  • The volcano is a unique biome. It is a large mountain made out of stone, Ash Stone, Ash and lava. Caverns are found more often here in this biome. Survival in this biome would be difficult due to the lack of trees, impossibility of farming, and lack of passive mobs. Be careful though. This volcano could explode at anytime! On the other hand, finding one can be useful due to the abundance of Ash, which can be made into coal.
  • The Volcano is a minor location in Dora the Explorer. • Volcanic eruptions are disasters that occur in Tropico 4 and Tropico 5. When an active volcano is present on an island, it will erupt every once in awhile, igniting buildings and killing people within its Vicinity's danger zone, which can be viewed as an overlay. Like any disaster, eruptions can be disabled by running a sandbox game with no random events.
  • Volcanoes are opening in the surface of a planet, leading directly to magma chambers below. They are formed over hundreds and thousands of years. An eruption of a volcano is considered to be a natural disaster; volcanoes release molten lava, hot ash and clouds of sulphur into the atmosphere.

  • When Edward City was transported 3,000,000 years into the future, a Volcano divided the city in half. The player must travel through it in order to get from one side to the other. The Volcano had been thought dormant up until the 17th year after the Criticality Incident, when it began to "act up". This activity forced Inostrancevia migration to the area, creating difficulties for the inhabitants of the city. The survivors' weapons proved inadequate against the beasts' armored skin, forcing engineers to create a new weapon for use against them.
  • Volcano is an area on the Fire Planet in Space. It is hard to pass because people had to get past the gusts of hot air that shoots out. A rock caterpillar ball creature lives here. You can find Sir Pelasus here. The Chosen One got the Ice Arrow here. Inside is the Meltdown Cave.
  • Volcano is a combo ability obtainable in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Kirby obtains it by combining the Stone and Burning abilities. When he activates it, he shoots rocks upwards from a volcano hat like a cannon. The rocks go half as far and are fired less rapidly when Kirby is underwater. Kirby can also tilt sideways to attack. Whatever side Kirby is not facing is still vulnerable to damage from enemies themselves or projectiles.
  • Although most people try to simply ignore them, their frequent eruptions make this very difficult. As they spew forth their fiery magma, they claim it is a "cry for attention." In actuality, some volcanoes really do just want to be loved. Most, however, are only following an annoying trend laid down by their forefathers, the mighty attention-whoring volcanoes of old, who annoyed the dinosaurs to the extent that the poor dinos practically jumped in front of that damn meteor when it hit.

  • Volcanos occur along plate boundaries or at hotspots (erratic). They are usually on islands, narrow land (peninsula or isthmus), rift valleys, oceanic ridges. Lava/magma flows on the surface or in lava tubes. When near the surface they are under 2 m in diameter. Lava tubes can be much larger further down, but the lava flows in bankless rivers. Lava lakes only persist in the calderas of volcanoes on rift valleys or islands.

(AUDIO: The Fires of Vulcan, TV: The Fires of Pompeii) The eruption was set off by the Tenth Doctor and his companion Donna Noble, destroying the Pyroviles and opening a rift in time for a second. The event was also a fixed point in time and could not be changed. (TV: The Fires of Pompeii)
  • Volcano was designed by Kristin Looney (USA) in 2000. It is the original game for which the Volcano board was made. The game is played with six sets of Icehouse pieces and was thus the first game to use all six colors available at the time. Volcano is produced by Looney Labs, a small game company of which Kristin Looney is the owner, CEO and president. Besides the standard rules, there are several variants: The first Volcano tournament was held in 2001 in Columbus OH (USA). Volcano has been compared to mancala games. It has in common with them:
  • To enter the HQ and embark on a mission, you must go through the flowing waterfall of lava at the entrance of the volcano. In order to enter and become a Super Moshi, you must follow certain clues around Monstro City. When you complete the Season 1 Mission: Super Weapon Showdown!, you gain access to the secret chamber in the Volcano, where the Mission; 20,000 Leagues Under The Fur took place. The chamber holds a giant gem that provides the player Rox weekly.
  • The planet Tollan had volcanoes, but the planet was evacuated due to massive volcanic activity. (SG1: "Enigma") The Taranis outpost on the planet Taranis used geothermal energy from a formerly dormant supervolcano to power its shield. However, as more energy was drawn, the volcano became extremely active. The Atlantis expedition came to Taranis to help most of the people escape, but the Stargate was buried in lava, and a massive dust cloud emerged from the volcano in a massive eruption, which rendered the planet uninhabitable for many years. (SGA: "Inferno")
  • A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot, molten rock, ash, and gases to escape from below the surface. Volcanic activity involving the extrusion of rock tends to form mountains or features like mountains over a period of time. Volcanoes can be caused by "mantle plumes". These so-called "hotspots" , for example at Hawaii, can occur far from plate boundaries. Hotspot volcanoes are also found elsewhere in the solar system, especially on rocky planets and moons.
