Questa creatura, rappresentata come una varietà di serpente gigante, appare spesso in qualità di boss o nemico di alto livello. La sua apparizione più nota è avvenuta in Final Fantasy VII, in cui era un potente boss opzionale, ma non è mai stato riproposto con queste medesime caratteristiche fino a diversi capitoli più avanti. In alcuni titoli, è classificato invece come una varietà più potente di basilisco, in altri Midgardsormr e Yormungand sono due nemici distinti.
