATO troops that are involved in assisting the government of President Hamid Karzai in establishing the writ of law as well as rebuilding key infrastructures in the nation. In 2005, the United States and Afghanistan signed a strategic partnership agreement committing both nations to a long-term relationship. In the meantime, multi-billion US dollars have also been provided by the international community for the reconstruction of the country.

  • Elections for a new government held in summer 2009 were clouded by serious charges of irregularity. In September 2009 the issue was whether to expand the American military presence to engage in more nation building. In Aug. 2009, General Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, said the Afghan government was riddled with corruption and NATO was being undermined by tactics that alienate civilians. He called the Taliban insurgency "a muscular and sophisticated enemy" that uses modern propaganda and systematically reaches into Afghanistan's prisons to recruit members and even plan operations. He said official corruption is as much of a threat as the insurgency to the mission of the International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, as the U.S.-led NATO coalition is widely known. The weakness of state institutions, malign actions of power-brokers, widespread corruption and abuse of power by various officials, and ISAF's own errors, have given Afghans little reason to support their government," McChrystal reported. McChrystal told Washington that he urgently needs more forces within the next year; without them, he warned, the eight-year conflict "will likely result in failure." By November no decision had been made on the urgent request. For recent American and NATO involvement see Afghanistan War The 2009 presidential election was badly tainted by fraud. In the 1990s, the country came under the control of the Taliban, and in turn became a base of operations for terrorist group al-Qaeda. In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, a multinational coalition invaded the country, and oversaw the removal of the Taliban from power. However, maintaining stability in the country has continued to prove difficult.

  • Afghanistan is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia.
  • Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country that is located approximately in the center of Asia. It is variously designated as geographically located within Central Asia or South Asia. It is bordered by Iran in the south and west, Pakistan in the south and east, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast. Image:Afghanistan.gif Afghanistan is a crossroads between the East and the West, and has been an ancient focal point of trade and migration. It has an important geostrategic location, connecting South and Central Asia and Middle East. Because of this, the land has been a target of various invaders and conquerors, as well as a source from which local powers invaded surrounding regions to form their own empires. Ahmad Shah Durrani created the Durrani Empire in 1747, which is considered the beginning of modern Afghanistan. Since the late 1970s Afghanistan has suffered continuous and brutal civil war in addition to foreign interventions in the form of the 1979 Soviet invasion and the 2001 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban government. In late 2001 the United Nations Security Council authorized the creation of an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). This force is composed of NATO troops that are involved in assisting the government of President Hamid Karzai in establishing the writ of law as well as rebuilding key infrastructures in the nation.
  • Afghanistan has consistently been a lynch pin in the arena of international relations. During the 19th century, the British had attempted to control the region as a means of passage into India. In 1978, a Communist coup overthrew the Daud Khan (Republic of Afghanistan)that had previously existed, but as the new government was unable to establish full control over the country they asked Soviet troops to intervene within a year of the coup. Islamist groups in Afghanistan, the main opposition to the Marxist leadership, mobilized in response to this invasion, launching a civil war that would last until 1996. These Islamist militants would later form the backbone of the Taliban and eventually Al Qaeda, their arms being mainly supplied by the US as a part of that country's containment policy towards the Soviet Union. In 1996, the Taliban established control over the entire country. After September 11, 2001, the United States along with a number of NATO allies invaded Afghanistan in attempts to dismantle Al Qaeda, a fringe group being given refuge by the Taliban, and this US-led coalition has occupied the country since. Throughout the early 20th century, Afghanistan had been a model of public diplomacy in the Middle East. An Islamic State, Afghanistan had been one of the remaining jewels from "The Great Game" of the 1800’s. Within the past quarter century however, the opposite is true. After the end of the Soviet incursion in the late 1980’s, a power vacuum in Afghanistan led to regional chaos under warlords. Eventually, the Taliban, a fundamentalist militant group, was able to gain the upper hand, and after 1996 it implemented a strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law. Afghanistan cut itself of with any interaction with Western nations. Newspapers and media outlets were shut down as writers and editors were arrested and executed. Many members in the international community, including the United Nations and Iran, severed diplomatic ties with the Taliban government. During this time, Afghanistan's economy recovered after years of war, though opium production, which had become a dominant feature of the country's economy, all but disappeared as a result of strict Taliban law enforcement. It should be noted that despite the human rights abuses occurring in Taliban Afghanistan, the world community, especially the US, was remarkably silent. Afghanistan’s Pamir mountains border with Pakistan became the new home for al Qaeda during this time. After Al Qaeda attacked New York & Washington DC on September 11, 2001, the US government as well as its NATO allies, invaded Afghanistan in an effort to dislodge Al Qaeda and their hosts, the Taliban. Notably, Iranian intelligence offered to the US played a key role in the coalition's initial decisive victory. Since then, there have been numerous attempts by the US-propped Afghan government to create a new government and constitution. Over the past five years, Afghanistan has attempted to control each of regions, but because of continuing instability much of the country has returned to warlord hands. With the establishment of a new government, under President Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan has been slowly working its way back into the international community. Opium farming has experienced a massive resurgence and lawlessness is still prevalent in rural areas. The rise in opium farming has created a virtual drug war along the border with Afghanistan, as hundreds of Iranian policemen have been killed in attempts to block the transfer of drugs through Iranian territory.