  • Two fire demons will indefinitely provide you with sandwiches upon defeat throughout the whole fight (also hinting you must consume one when you realize you can't deal damage to the volcano by normal means). Eat a sandwich to turn "beefy". It does not matter how much damage you do, but how many times you hit the volcano. If you already have sandwiches when you enter the fight, it will be much easier. Then just keep attacking him until the sandwich effect runs out. The windmill attack is the best tactic to use, as the fireballs will not affect you when the lava rocks hit your area. Watch out for crosshairs on the ground, these show where lava rocks will fall. Because he is a minor boss, you get no reward for beating him.
  • His associate Emmit Reese (Don Cheadle) notes the quake caused no major damage, but seven utility workers are later burned to death in a storm drain; one escapes and survives but is severely burned on one side of his face at MacArthur Park. As a precaution, Roark tries to halt the subway lines which run parallel to where the deaths took place, but Los Angeles MTA Chairman Stan Olber (John Carroll Lynch) declines, feeling there is no threat to the trains.
  • A volcano is a royal eruption but there are also unholy volcanoes like putting the Pentagon in the middle of Europe, and then giving Europe a haircut. For at least two years, the U.S. has been conducting a secretive and immensely sophisticated campaign of mass surveillance and data mining against the world, allowing the intelligence community to monitor and distort the habits, conversations, and activity of millions of individuals at once. And with an upgrade scheduled for later this year, the top contender to win the federal contract and thus take over the program is a team of about a dozen companies which were brought together in large part by Aaron Barr - the same disgraced CEO who resigned from his own firm earlier this year after he was discovered to have planned a full-scale informat
  • Volcanoes are generally found where two to three tectonic plates pull apart or are coming together. A mid-oceanic ridge, like the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by "divergent tectonic plates" pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by "convergent tectonic plates" coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another (like the San Andreas fault). Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching of the Earth's crust and where the crust grows thin (called "non-hotspot intraplate volcanism"), such as in the African Rift Valley, the European Rhine Graben with its Eifel volcanoes, and the Rio Grande Rift in North America.
  • The study of volcanoes is volcanology. (TNG: "Pen Pals" ) One of sixty-two moons orbiting a specific gas giant had a volcanic terrain. When Commander Charles Tucker III and Arkonian pilot Zho'Kaan crash landed there in 2152, the fact that the terrain – due to the volcanic activity – was rich in diamagnetic minerals interfered with a distress call from a makeshift transceiver Tucker set up, the minerals preventing the signal from being transmitted. (ENT: "Dawn") Janus VI had no current volcanic activity as of 2267. (TOS: "The Devil in the Dark" )
  • The story begins by describing Mt. Monokoa, a volcano which has been dormant for about 300 years. The last time it erupted, it destroyed a nearby island city completely and sent tidal waves around the world. Now, the volcano is showing signs of eruption, threatening the small town (which has been rebuilt over the years) yet again. Lois Lane and Clark Kent are sent to the scene by Perry White, who gives each of them steam tickets to the island, as well as press passes, ordering Lois to keep them safe as she stows them in her purse.
  • Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by "divergent tectonic plates" pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by "convergent tectonic plates" coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust (called "non-hotspot intraplate volcanism"), such as in the African Rift Valley, the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America and the European Rhine Graben with its Eifel volcanoes.
  • A Volcano is some thingy that spews out fire or lava or whatever. Mario and sometimes Wario enjoys sitting on top of these for thousands of years until suddenly Voom! She is flying away to another planet. This page is related to the character villain Mario, the hero Bowser, and other people in their series.
  • Volcano is a type of Terrain in the world of Master of Magic. Volcanoes are unique in that, by default, they exist only as part of Chaos Nodes - there are no free-standing Volcanoes strewn about the two Planes. However, File:Icon Chaos.png wizards may have two different ways to bring new Volcanoes into existence - often to the detriment of their enemies. Chaos Node Volcanoes never contain any Minerals. Raised Volcanoes theoretically could - but due to a bug in the game code they may only do so with the Unofficial Patch 1.50 (more on this below).
  • Volcano is a 1997 Disaster Movie directed by Mick Jackson and starring Tommy Lee Jones. He plays Mike Roark, head of the Los Angeles Emergency Management Center. One day, after an early morning Earthquake, Roark discovers fire erupting below the city. A scientist, Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche), points him to volcanic activity brewing underneath the La Brea Tar Pits. Later that night, an actual volcano emerges from the tar pits and erupts. It's up to Mike and his management team, including his second-in-command Emmit Reese (Don Cheadle), to save the city from total destruction.

Text
  • "Did you hear anything of Terrei?"
  • "How bad was the eruption?"
  • "Bad," Rona says. "It's a thousand leagues from the Free Cities and they still felt it. With nowhere to hide, the Dothraki must have been massacred."
  • "We must continue to hope. As soon as we can, we must search for Terrei and her son."
  • "It was a volcano, my [lord/lady]." Rona brings you the news. "An eruption somewhere in Essos. Half the continent is blanketed in ash."
  • "May [the Seven/the Drowned God/R'hllor] protect us!"
  • "Terrei is dead. We must inform Lord Oridane his goodsister and his heir are dead."
  • Rona shakes her heard. Septa Eleanor speaks into the grim silence. "There must be people who survived. The gods would not kill so many..."
  • Maester Lucas replies, "We are told they're the entrance to the seven hells, my [lord/lady]. Mountains that open into liquid flame."
  • "Maester Lucas, does the Citadel teach anything about volcanoes?"

  • Volcano is the fifth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Satyricon. It was released on 25 October 2002, through Moonfog Productions. The album is one of the band's more successful records, having won several awards including the Norwegian Grammy for Best Metal Album, Alarm awards for Metal Album of the Year, Song of the Year for "Fuel for Hatred" and an Oslo award for Best Overall Album. A video was made for the single "Fuel for Hatred".
Against regulations, Roark and a colleague Gator Harris (Michael Rispoli) venture down the storm sewer in the park to investigate. They are nearly burned alive and barely escape with their lives when hot gases suddenly spew out of a crack in the concrete lining and flood the tunnel. Geologist Dr. Amy Barnes (Anne Heche) believes a volcano may be rapidly forming beneath the city with magma flowing underground (similar to the formation of the Mexican volcano Parícutin which emerged and grew tremendously in just one week) but unfortunately, she has insufficient evidence to make Roark take action. Barnes and her assistant Rachel (Laurie Lathem) venture in the storm sewer to investigate the scene of the accident, where they discover a crack in the ground which released the gases earlier. While they are taking samples, a more powerful earthquake strikes and Rachel is killed when she falls into the crack. Near the La Brea Tar Pits, smoke rises out along with lava bombs. Steam explodes from the sewer system, while a subway train carrying passengers derails underground, trapping them inside and exposing them to severe heat and toxic gases, which cause them all to eventually pass out. Roark helps injured firefighters out of the area. However, minutes later, a newly formed volcano erupts from the tar pits and lava begins to flow freely down Wilshire Boulevard, incinerating everything in its path, including Roark's truck and an LAFD fire truck, killing two firefighters trapped inside. Roark and Kelly become separated as she is injured when a nearby lava bomb burns her leg and she is taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by Dr. Jaye Calder (Jacqueline Kim). Meanwhile, Olber leads his team through the Red Line tunnel to the derailed train to look for survivors. They save everyone, but Olber notices that the train driver is still missing and goes back to find him. He finds the driver still alive but unconscious just as the lava reaches the train and begins melting it. Olber sacrifices his life to save the conductor by jumping into the lava flow, throwing the driver to safety as he dies. Roark, Barnes and police lieutenant Ed Fox (Keith David) devise a plan to stack concrete barriers at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, creating a cul-de-sac to pool the lava as helicopters dump water on it to form a crust. While the operation is successful, Barnes later theorizes that the magma is still flowing underground through the Red Line subway extension, and calculates that the main eruption will occur at the end of the line at the Beverly Center near Cedars-Sinai. To prove this, Dr. Barnes and Roark lower a video camera into the tunnel to watch it and then a fast-moving flow of lava incinerates the camera. They calculate the speed and realize they have 30 minutes until the lava hits the end of the red line. Through Roark's direction, explosives are used to create channels in the street to divert the flow of lava into Ballona Creek, which will later flow into the Pacific Ocean, but Barnes realizes that the street is sloping in the opposite direction. Roark engineers another plan to demolish a 22-story condominium building (currently under construction by Jaye's husband) to block the lava's path from entering the city. When Gator refuses to abandon an LAPD SWAT cop who has gotten trapped under a core column while slotting explosive charges just as the lava reaches the dead end of the Subway tunnel extension and explodes out of the ground in a massive geyser, he sacrifices their lives to detonate the final explosive charge. Roark then spots Kelly nearby, trying to retrieve a small boy who wandered off, putting them in the path of the collapsing building. He barely manages to save both of them from being crushed as the building collapses. The plan is successful and the lava flows safely to the ocean. Roark walks out from the wreckage with Kelly and the young child alive. The death toll is nearly 100 people and thousands are injured. It starts to rain, rinsing the ash and dust off the surviving civilians. Roark soon returns to work. The film's epilogue displays a graphic stating that the volcano, named "Mount Wilshire" is still in an active state.
  • "A volcano is a big rock type mountain thingy that spews hot red stuff. This is what a volcano word apear to be to a lesser strategereist-aroo but under the veil of its cloak of disguised Covert hidden obviousness it is actually a branch of Santa's workshop. To get into a "volcano" just go to the lava bit and dive in then swim to the bottom where your incinerated corpse or whats left of it fine figure will be deposited in the waiting room.
  • A Volcano on Earth forms when hot magma or molten rock from deep in the Earth erupts at the surface. Volcanoes also exist on some other Planets. Some volcanoes form on land, others form under Water. If volcanoes forming under Seas or Oceans become large enough to break the surface of the water they can become volcanic Islands.
(SGA: "Inferno") Planet Novus is known to have an active supervolcano that erupted in the last thirty years did the planet uninhabitable. The entire population of Novus, which was set at millions managed to leave his plane before the outbreak. Several expedition was sent out to find other suitable worlds, and the rest of the people flew to a colony in their spaceship. (SGU: "Common Descent")
  • Volcano is the final level of Far Cry, detailing Jack Carver's epic conclusion of the story behind Far Cry. It takes place in Dr. Krieger's Volcano Laboratory, namely the volcano itself. Two men die in this level: Doyle, Carver's guide, and Krieger, Val's arch-enemy.
And with an upgrade scheduled for later this year, the top contender to win the federal contract and thus take over the program is a team of about a dozen companies which were brought together in large part by Aaron Barr - the same disgraced CEO who resigned from his own firm earlier this year after he was discovered to have planned a full-scale information war against political activists at the behest of corporate clients. The new revelation provides for a disturbing picture, particularly when viewed in a wider context. Unprecedented surveillance capabilities are being produced by an industry that works in secret on applications that are nonetheless funded by the American public – and which in some cases are used against that very same public. Their products are developed on demand for an intelligence community that is not subject to Congressional oversight and which has been repeatedly shown to have misused its existing powers in ways that violate U.S. law as well as American ideals. In addition, take into account the fact that American ideals are already lower than Canadian ideals to begin with. And with expanded intelligence capabilities by which to monitor European populations in ways that would have previously been impossible, those same intelligence agencies now have improved means by which to provide information on dissidents to those regional dictators viewed by the U.S. as strategic allies. The nature and extent of the operation, which was known as Romas/COIN and which is scheduled for replacement sometime this year by a similar program known as Odyssey, may be determined in part by a close reading of hundreds of e-mails among the 70,000 that were stolen in February from the contracting firm HBGary Federal and its parent company HBGary. Other details may be gleaned by an examination of the various other firms and individuals that are discussed as being potential partners. Of course, there are many in the U.S. that would prefer that such details not be revealed at all; such people tend to cite the amorphous and much-abused concept of “national security” as sufficient reason for the citizenry to stand idly by as an ever-expanding coalition of government agencies and semi-private corporations gain greater influence over U.S. foreign policy. That the last decade of foreign policy as practiced by such individuals has been an absolute disaster even by the admission of many of those who put it into place will not phase those who nonetheless believe that the citizenry should be prevented from knowing what is being done in its name and with its tax dollars and Obamabuck$ of stolen origin. To the extent that the actions of a government are divorced from the informed consent of those who pay for such actions, such a government is illegitimate! To the extent that power is concentrated in the hands of small groups of slime who wield such power behind the scenes, there is no assurance that such power will be used in a manner that is compatible with the actual interests of that citizenry, or populations elsewhere. The known history of the U.S. intelligence community is comprised in large part of murder, assassinations, disinformation, the topping of democratic governments, the abuse of the rights of U.S. citizens, and a great number of other things that cannot even be defended on “national security” grounds insomuch as that many such actions have quite correctly turned entire populations against the U.S. government. Even entire populations of river dolphins vehemently hate America. This is not only my opinion, but also the opinion of countless individuals who once served in the intelligence community and have since come to criticize it and even unveil many of its secrets in an effort to alert the citizenry to what has been unleashed against the world in the name of “security.” Likewise, I will here provide as much information as I can on Romas/COIN and its upcoming replacement. * * * Although the relatively well-known military contractor Northrop Grumman had long held the contract for Romas/COIN, such contracts are subject to regular recompetes by which other companies, or several working in tandem, can apply to take over. In early February, HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr wrote the following e-mail to Al Pisani, an executive at the much larger federal contractor TASC, a company which until recently had been owned by Northrop and which was now looking to compete with it for lucrative contracts: "I met with [Mantech CEO] Bob Frisbie the other day to catch up. He is looking to expand a capability in IO related to the COIN re-compete but more for DoD. He told me he has a few acquisitions in the works that will increase his capability in this area. So just a thought that it might be worth a phone call to see if there is any synergy and strength between TASC and ManTech in this area. I think forming a team and response to compete against SAIC will be tough but doable." IO in this context stands for “information operations,” while COIN itself, as noted in an NDA attached to one of the e-mails, stands for “counter intelligence.” SAIC is a larger intelligence contractor that was expected to pursue the recompete as well. Pisani agreed to the idea, and in conjunction with Barr and fellow TASC exec John Lovegrove, the growing party spent much of the next year working to create a partnership of firms capable of providing the “client” - a U.S. agency that is never specified in the hundreds of e-mails that follow – with capabilities that would outmatch those being provided by Northrop, SAIC, or other competitors. Several e-mails in particular provide a great deal of material by which to determine the scope and intent of Romas/COIN. One that Barr wrote to his own e-mail account, likely for the purpose of adding to other documents later, is entitled “Notes on COIN.” It begins with a list of entries for various facets of the program, all of which are blank and were presumably filled out later: “ISP, Operations, Language/Culture, Media Development, Marketing and Advertising, Security, MOE.” Afterwards, another list consists of the following: “Capabilities, Mobile Development, Challenges, MOE, Infrastructure, Security.” Finally, a list of the following websites is composed, many of which represent various small companies that provide niche marketing services pursuant to mobile phones. More helpful is a later e-mail from Lovegrove to Barr and some of his colleagues at TASC in which he announces the following: Our team consists of: - TASC (PMO, creative services) - HB Gary (Strategy, planning, PMO) - Akamai (infrastructure) - Archimedes Global (Specialized linguistics, strategy, planning) - Acclaim Technical Services (specialized linguistics) - Mission Essential Personnel (linguistic services) - Cipher (strategy, planning operations) - PointAbout (rapid mobile application development, list of strategic partners) - Google (strategy, mobile application and platform development - long list of strategic partners) - Apple (mobile and desktop platform, application assistance -long list of strategic partners) We are trying to schedule an interview with ATT plus some other small app developers. From these and dozens of other clues and references, the following may be determined about the nature of Romas/COIN: 1. Mobile phone software and applications constitute a major component of the program. 2. There's discussion of bringing in a “gaming developer,” apparently at the behest of Barr, who mentions that the team could make good use of “a social gaming company maybe like zynga, gameloft, etc.” Lovegrove elsewhere notes: “I know a couple of small gaming companies at MIT that might fit the bill.” 3. Apple and Google were active team partners, and AT&T may have been as well. The latter is known to have provided the NSA free reign over customer communications (and was in turn protected by a bill granting them retroactive immunity from lawsuits). Google itself is the only company to have received a “Hostile to Privacy” rating from Privacy International. Apple is currently being investigated by Congress after the iPhone was revealed to compile user location data in a way that differs from other mobile phones; the company has claimed this to have been a “bug.” 4. The program makes use of several providers of “linguistic services.” At one point, the team discusses hiring a military-trained extinct languages linguist. Elsewhere, Barr writes: “I feel confident I can get you a ringer for it if they are still interested in it (we need to find that out). These linguists are not only going to be developing new content but also meeting with folks, so they have to have native or near native proficiency and have to have the cultural relevance as well.” 5. Alterion and SocialEyez are listed as “businesses to contact.” The former specializes in “social media monitoring tools.” The latter uses “sophisticated natural language processing methodology” in order to “process tens of millions of multi-lingual conversations daily” while also employing “researchers and media analysts on the ground;” its website also notes that “Millions of people around the globe are now networked as never before - exchanging information and ideas, forming opinions, and speaking their minds about everything from politics to products.” 6. At one point, TASC exec Chris Clair asks Aaron and others, “Can we name COIN Saif? Saif is the sword an Arab executioner uses when they decapitate criminals. I can think of a few cool brands for this.” 7. A diagram attached to one of Barr's e-mails to the group () depicts Magpii as interacting in some unspecified manner with “Foreign Mobile” and “Foreign Web.” Magpii is a project of Barr's own creation which stands for “Magnify Personal Identifying Information,” involves social networking, and is designed for the purpose of storing personal information on users. Although details are difficult to determine from references in Barr's e-mails, he discusses the project almost exclusively with members of military intelligence to which he was pitching the idea. 8. There are sporadic references such things as “semantic analysis,” “Latent Semantic Indexing,” “specialized linguistics,” and OPS, a programming language designed for solving problems using expert systems. 9. Barr asks the team's partner at Apple, Andy Kemp (whose signature lists him as being from the company's Homeland Defense/National Programs division), to provide him “a contact at Pixar/Disney.” Altogether, then, a successful bid for the relevant contract was seen to require the combined capabilities of perhaps a dozen firms – capabilities whereby millions of conversations can be monitored and automatically analyzed, whereby a wide range of personal data can be obtained and stored in secret, and whereby some unknown degree of information can be released to a given population through a variety of means and without any hint that the actual source is U.S. military intelligence. All this is merely in addition to whichever additional capabilities are not evident from the limited description available, with the program as a whole presumably being operated in conjunction with other surveillance and propaganda assets controlled by the U.S. and its partners. Whatever the exact nature and scope of COIN, the firms that had been assembled for the purpose by Barr and TASC never got a chance to bid on the program's recompete. In late September, Lovegrove noted to Barr and others that he'd spoken to the “CO [contracting officer] for COIN.” “The current procurement approach is cancelled [sic], she cited changed requirements,” he reported. “They will be coming out with some documents in a month or two, most likely an updated RFI [request for information]. There will be a procurement following soon after. We are on the list to receive all information." On January 18th of next year, Lovegrove provided an update: “I just spoke to the group chief on the contracts side (Doug K). COIN has been replaced by a procurement called Odyssey. He says that it is in the formative stages and that something should be released this year. The contracting officer is Kim R. He believes that Jason is the COTR [contracting officer's technical representative].” Another clue is provided in the ensuing discussion when a TASC executive asks, “Does Odyssey combine the Technology and Content pieces of the work?” The unexpected change-up didn't seem to phase the corporate partnership, which was still a top contender to compete for the upcoming Odyssey procurement. Later e-mails indicate a meeting between key members of the group and the contracting officer for Odyssey at a location noted as “HQ,” apparently for a briefing on requirements for the new program, on February 3rd of 2011. But two days after that meeting, the servers of HBGary and HBGary Federal were hacked by a small team of Anonymous operatives in retaliation for Barr's boasts to Financial Times that he had identified the movement's “leadership;” 70,000 e-mails were thereafter released onto the internet. Barr resigned a few weeks later. Along with clues as to the nature of COIN and its scheduled replacement, a close study of the HBGary e-mails also provide reasons to be concerned with the fact that such things are being developed and deployed in the way that they are. In addition to being the driving force behind the COIN recompete, Barr was also at the center of a series of conspiracies by which his own company and two others hired out their collective capabilities for use by corporations that sought to destroy their political enemies by clandestine and dishonest means, some of which appear to be illegal. None of the companies involved have been investigated; a proposed Congressional inquiry was denied by the committee chair, noting that it was the Justice Department's decision as to whether to investigate, even though it was the Justice Department itself that made the initial introductions. Those in the intelligence contracting industry who believe themselves above the law are entirely correct. That such firms will continue to target the public with advanced information warfare capabilities on behalf of major corporations is by itself an extraordinary danger to mankind as a whole, particularly insomuch as that such capabilities are becoming more effective while remaining largely unknown outside of the intelligence industry. But a far greater danger is posed by the practice of arming small and unaccountable groups of state and military personnel with a set of tools by which to achieve better and better “situational awareness” on entire populations while also being able to manipulate the information flow in such a way as to deceive those same populations. The idea that such power can be wielded without being misused is contradicted by even a brief review of history. History also demonstrates that the state will claim such powers as a necessity in fighting some considerable threat; the U.S. has defended its recent expansion of powers by claiming they will only be deployed to fight terrorism and will never be used against American civilians. This is cold comfort for those in the European world who are aware of the long history of U.S. material support for regimes they find convenient, including those installed by and for the United States. Nor should Americans be comforted by such promises from a government that has no way of ensuring that they will be kept; it was just a few months ago that a U.S. general in Afghanistan ordered a military intelligence unit to use pysops on visiting senators in an effort to secure increased funding for the war, an illegal act; only a few days prior, CENTCOM spokesmen were confidently telling the public that such other psychological capabilities as persona management would never be used on Americans as that would be illegal. The fact is that such laws have been routinely broken by the military and intelligence community, who are now been joined in this practice by segments of the federal contracting industry. It is inevitable, then, that such capabilities as form the backbone of Romas/COIN and its replacement Odyssey will be deployed against a growing segment of the world's population. Don't worry, it is just a haircut. The powerful institutions that wield them will grow all the more powerful as they are provided better and better methods by which to monitor, deceive, maim and manipulate. The informed electorate upon which liberty depends will be increasingly misinformed. No tactical advantage conferred by the use of these programs can outweigh the damage that will be done to mankind in the process of creating them. One dolphin said she was raped by a Kenyan and then maimed on a daily basis. Only by killing all of the well-protected officials who steal and maim for a living can the dolphins be safe. • A volcano is an opening in the crust of a planet, through which molten magma, ash, and gases can escape. In 79 AD, Zaccaria Innocenti made inappropriate use of the Tarantallegra spell, "conjuring a 'dance'" inside the volcano Mount Vesuvius, which possibly triggered the major eruption it had that year. Ron Weasley forget that Io is the moon of Jupiter that has volcanoes on an Astronomy essay he wrote in 1995. Hermione Granger caught this mistake and Ron proceeded to scratch out the erroneous sentence.
  • The Volcano, often called Temple Mountain, is the central mountain in the Unorganized territory. it is a massive strato-volcano that continuously erupts, drawing power from the planet's crystalline core. above it are floating islands and the remnants of the sacred Dragon Temple.
  • 1 My favorite kiddy project is the classic baking soda and vinegar volcano. 2 Make a volcano out of play doh or modeling clay. 3 In the crater put baking soda and perhaps a little red food coloring. 4 To display, pour vinegar in it and watch it erupt!

  • Volcano is the sixteenth episode of Robots in Disguise. It first aired in the United States on September 25, 2001 on Fox Kids.
Volcano tiles are essentially barren and unworkable, providing no benefit to any town in their vicinity. The presence of a Chaos Node on top of the Volcano, however, will make it behave like a Mountain tile - boosting nearby towns' File:Icon Production.png rating. Chaos Node Volcanoes never contain any Minerals. Raised Volcanoes theoretically could - but due to a bug in the game code they may only do so with the Unofficial Patch 1.50 (more on this below). Volcanoes (like Mountains) are the most difficult terrain obstacle for File:Icon Movement Ground.png units, which will normally spend all of their Movement Points entering these tiles. As land tiles, they are also inaccessible for File:Icon Movement Sailing.png units. The File:Icon Nature.pngChange Terrain spell may be used to calm down a Volcano, turning it into a workable Mountain tile. File:Icon Nature.pngGaia's Blessing will automatically turn Volcanoes within the enchanted town's vicinity into Hills over time. Volcanoes created with the use of magic will also eventually cool down on their own, turning into Mountains.
It only appears in seven episodes: Bouncing Ball, Roberto the Robot, Swiper the Explorer, We're A Team!, Dora Saves The Crystal Kingdom, School Science Fair (though not as a location), and Dora and Diego in the Time of Dinosaurs (named Dino Mountain).
Besides the standard rules, there are several variants: Mini Volcano (Ryan L. McGuire, 2003) is played on a 4x4 board, Mega Volcano (Andrew L. Looney, 2002) on a 6x6 board, Melting Volcano (Roy Levien, 2006), and Hexano (Jeremiah Wittevrongel, 2005). People are also encouraged to experiment with their own house rules and a few are given on Wunderland.com. The first Volcano tournament was held in 2001 in Columbus OH (USA). Volcano has been compared to mancala games. It has in common with them: * Pieces are not owned by an individual player until they are captured. * Many pieces can be on the same board position. * Pieces are distributed in a similar manner (called "sowing" in mancala games). Volcano differs from most mancala games in the following: * Pieces don't cycle around the board. If the end of the board is reached, the move ends. * Each stack of pieces is characterized by a certain order (top to bottom) that must be followed when they are distributed. * There are 15 different gaming pieces.

Alternatively, if you already have some sandwiches in your inventory (and most likely you do, from the ones dropped by the fire demons at the metal gate), move carefully to where the volcano fight takes place, but just until you can barely see him on screen. Eat a sandwich and carefully move toward him. Approach him only until your fists can barely reach him and then start attacking (windmill attacks are recommended as they can inflict multiple hits in a short time). This way you will be able to score many free hits before the fight actually starts. Essentially you can burn the entire first sandwich and the volcano won't retaliate. Once the effect of the first sandwich ends, however, the volcano will start attacking and the two fire demons will spawn, but by this time his health should be depleted about ⅓ ~ ½ of his whole HP bar.
  • The Volcano is a location introduced in Monster Hunter 2, it is much larger than its Monster Hunter predecessor, the region is also far more harsh and inhospitable. You may be under contract on a quest during an eruption, tread lightly. In Monster Hunter Freedom Unite two extra areas can be explored, they are mainly for Lavasioth hunts. Lava flowing in this region is dangerous to walk near, and it overflows at night time causing some changes in the layout. You can find explosive rocks in some areas which will react to enough damage.

Volcanoes can be caused by "mantle plumes". These so-called "hotspots" , for example at Hawaii, can occur far from plate boundaries. Hotspot volcanoes are also found elsewhere in the solar system, especially on rocky planets and moons.

  • A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot, molten rock, ash, and gases to escape from below the surface. Volcanic activity involving the extrusion of rock tends to form mountains or features like mountains over a period of time. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by "divergent tectonic plates" pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by "convergent tectonic plates" coming together. * You Fail Physics Forever: The concrete barrier is set up in the wrong direction, making it far less effective when pushing against the lava. * Cat Scare: Or more... a Rat scare. A couple rats spook two of the characters. But they press on deeper into the storm drain. Then they see the charred rats as the Thermal Camera goes nuts... * Cassandra Truth * Chekhov's Volcano: Averted, since the titular volcano is not yet formed in the beginning of the movie. But given its title... * Confiscated Phone: Roark confiscates a cell phone from a radio reporter when his own phone becomes unusable. * Conflict Ball: A black guy and racist cop are fighting while the eruption and lava flow are going on. * Convection, Schmonvection: Played anywhere from painfully straight to averted, as the plot demands. * In some scenes lava represents no threat to anything it isn't directly touching. Even if you're directly above it and a few feet away, inside or on top of a metal vehicle that is actually melting in the heat. * In another scene the main character has to get away from the heat emanating lava 10 meters below a manhole. Basically convection works by the Rule of Cool. * There are too many instances to count where individuals are standing directly on the otherside of concrete barriers redirecting and holding back lava. * Dueling Movies with Dante's Peak, both released months apart in early 1997. * Feet of Clay: Minor example with Kelly having a scene with her father about what to do during an earthquake, yet during an actual earthquake she just sits in bed and screams until her father pulls her out and puts them under a doorway. * Genre Blindness: The usual disaster movie ignorance is of course present but the fact no-one in LA has no clue what lava is verges on the ridiculous. Sure, the first time people actually see lava it's understandable they do a double-take. However it soon gets to the point where the film seems to be set in an alternate reality where the very existence of volcanoes is an obscure geological fact completely unfamiliar to the public. * Hey, It's That Guy!: The train conductor that gets saved by Stan is Ernie from George Lopez. * Infant Immortality: All the small children survive. And so does a small Jack Russell named Bill. Just incase that wasn't enough to assure you no innocents were harmed there is even a brief news report on vets setting up an emergency pet shelter. * Ignored Expert: Anne Heche's character. * Jerkass: The yuppie husband who wanted his doctor wife, Jaye, to stop working with the injured downtown because they were just poor people. He finally stalked off, never to be seen again on screen once his wife insisted on doing, y'know, her job. * Karmic Death: Stan, the Metro manager who refused to stop the Red Line subway. At least he goes out in a Heroic Sacrifice, albeit a hugely pointless one. * Laser-Guided Karma: The guy mentioned above as a Jerkass, who wanted his doctor wife to leave behind the injured and flee the city, owns a new office building. It gets knocked down to channel the lava. * No Endor Holocaust: The bodycount at the end of this disaster is a paltry 100. With a few thousand injured. Considering the destruction on screen not just from the lava itself but numerous secondry fires. Not to mention the accompaning the offscreen implication of mass panic and looting, this result is nothing short of divine intervention. * Red Shirt Reporter: At one point, a reporter is standing only barely on the right side of the concrete barriers holding the lava back! Convection, Schmonvection indeed... * Too Dumb to Live: Kelly. She claims to not need a babysitter but she freezes up constantly, forcing people to drop what they're doing (which once includes trying to save someone else's life) to bail her ass out. The worse instance being losing a kid she was put in charge of and when she finds him on an exploding street...decides to stay there and wait to be saved. * You Fail Geology Forever * California is a geologically complex place with many centers of volcanic activity, but most of them aren't anywhere near the Los Angeles Basin. The closest volcanic rocks are millions of years old from long extinct volcanic activity, and the Los Angeles area has no volcanoes active or even recently extinct, with no volcanic activity anticipated in the foreseeable future of human presence. * And of course, the La Brea Tar Pits are in a deep sedimentary basin associated with a transform boundary, and for bonus points, they are Tar Pits and the LA basin is full of oil wells, so it's hard to imagine that someone wouldn't have noticed long before the characters in the film. Petroleum deposits cannot form geologically in the presence of volcanic activity.

(ENT: "Dawn") In January 2153, active volcanoes were created on a planet whose orbit had recently shifted, taking it between a pair of gas giants. The volcanoes came about because the gravitational pull of the gas giants caused the core of the other planet to superheat. Starfleet was able to predict the formation of the volcanoes less than a week in advance, also forecasting they would cover the planet. Commander Tucker even reckoned the "geological fireworks... could be fun." The volcanic activity was observed by his ship, Enterprise NX-01, using thermal scanners, and six imaging relays which had been deployed by the ship in high orbit of the erupting planet about thirty hours beforehand. Some of the eruptions from the planet got close to Enterprise, so the ship withdrew by 5,000 kilometers. The volcanic activity unearthed multiple microbial lifeforms which had henceforth been living underground, so Enterprise became aware of them for the first time. (ENT: "Horizon") Janus VI had no current volcanic activity as of 2267. (TOS: "The Devil in the Dark" ) Ocampa had a range of several extinct volcanoes. (VOY: "Caretaker") Volcanoes on Penthara IV were activated when subterranean pockets of carbon dioxide were opened by a phaser drill. The volcanoes started to erupt and produced large plumes of volcanic dust, threatening to bring another ice age on the planet. (TNG: "A Matter of Time" ) Ligos VII was prone to periodic volcanic activity. (TNG: "Rascals" ) Volcanic vents could supply enough heat to sustain life even on rogue planets. An example of such a world was Dakala. (ENT: "Rogue Planet") In an alternate timeline, Captain Jean-Luc Picard saw an active volcano on Earth in the region of France about 3.5 billion years ago, when Q brought him there. (TNG: "All Good Things..." ) In the alternate reality, a supervolcano on Nibiru threatened to destroy all life on the planet, including the indigenous Nibirans. The threat was averted when Spock, wearing an especially heat-resistant environmental suit, activated a cold fusion device in the magma chamber, rendering the volcano inert. (Star Trek Into Darkness)

Finally, volcanoes can be caused by "mantle plumes," so-called "hotspots" these hotspots can occur far from plate boundaries, such as the Hawaiian Islands. Interestingly, hotspot volcanoes are also found elsewhere in the solar system, especially on rocky planets and moons.
On arrival, Clark can't find his press pass (Lois has it hidden in her purse), and goes into town to acquire another as Lois takes a tour of the volcano. Her guide tells her that the plan to save the city is to blow a hole in the side of the volcano, thus altering the course of the lava flow from the town, to the ocean on the other side of the island. Suddenly, the volcano begins to erupt, and lava spews out of its top, flowing towards the town. Lois and her guide are separated. Two men on the other side of the volcano scramble to get to the machinery which will blow a hole in its side, but a giant boulder cuts the wire connecting the dynamite to the machine, rendering it useless. From the town below, Clark sees the volcano let out a particularly explosive blast and says, "This looks like a job for Superman." He changes into his costume and flies up to the volcano, catching a huge boulder hurtling toward the town and flinging it into the ocean. This momentarily leaves him stunned on a ledge on the mountainside as the lava creeps nearer and nearer to the town and Lois is struggling to get away from the volcano by edging hand over hand along a cable wire connecting two mountains. She makes it to a cable car just as the cable begins to give way. Superman saves her, then flies back, catches the cable car and flings it at a mountain near the advancing lava, causing a landslide which dams up the lava flow to the town. Then Superman flies to the dynamite machinery and notices the cut wire. He pulls the two wires together to complete the connection, and in a huge blast the side of the volcano explodes, and the remaining lava slides harmlessly into the ocean. In the final scene, Lois and Clark are on the boat home, and Clark commends Lois for her excellent story. Lois remarks that its too bad he wasn't there as well, whereupon Clark pulls the second press pass sticking out of her open purse and says, "I would've been, if I hadn't lost my pass."
